@Shifsabre They are characters in their own right, they just aren't the main characters. The fact that what they are doing is actually the setting rather than the story doesn't change that. The thing that distinguishes the two is that they don't have any obstacles. Everything that they want to do, they do. Everything they need to happen, will happen. Whenever something is about to go wrong for them (Candice is about to expose them to their mum), their creation will suddenly disappear and it will be perfectly fine. This happens everytime, except for that one time when they are sent away, but even that was shown to be a dream and was basically an episode showing us what *could* happen if they ever got caught. So whilst they do have some slight developments and they do interact with others, they can't really be classed as main characters. They don't get impacted by the main conflicts of the stories, either the A story or B story. The only way the conflict affects them is Doof's inventions destroying or removing their creations, but that doesn't really bother them as they will create something new tomorrow. Also, it usually ends up as a good thing for them as it prevents them from being "busted" by Candice.
Shifsabre 19 dias atrás
I would have to argue that the boys are characters in their own right that have their own developments based on how they use their machines and interact with their friends. The conflict might not involve their chosen project for the day, but the project does provide a basis for their interactions

@bedlam01 some people who are fans of shows or movies tend to love a physical copy. Typically physical copies come with extra bonus material (deleted scenes or behind the scenes) that they usually don’t release straight to the internet (without having to dig for it) or it’s not on streaming services. Also there’s always that possibility that the streaming service gets shut down then how are people to watch the things the love? (The physical copy)

This is what is called "Flat Character Arc". In a normal story, the world around the character changes them, making them going through a new knowledge or personality. Meanwhile, the flat character does the opposite: They are the one who change the world based on their believes. The characters around the flat protagonist are the ones who change.

I feel like this also applies to Captain America in the MCU. While he does learn and does change in superficial terms (like who he’s allied with), his morals and ideals mostly stay intact at their core. One of his main draws is how he’s almost the exact same person he was from the start of his first solo movie to the end of his third “solo” movie.
Henrique Erzinger
Henrique Erzinger 14 dias atrás
@Owen Vogelgesang Marty does have a character arc, the whole chicken thing. It is developed throughout the 3 movies. Pooh is the text book flat character usually used as an example. I wouldn't really call Phineas and Ferb flat protagonists, I agree with the author that they're more of a framing device.

It's actually kinda Looney Tunes-esque in a way. The show isn't about seeing the main characters win, as they will never put in any effort and everything always magically works out for them anyway. It's more about the seeing the antagonists stumble and lose, because they are the ones actually trying to overcome an obstacle, even if the universe always conspires against them.

Welp, if Ferris Bueler's Day Off worked, why Phineas and Ferb wouldn't? Both are stories where the "main characters" (Ferris Bueler and Phineas and Ferb) don't get a character arc and makes the real main characters (Cameron, Candace and Dr. Doof) have their own character growth by doing what they do. Funny enough, I love both of them.
Alex Schmidt
Alex Schmidt Mês atrás
But doesn't Cameron spend most of his time going along with Ferris? Even if it's a separate arc I'd still call it part of the main story. The bits with the principal and the sister are separate stories though.
LittleZbot Mês atrás
Disagree on that whole "real main character" thing. Someone doesn't have to change themselves to be the main character. Look at Goku, Luffy, Superman, SpongeBob in most episodes, WALL-E, and many others. It's called a "flat character arc," a storytelling tool where a character changes others instead of himself, but it makes them no less viable as a main character, nor any less well-written. On the contrary,, it's far more difficult to do a good flat character arc than a regular positive character arc. Ferris Bueller is undoubtedly the main character of his movie. He just has a flat character arc.
belen Mês atrás
God bless God bless
Well Phineas and Ferb is an episodic cartoon while Ferris Beuler's Day Off is a comedy movie and while it focuses on Ferris and his antics, it's really about Cameron learning to stand up for himself while Ferris already learned his lesson in the past. Everything works out for him because it pisses off the principal and Jeanie

No cause this is actually genius, cartoons with young male leads get more attention and funding from sponsors, while cartoons with animal leads, female leads, and older male leads get less attention/funding. By titling the show so that CEOs assume two young boys are the main characters, this allowed the writers to use the entire rest of the cast to tell quirky and interesting stories from viewpoints that tend to get brushed aside in shows while still getting the associated funding.
Stormfather 12 horas atrás
@BoulderBro999 why? A thousand times this
BoulderBro999 why?
This is by far the worst take I’ve heard. The inclusion of a female quasi protagonist doesn’t elevate the actual art. The art is elevated by it’s unusual system of story telling. The whole point that Dan was making (at least I’m my mind) is that Phineas and Ferb follows extremely unusual rules for a children’s cartoon. It was a hit because it was completely unique at the time, and very much still is. Children don’t care about social justice, or identifying with girls and boys, they care about well made entertainment. A story about a girl isn’t much different than a story about a boy, but a story that’s written with a totally different formula than the standard hero’s journey is shocking, new, and stimulating to a child’s mind. Watching multiple plotlines with unconventional characters that don’t fit well known and established roles intersect is really really fun. It’s not too dissimilar to the story featured in playtime by Jacque Tati. It’s sort of just things happening, and you watch it.

