This week’s film breakdown analyzes University of Michigan's NFL draft prospect defensive end, Aidan Hutchinson. Hutchinson is the projected number one overall draft pick and he has the production and athletic scores to back it up. But, there are rarely ever perfect prospects and Hutchinson is far from perfect, specifically in one area. What is that area and is he capable of overcoming his problems at the next level? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze University of Michigan’s defensive end Aidan Hutchinson as he enters the 2022 NFL Draft.

It's like Nick Bosa. He struggled against bigger linemen so the 9ers gave him the biggest and baddest lineman in the game to line up to at every practice

@Charlie Bridgewater You can’t say this to lions fans. He is a white DE from the Big10. They can’t be getting a type like Iowa’s Jared DeVries from 25 years ago. They assume he will be the next in a line of great DEs. It’s so clear this kid is big and slow. Watch the game film of him from Washington. It takes him 5 seconds to finish sacks. Not seeing the allure.

@Lucas Ferreira as a Giants fan I’m happy we got Thibs We need that “get the fuck out of my way.” and “everything runs through me.” mentality And getting Evan Neal is a good balance because he’s very quiet and to compliment that he seems like a quiet killer who will have a crazy work ethic and dominate anyone
Lucas Ferreira
Lucas Ferreira 8 meses atrás
I'm more impressed with Thibs on the field than with Hutchinson, but Hutchinson is my number one because of what he can do to any team's culture since day 1. You draft him and your defense(and team overall) instantly gets a leader and a role model with insane work ethic, so he's basically another Watt brother. Jaguars could get Thibs because he's a more talented edge rusher, but the Jaguars NEED someone like Aidan Hutchinson to turn this team around.

Good Video Alex!! I think that with Hutchinson, his arms are almost an inch shorter than Nick Bosa, and he is gonna need a good coach in order to teach him how to adapt to his arm length when going against behemoth tackles which are becoming more common now.

I think it does help that he practiced against the best offensive line in the country in college and he went to the lions instead of the jags who have a significantly worse oline than the jags

@AlexRollinsNFL i do agree especially on the mental side, as you mentioned, Hutchinson is extremely smart and applies it throughout his games.
AlexRollinsNFL

He reminds me a lot of Nick to be honest. There were questions about Nick's athleticism coming out of OSU, and while Hutch has the combine numbers, his athleticism doesn't necessarily JUMP off the tape. Nick's pass rushing repertoire was more polished coming out, however Hutch is more of an all around polished prospect imo
jmg999
jmg999 8 meses atrás
This was another really great analysis. I appreciate that you mentioned his dropstep, b/c I'd seen that on gametape, too, but I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere else. Another recent high draft pick he reminds of is Chase Young, although for different reasons. Young was incredibly athletic and relied on that athleticism in order to beat most defenders. His technique wasn't nearly as strong as it could have been, and some of this has shown up in the League. In the case of Hutchinson, while he is unable to rely on that level of athleticism, he's honed a couple of techniques to his advantage, and by doing so, I believe that he found what worked for him the majority of the time. The problem was, against elite offensive lineman, especially the type he'll find at the next level, he a couple moves only go so far. I feel that he'll have to broaden his repertoire of pass rushing maneuvers in order to remain competitive at the next level.
jmg999
jmg999 8 meses atrás
@AlexRollinsNFL I didn't communicate my point very well. I don't think that Hutchinson is similar to Young on a player-to-player basis. What I meant to say was, I think that they're similar in that they both rely on a few very specific techniques to make their games work.
AlexRollinsNFL
AlexRollinsNFL 8 meses atrás
Thanks JMG, yeah that showed up way too often. I'm not doubting Michigan's staff, but I wonder if it was some odd sort of technique they were trying to teach? He's similar to Young in terms of repertoire of moves, but I'm not sure I'd comp him much more than that.

If his work ethic is as strong as his game, he will be a good pick. All the concerns you mentioned are coachable. Hope the Jaguars are smart enough to put him in a position to succeed.

There are some defensive players who are just so athletic, quick, and strong, they just dominate regardless of their flaws. They make so many good plays versus bad plays. 'Scouts' say Joey Bosa is more talented and more athletic than his brother. Probably true. I would argue that Nick is a better and more effective player.

One thing about the combine, it doesn't measures a person's motor/ mentality. Teams get enamored with players that test great in the 40-yard dash but does it match their production. There are 4 or 5 Defensive ends that test better than Hutchinson but if he is close to Nick Bosa#97 niners I would pick him over the others.

Do ppl also realize this was his first year playing in a stand up outside backer role? Yeah maybe his lack of length prevents him from being an absolute super star, but I still think he can work his way into pro bowl level good

He resembles JaDaveon Clowney in the sense that his skillset is so limited that in a defensive context that doesn't set him up to win he won't be an effective speed rusher. I would make the personnel argument as a coach to have him play more and transition to a stand up 3-4 edge because he plays the run so well as well as having the football understanding of the game he has.

