Hey Wolfe! I really do like your content and especially the paint intro. However, this bonus content is held back by, I don’t know, a lack of preparation, I guess. Like citing that tweet. Just have it open in an extra tab. Besides this, it’s all good. But maybe that’s why only 2/3 of viewers are subscribed. ;)

To further elaborate with practical examples: In Minecraft, the Seed you use to generate the world can be reused to generate that random world every time. In Fire Emblem 3H (MUCH more similar to this Pokemon case), if one of your units doesn't get a crit on an enemy, you rewind time and try again for that crit, but you will never get it because of your Seed. In order to get the crit, you have to "advance" the game's state in the Seed by performing other actions, i.e. attacking or moving some other units, then trying again to see if you rolled the crit. Once a Seed is generated, it does not change for the duration of the match. However, the odds of events happening are still as they were (i.e. Sheer Cold still has a "30% chance" of hitting), it's just that if you know what Seed you're on, you can use specific moves to advance the seed to the 30% of the locations that give you Sheer Cold hitting. I'm not a professional programmer, this is just my understanding as it pertains to RPG mechanics.

@Iyokuu Anything with a "random" element, from if you hit your move to critical hits to damage ranges to secondary effect procs In fact, go watch a speedrun of a gen 4 game and you can see they control the IVs of the starter they get via starting the game after setting the clock to a specific time in order to control the seed generated for the game, since those games used the system clock to generate a seed. You can then guarantee certain IVs as long as you perform the exact same actions in game (i.e. no unnecessary pokemon caught or actions taken, anything with random chance involved will advance the seed's state)
Francisco J.G.
Francisco J.G. 2 meses atrás
@Iyokuu it can be anything. Accuracy, secondary effect being applied, IV's and nature of hatched pokémon, shiny encounter, etc. - the game just needs a specific formula for the drawn number in each case.

@Jean Rosario So what exactly do the numbers represent in Pokémon’s case? The accuracy of hitting said move?
Torque von Thorne
Torque von Thorne 2 meses atrás
In HoMM 5 chances to do the highest possible damage were so impactful (the enemy would retreat his hero faster when AI calculated that it was about to lose) that spending 5 minutes reloading trying to influencing the seed for the maximum amount of damage was better than playing with caution.

If you are confused, here is an easy explanation. At the beginning of every turn, an accuracy seed is generated between 1 and 100. For example: Turn 1: 75 Turn 2: 91 Turn 3: 15 In order for a move to hit, the seed must be LOWER OR EQUAL to the accuracy of the move. Air Slash has an accuracy of 95 so, on Turn 1 it will hit since 75 is less than or equal to 95. However, a move like Sheer Cold will miss, since it's 30 accuracy is lower than 75. On turn 3, since 15 is lower than 30, Sheer Code will hit. The problem, is that these accuracy seeds are the same for every single battle, so you can easily manipulate the game and always pick a move that will hit. This is 99% an oversight error by Game Freak and will be fixed in a patch. Its a very easy problem to fix

Also plausible that there was a dev branch that let you set the RNG seed that somehow got left into the prod code. After all, it's pretty difficult to troubleshoot an interaction if you have to rely on it happening randomly.

Normally a RNG would be seeded with the current clock time, in milliseconds or something on that order of precision. Because the clock time increases 1000 times a second, you're guaranteed to get unpredictable numbers from your generator. In this case, it's possible that the RNG is putting the same seed every time. My guess is that there's code that attempts to get the system clock time, but the code fails and returns 0 instead, as a fail state. The game doesn't check for a fail result and just uses the 0 as the seed. Since the seed is always the same, if you use a set of moves and then an OHKO move and the OHKO connects, you can guarantee that if you use those same moves in the same order, your OHKO will always hit. This principle is true for any moves with less than 100 accuracy.

@Aleksander 3702 I think that's a question all explanations have to contend with. Likely the battle stadium server is running a different version of the battle software. Perhaps they fixed whatever mistake was causing the set seed, but the server never updated their code. If true, it means a fix would be very easy to do because it could be done all internally.
Dunkleosteus
Dunkleosteus 2 meses atrás
@Aleksander 3702 different code, presumably. Could be something else they're doing at the same time causes the getSystemTime or whatever it is to fail only in that state. If the same function works in other contexts, there'd be even less of a chance that they'd notice it was broken.