Yeah, it sometimes had an effect on the plot (usually affecting Doof in some way, unless I am misremembering) before it was destroyed or disappeared for some reason (usually Doof's invention). It is a genius way to make a show though. Having the titular characters seem like the main characters and give them enough focus that children watching can enjoy it, whilst also using them to just set the stage for the real main characters (Candice and Doof). Like you said, their creations didn't really have much of an affect on their surroundings. They were just created, existed for a bit, then disappeared or were destroyed. We never saw Phineas and Ferb's lives outside of their creations, they only existed to start the plot of the episode and be a setting for the actual stories. Candice, and even Doof to some extent, were shown to have lives outside of just busting the boys or making inventions. Meanwhile, the only time the boys were interacting with people outside of their friend group was when they were doing something to allow them to finish their creations (e.g. finding a part/material they need).

As a kid I didn’t realize this, I was so amazed by what they were building that I wanted to keep seeing it, but what really kept me interested is the story of Candace or of Perry. My level of respect for you guys as writers has just dramatically shot up, I knew the show was great before but learning that you guys put that much thought into making the format of the show so unique just brings it the whole thing to an S-Tier for me. That is such an impressively creative and unique way to handle a story's structure which is incredibly fitting considering the fact that the whole show is built around the idea of creating the most unique stuff just for the sake of doing it. And what really gets me is the sheer level of understanding you guys had to hold when it comes to the storytelling process just to think up something that creative. It's so impressive that I'm running adjectives to use which properly quantify the level of genius this really is, you guys are actual masters of your craft, I seriously respect that

It also inspired me, as time went on, to take chances and build friendships, even when people try to tear you down. Even more so than to still be kind to the people who are cautious of you (Candice). This show was truly anamazing project that deserves all its recognition and joy it brought so many kids and adults back then as they do now.

I remember watching phineas and ferb for the first time. I was like 9 and my older brother who I am very close with was 11 (2 years older than me). The show just came out of nowhere for us. We didn't really saw any trailers or anything. We just got home from school one day and watch tv like we used to. We usually watch either nickelodeon, cartoon network or disney. We suddenly see that a show that we didn't know was playing on disney and we decided to checked it out. At first we didn't like the fact that some new random show is intruding on our tv time (after school) but after watching one episode (the roller coaster one), we got hooked. We liked it so much that we made a promise to continue watching this together after school. And we just continued watching it together. Watching the old phineas and ferb episodes makes me feel nostalgic and sad because my brother and I rarely spend time with each other like we used to, since we both have our own lives now. As much as I hated going to school (secondary school) during my teenage years (13-17). I'd choose to experience it again if I can rewind time back when I was 9, just to spend time with my brother.

No way.. your giving the main characters the job of making the setting, while all the side characters are the ones with the stories. What a revolution. Basically giving the mains the power to create where and what the story is about is such a unique concept. No wonder people thought it would flop, but in the end, it works because there's not just one main plot, there are many side plots making up the "story." Imma keep this in mind if I ever make characters. Thanks for this POV, we woulda never guessed it if it weren't for this explanation. Cheers!

"The essence of story telling is that the characters are changed by what is happening to them. " Don't really think that's true. Hell some of the most enduring stories no one in them is changed at all. Stories were just a method of passing on or reinforcing information. Be it a history, a belief, a moral or whatever else. While this still holds true for some modern forms it has taken a back seat to entertainment. Even then you don't need anyone in the story to really change in order for it to be entertaining. Many horror films the characters just exist as a tool for the violence never changing or developing.

Gonna be honest, I'd love to see a special season of the show that is just the doof&Perry parts, those are the parts I'm nostalgic for

“We’re cocky and we like to prove people wrong”. I love that. Thank you for my childhood sir.

Watching them as a kid, I always just thought Candice would of had a lot better chance to tell on them, if she just took the pic/video and leave them alone, it would of worked out better to have proof. Like the butterfly effect, the more she tries to hurry and prove something, the less likely anyone believes, because she set off the chain of events that quickly disrupts/ends it. The parents will be blindsided one day when they actually come up with something and it doesn't somehow disappear. To them, the two showed zero signs that they were that smart/genius.

The laugh as he said "They thought it would be a total failure." is pure bliss.

I like Phineas and Ferb because it proved something people don't seem to always understand... there is no one way to write a series... Don't expect every single story or series to be the same as other stories or series...

That's half the reason I like the show growing up, it was one of the only shows on TV where the main characters never learned anything, the whole story wasn't geared for them to learn some life lesson. It was just good old fashioned fun.

This is why the show is so good. It's unexpected to have what you think of as the B story actually be the main one.

I honestly think P&F was so innovative for its time in terms of story telling. The series finale sums it up perfectly: you have two characters who, in a way, foil each other with different tones of the exact same behaviour who kind of just give in to Einstein’s law of insanity. But by the end, they learn and grow from their mistakes and are both better people because of it. We watch them grow and improve throughout the series and, in a way, I think that’s why people kept coming back

I would argue that great story telling comes from the B story. B story is where the big questions get asked and discovered and tethers the show together across episodes or seasons. The A story where anyone can join in that does or doesn't know much about the show and feel comfortable watching. So, the B story can be complex and leave you hooked and is more interesting than the A story.

I always thought of P&F's story is the C story where they interact with the other stories but never interact TOO MUCH while Candace is the B story since she only interacts with the C story (rare A story interaction) and Dr. D&Perry and more the A story and interact with the C story but interact more with the C story than the C story interacts with it

My favorite stories in the series were the growth and development of Buford and Baljeet.

I actually saw an in depth video about this. It's of course much better hearing the stuff he said being told by the creator but he too mentioned how everyone told you "no this won't work" and how there was no tention
