Why Starlink Is Crucial To SpaceX’s Success

SpaceX’s broadband satellite internet, Starlink, is still in beta, but already has over 10,000 customers. The fledgling service is expected to be a cash cow for SpaceX, bringing in as much as $30 billion a year - more than 10 times the annual revenue of its existing rocket business. This revenue will be used to fuel Elon Musk’s ultimate goal of building a colony on Mars. Eventually, Starlink may even keep us connected on the Red Planet.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX rolled out its Starlink early access program to the public six months ago, with the satellite internet service growing to more than 10,000 users in the first few months.

To get real-life first impressions of the service, CNBC spoke to more than 50 people who have been using Starlink. Those surveyed included households in Canada and 13 U.S. states: California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The majority of these Starlink users are in rural or remote areas, such as farmland or wilderness, with limited access to terrestrial broadband options - and a few with no access altogether.

“I expect to keep the service long term,” a user in Montana told CNBC. “The price of the beta for the service is more reasonable than any other option we have, and those are worse in performance. I will keep Starlink as long as its the only broadband option available to me.”

Starlink is the company’s capital-intensive project to build an interconnected internet network with thousands of satellites, known in the space industry as a constellation, designed to deliver high-speed internet to consumers anywhere on the planet.

SpaceX launched the “Better than Nothing Beta” program for the public in October, and the majority of users CNBC surveyed received invitations to join between November and February. The service is priced at $99 a month in the U.S. under the beta, with a $499 upfront cost for the equipment customers need to connect to the satellites - plus taxes, shipping, and any accessories needed to mount the antenna.

CNBC’s surveyed users on total cost, the installation process, what they thought of SpaceX’s equipment, internet speed, reliability of the service, what their service alternatives were, their experience with customer service, any concerns they had, and their overall impressions.

When other countries are subsidising satellite internet, here in India, the authority is planning to auction the utility to milk money out of it. A typical consumer mentality, which never values innovation. India is not a country for science and technology 🙄

The problem is that SPACE X keeps putting these satellites in low earth orbit which only creates more space junk problems because that is what STARLINK is, space junk. Now they are talking about launching 12,000 STARLINK satellites at one time. If they insist on launching these 12,000 satellites maybe they should follow Googles advice and put them in medium earth orbit not low earth orbit where they will be less of a problem for private space launches, Astronomy and large and small telescopes alike. As to the STARLINK already in orbit, they should be scraped and deorbited or boosted into a higher medium earth orbit.
Miguel lopez
Miguel lopez Mês atrás
Being low orbit give its advantages over medium orbit, they plan 42,000 satellites that de orbit at the end of their useful life, it's not junk it's literally the most advanced man made communications system and will get rid of many wifi towers and fiber lines in rural areas. even the military is jumping on board with stalink due to how much better it is than medium orbit satellites.

I got a problem. I don’t get why it’s so important to colonize Mars. Sorry. The way I see it, Mars is the nearest planet we can put people on. If you could put 50 people on Mars, what’s the payback. How the hell do you make money? If Mars is taking now 25 years, and who knows by the time we get it colonized, say 50 years, then what? It took 50 to get set up on Mars, can you imagine how long it will take to get to our next planet? 100-150 years? Then what? Even though it will take twice as long and cost 5 times the money, I think all this interplanetary stuff should be done for pride, and the creation of innovation, BY GOVERNMENTS!