Halil's Real Footballtalk
@AlexRollinsNFL I'll actually do my final eval on him in a couple of days. So hopefully I can settle on my position for him on the big board, but tbh. I think KT has more physical potential, because of better length and burst upfield, along with not featuring that ugly back-kick in his get-off.
AlexRollinsNFL
AlexRollinsNFL 8 meses atrás
@Halil's Real Footballtalk @Halil's Real Footballtalk The long arm when he showed it was solid, but he didn't use it too often. It's weird I feel like has that pop at times, and other times it's just not there
Halil's Real Footballtalk
@AlexRollinsNFL Long arm with him is kind of funny because his arms are very short for an edge, but I think he does have plenty of pop in his hands - as you can also see when setting the edge in the run game - to set up his momentum and drive guys backwards.

Funny thing is look at both of their physics Bossa brothers and the weight room in high school everyday look at the thighs and their arms eating Hutchinson is skinnier he ain't trying to do all that weight work but he asked to frame to put on weight later at 67 if he put on weight and had the legs in the arms that Nick Bosa does my God he would be 285 easy Hutchinson is strong right now wait till he gets to the NFL training room and his trainers are giving them the NFL supplements he'll get big he'll get strong right now that just ain't his game it's funny a Jacksonville fan said boy we got lucky look at how small Aiden is look at those small skinny arms well we'll see how it pays off for Jacksonville and how it pays off for the Lions just cuz you got smaller legs and smaller thighs don't mean s*** ain't got to have biceps like a bodybuilder to be a good Edge rusher

Not that it's as important, but the hype just isn't there on this class either. Hutchinson appears to be the Jags #1 overall pick, but even so it doesn't feel like he's the slam dunk

In terms of slam dunks maybe not, however because covid led to guys getting an extra year of eligibility a lot of good, but not great, prospects stuck around another year and we're now seeing the backlog come forward. There are a TON of good prospects in this draft and it's arguably the deepest ever.

@Jacob Thomas Bruh, they played on OSU, they had better teams than Hutch. Bosa had like 10 teammates drafted. Bosas were better prospects than Hutch, but not because of athleticism, but because of they were extremely refined and were as safe as prospects get, but without incredible upside. Hutch seems a bit more explosive, but little less refined. And "being slow in pursuit" is a stupid argument. You are drafting a pass rusher, not an off ball linebacker or a safety.

As a Jaguars fan this is draft is kind of disappointing, not because it lacks talent but because there is no absolute difference maker. Hutch is talented but he doesn't give me the same feeling that the Bosa brother's or Chase Young and Myles Garrett gave me. The #1 pick isn't really an optimal pick this year and that's par the course for Jacksonville.

His length is going to be a huge problem in the nfl. How effective was he against future NFL tackles? Not at all. He got dominated by ever tackle with length. His quickness will work well for awhile but I just don’t see consistent pass rush effectiveness in the NFL. I see a good motor player who is maybe a 6-8 sack guy and 3rd down specialist.
Tim Jackson
Tim Jackson 7 meses atrás
Had absolutely no problem against NPF, Curne, Rasheed Walker, Bruss, Jones, Beach, Skoronski, Kirkland, Mumford. If your opinion is the Georgia game where he got belted 1 play than idk what to tell you. He is the only pick at 1. Work ethic, motor, leadership, smart, numbers, athleticism. I look at players who made the entire team better, made the secondary better.

BludAardvark
BludAardvark 8 meses atrás
IMO pressure is more of a front 4 group stat. There are ways for teams to play around the land mine at the edge if that is the only thing a team has. BUT if they also have interior linemen who can push through to disrupt the QB, then every lineman's efforts adds value to potentially disrupting the play on passing downs.
Mitchell Bassler

Pressures can lead to incompletions and interceptions because of hasty decisions by the quarterback. To me, the sack is an overrated stat. It’s important but not as important as many people make it out to be.

Thoughts on the weird hate that KT is getting recently? Some people having dropping out of the top 10. Micah Parsons had the same “character concerns” last year that caused him to drop out of the top 10, it was just stupid in my opinion
Mitchell Bassler

@I_Feel_bad_for_ my_haters - Yeah, but I’m not sure if that was because of a character issue or something else. The Cowboys have proven time and time again that they will draft and trade for players with character issues (Charles Haley, Micah Parsons, Ezekiel Elliott) *OR* add reclamation projects with similar issues (Aldon Smith).

@AlexRollinsNFL - I dunno. I saw the Bosa Brothers as being much more physically dominant than Hutchinson. Granted, I don’t watch nearly as much game film as you do, but Hutchison seems rather average as far as NFL prospects go.

He's got to win with technique over everything but Nick Bosa was kind of the same way. I agree Hutchinson isn't the freak athletic type even though his combine numbers suggest so

He'll be fine. You don't have to be Bosa or Myles Garrett to be considered good.

he was a projected top 15 pick before he tore his acl at his pro day and he probably wouldve gone to the ravens in the first round had that not happened because they knew they could get him much later and end up with 2 elite prospects

The one thing that could doom him? Probably getting drafted by the lions

It would be kinda cool if he spearheaded the lions back to relevancy. As a Packer fan, divisional games have become almost boring with bears, lions, and vikings sucking all the time. NFC North needs some excitement.
