So many of them are not one hit wonders at all, they've been internationally big with many top hits in many countries and a notable career. Just because some European band isn't back to top 10 in America does not mean they are just a one hit wonder. He has got the terminology all mixed up, so it was a failed list.

A song I always seem to relate to the 80’s is Driver’s Seat by Sniff ‘n The Tears. It did come out in 1978, but the tones and rhythms seem to be 80-ish.

There are a number of songs on this list that were possibly one hit wonders in the US, but in other counties there were follow up hits. A-ha had several hits in many countries. A great list with memories for all the songs. One you missed was "99 Red Balloons", both German and English versions

I was really expecting "Enola Gay" by OMD to be in here, but maybe they had a few too many hits? Also, where's Swing Out Sister? It seemed like you couldn't go anywhere in Montreal in 1987 without hearing "Break Out." Good list, all the same. It certainly brings back memories.

I'm happy I recognized everything. I've got a few to add but I'm not sure if these were one hit wonders or no hit wonders I just like 😆. Some I might add are: Voice of the Beehive ~ The Beat of Love, The Kings ~ This beat goes on / switchin to glide , The Soupdragons ~ I'm Free, that got released on 1-1-1990 so I guess that doesn't count, but definitely a killer album, Jon Butcher Axis ~ Don't Say Goodnight, The Hoodoo Gurus ~ I Want You Back , Jon Astley ~ Jane's Getting Serious. I'm going sifting through the comments for the next 3 hours or so 😁. Cameo ~ Word Up!

@crispyryce If it's his opinion then does it need to be factually correct or parameters of his selections clearly defined to define a one hit wonder? I guess that's why so many comments here are pointing out with some information of their own that some of Rick's selections were not one hit wonders. A simple change of title by Rick to say "One hit wonders in the USA in the 1980's" would have sufficed.
crispyryce 2 meses atrás
@Ralph Sam If you do that, there's hardly any such thing as a one hit wonder. He only needs to go by his perspective since it's just an opinion of his in the first place.

"In a Big Country", by Big Country. Quintessentially '80s, but it doesn't sound the least bit dated and is a really great song. OK Madness was not a one-hit-wonder. They were and still are an English Ska music staple. One Step Beyond, Night Boat to Cairo, It Must Be Love, Baggy Trousers, House of Fun, etc. were just a few of their hits. They had 17 top-ten hits and 31 top-40 in the UK. However, on the Billboard Top 100 in the US they got two: Our House and It Must be Love.

Madness's most successful period was from 1980 to 1986, when the band's songs spent a total of 214 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. (UB40 shared the same number of weeks, the largest for any British group in the decade, but over a longer period.) Madness have had 15 singles reach the UK top ten, including "One Step Beyond", "Baggy Trousers" and "It Must Be Love", one UK number-one single "House of Fun" and two number ones in Ireland, "House of Fun" and "Wings of a Dove"

DEVO was not a one hit wonder band. Girl U Want, Satisfaction, Through Being Cool, Jerkin' Back 'N' Forth, Freedom of Choice, and Working in a Coal Mine. I could keep going.

I wouldn't describe Madness as One Hit Wonders Rick! Here in the UK they were massive in the 80s - one hit after another

I think One Hit Wonder can refer to one hit album even if that album produced more than one hit song. And the term would not apply if said band achieved hits on successive albums.

I read something interesting about John Waite…he had a hit with “The Babys”, as a solo artist and as the singer of Bad English. Pretty versatile guy.
Locutus 8 dias atrás
Yes, I am surprised he was on this list. The Baby's had a lot of songs on rock radio back in late 70's early 80's. I saw him live a few years ago, he is late 60's and still sounds great.

I swear The Outfield would be on that list. Often overlooked but they were such a huge part of the 80's. I have always thought Til Tuesday deserved way more than they ever received. Amy's vocal on Voices Carry is other worldly amazing. Hell, her guest vocal on RUSH's Time Stand Still is incredible! Great list Rick. Asia, Scandal, and Quarterflash are tunes that, immediately take me back to the best decade of music ever. All the best sir!

There it is! I watch YT on my smart TV and grabbed my phone to mention The Outfield. _Your Love_ is one of those songs that everyone knows. Young kids and teens may not know exactly which movie/show/commercial/theme park/restaurant/sporting event etc. they first heard it, but it would be difficult to find someone who doesn't know that song

Genius of Love from the Tom Tom Club, led by former Talking Heads bandmates (and real life wife and husband Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz). I think it's an iconic one-hit wonder song. It's so iconic even Mariah Carey sampled it.

I just wanted to tell you Rick, how much my friend and I love your stuff. When I get into a depressed state, and have trouble wanting to play and write, all I have to do is put one of your videos on. It doesn't matter if it's an interview, 20 top what ever, or my favorite "What makes this song great". All I have to do is listen to your vast array of subjects, realizing what a great musician you are, and all of a sudden, I feel like being creative. You remind me what it is about music, and, creating that I love. Don't ever stop. You affect people a thousand different ways.

You inspired me to go back to my 80's library and I did find a semi-one hit wonder "At This Moment" by Billy Vera & the Beaters ... such a wonderful song and wonderful saxophone play for a truly memorable song from 1981 :)

The Vapors "Turning Japanese" is so 80s, so loud and so one-hit wonder. And I might also add to the mix When in Rome's "The Promise", the awkward song ending a very awkward but beautifully funny movie Napoleon Dynamite.

Donnie Iris was in Wild Cherry. He still performs at the age of 79. I saw him in this past summer in Akron. He can still wail to Ah Leah it was a fantastic fun concert. I highly recommend anyone to see him.

@0329Christine I never heard that song here in the PNW. I only know is exists because of research after the fact. I think it charted but a huge concentration of its radio exposure and sales was in the Northern Midwest area and Pennsylvania. But, technically, you are right. Rick listed some others that weren’t the only charting hits of the artist, however.

@MGsteveR I still listen to shooting rubberbands quite often. Edie was from my neighborhood in Dallas, her stepmom signed the paychecks in the payroll office at my first job when i was a teenager. Good times! She gave it all up to marry Paul Simon. The New Bohemians story is actually kind of tragic, but they are back together now and have had several recent albums. DEEP ELLUM REPRAZENT!!!!

I think Pee Wee Herman's "I Know What You Are But What Am I" is a much better song than Edie Brickell's "What I am". It has a catchier hook, a very distinctive intro, a bridge with modulation, and unexpectedly original choruses ("choruses" or "chori" ?) It really hit The Big Top.