Miguel lopez
Miguel lopez Mês atrás
@unknown entity it's cheap compared to a $2000 tower with a $200 monthly bill for 1/40 the advertised speed, and 1/200 actually speed vs starlink, stalink has no real competition.
unknown entity
unknown entity Mês atrás
@Miguel lopez you think $100 is cheap for a person working for $1 a day? Well, We gotta agree it will get cheaper over time as competition arises(origin, labs, one web). Consumer's gonna benefit in the long run. :)
Miguel lopez
Miguel lopez Mês atrás
@unknown entity when the sytem is faster and more reliable than the previous sytem that was used then yes it is more reliable. The area covered by starlink right now is larger than any network in the world, it's just 9nly 1000/42000 required satelites have been activated. $100 is still cheap compared to other options rural people have and poor communities in Africa.
unknown entity
unknown entity Mês atrás
@Miguel lopez using a system at a specified location during disaster relief doesn't make it reliable. By reliability I meant, the range/area covered by starlink right now. Till it covers most of its operational space, the system would be too unreliable for orgs that's y the military has only "future" plans of deploying starlink. As you mentioned one of the biggest reason is cost, starlink is waste of buck for most of the peeps living in rural areas of continents like Asia/Africa as it almost what they earn in a month and they make of almost 90% of the people starlink claims can benefit from its service.
Miguel lopez
Miguel lopez Mês atrás
@unknown entity I'm using starlink right now, after some adjustment to the dish position I get 2.5x the speed of my wired internet providers in my city, I average 230mgbs, I don't get as much drops as I use to 3 months ago, they have 500,000 pre orders already, my state did use their system last year as emergency communications for fire control and the military wants a portable version that can be battery powered as well as testing it in a aircraft, Why? Because it's already faster than any other satellite communication system in the world, and will soon be the most reliable. As for now the only people who will pay the high price of it ($100 a month is 2x what I pay for wired internet here) are residents who want rural or fast communication in their area without having to pay to install a tower or fiber line.

The reason it's so important is so they can get several million monthly subscribers. Having a Golden goose walk into your bank account twice a month is a pretty big financial strategy. If they want to succeed with this they better make it mobile as well as stationary. There are about 10 million RV customers that would love to have something like this. How are the RVers doing it right now? Wi-Fi at RV parks and cell phones, specifically cellular data plans. There is an untapped resource of mobile users Elon doesn't even think about right now. Between truckers, RVer, business people right now they're all having to use Wi-Fi or cell data plans to get their digital communications and transmissions.

You can't do anything with it so we use our phones for everything. What is annoying and frustrating is justvone street up, there is vyve internet with 100mbs speeds. The company isn't going to run a few hundred feet of cable for our block and the next block, so you know what, they won't get our money, Starlink will.

The manuscripts describe the planets, who lives there, how tall and so on, I wrote only very little. 16 Worlds make up one system - one world, 12 systems make up ACRODYTON ,,,, 12 ACRODYTONS make up Infinity, there is no beginning and end.I will sell these manuscripts, they also have a cure for earthly diseases and invisible and sent diseases. Тhe planet "SELIKIR "B" - people of brown color, brown plants emitting special voices, there is no warrior, people live 2500 earth years, there are diseases and divine doctors with divine power. Etc. ..ALEKO is the ruler of the solar system, he sends ships and aircraft with people to the earth, to observe our earth, since there is disorder on the earth and there is no truth, an aircraft with 5 people will soon appear. CAPRICORN-1006 - the formation of human souls .. Planet ZIRIY is a high planet where there are no diseases, no doctors, where the immortal world of the outside world, where there is an impulse of healing healing of divine forces - spiritual, to preserve the life of an earthly person. The planet SOKON - a high mind, 200 trillion kilometers from the earth, holy heavenly forces - from there comes a healing stream. Planet Mercury - eternal flame ,,, Hell - Tartarus under the Himalayan mountains at a depth of 14 kilometers, the underworld of the earth under Mount Everest ,. Under the mountains ANTY is an underground kingdom. The spirit of evil comes out of the lungs, kidneys, head, stomach, liver, duodenum, sedal nerve, gallbladder, blood, veins, lymph gaps. , from the mediastinum, from the endocrine glands, from the salivary glands, from the ears, from the eyes, from the nose, from the spine, from the muscles, from the joints 150 canals, from cells 524 billion, from hair 10 billion and 570 million brain cells from the coccyx, from the nails of all organs of internal secretion and the external body. May it be so . Yes, in this manuscript, in addition to space and the description of planets, worlds, there is treatment, the grandfather treated people with this spiritual weapon and the words written in the manuscript.