@Dinosaur Time and Funny videos also, pokemon games have had almost the same formula for years. As far as I know Scarlet and Violet are not made by different devs. If they don’t have a template of tests they’ve used in LITERALLY EVERY pokemon game up to this point they don’t deserve to call themselves developers.
Pete

@Dinosaur Time and Funny videos this one in particular would be extremely easy to catch. In game dev we do something called ‘testing’ perhaps you’ve heard of it. Not having a test to ensure randomness or AT LEAST a test that the battle outcome is different if you run the same simulation multiple times. This is a pretty big blunder but you probably know nothing about game development at all

Turn to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is God who died for our sins and God raised Him from the dead on the 3rd day. He loves us more than anyone. He created us and loves us. Call upon His name! Heaven and Hell are real places. We need to repent and turn to Him. We have all sinned against God. Pray and seek Him. Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the righteous One who loves us. The Kingdom of God is at hand. “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:38-39 KJV “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 KJV “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 KJV “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36 KJV “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15 KJV “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Luke 11:9-13 KJV “And he spake this parable unto them, saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” Luke 15:3-7 KJV “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” Hebrew 9:27-28 KJV “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:35-40 KJV “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:28-31 KJV “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 10:32-33 KJV “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13 KJV “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:5-6 KJV “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:13-20 KJV “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” 2 Philippians 2:4-11 KJV “But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:24-31 KJV

For anyone wondering, computers cannot create random numbers because they rely on binary, and thus are discrete systems, they instead use fractal equations like the Mandelbrot set because it’s an equation in geometry that produces increasingly irrational numbers and diverges to chaos, it’s a pretty cool subject in number theory

@Derek Albanese While it may be true that the universe is deterministic, I'm not convinced that such a statement can be meaningful under our current understanding of it. This is because the Uncertainty Principle guarentees that it is impossible for enough to be known about the universe that the outcome of given events can be calculated in a deterministic manner. Furthermore, one of our current best physical models of the universe (quantum mechanics, which the UP is from) is probabilistic in nature, never allowing the outcome of any given event to be known in advance; only giving the chance of each possibility. It is clear that we do not understand this universe perfectly. It may be that the probabilistic equations introduced by QM are simply reflections of the impossibility of making perfect measurements, but it's far to early to claim so with confidence.

@Spout Boes I know about the RNG devices based on certain, seemingly random soundwaves. They are only seemingly random because it is probably humanly impossible to make an algorithm or identify any pattern, but if we did have perfect omniscience and intellect then we would know that it is not truly random either. Technically, we do already know that they aren't, but they might as well be because they are currently the closest devices we have to it.

@Derek Albanese hardware rng modules can make true random numbers, especially if they sample quantum phenomena like radioactive decay.
Derek Albanese

Binary has nothing to do with it BTW. If computers ran on decimal (somehow), then they still could not produce something truly random. In fact, nothing in real life can. Everything is calculatable. The number of variables involved just makes it increasingly difficult to calculate to the point that we accept something as being random.

@nsiderultimaseth considering the skills exhibited by GF while developing new games I doubt even another 6 months on this game would improve it by that high of a margin. It would still be a in a “rushed and unfinished state” according to the community regardless. You can’t stay in the dirty tank forever and if this was the state of the game by its release then it would still require giant overhauls to the functions that would simply take way longer then you’d normally think. Partially it’s my Xenoblade fan brain rolling about how much better monolith simply is at making games on the consoles given to them, but the vast difference between these 2 franchises, who have anime aesthetic artstyle, release exclusively on Nintendo consoles, with similar development times astounds me. There’s clearly one outstanding issue, and when you’re the one of the most popular franchises in the world with the Nintendo communities ravenous as they are. The whole delay eventually becomes a good game only comes out in the retrospective rather than being an active statement.

@VariaReaver Deadlines aren't THE problem, but they are A problem. I would assume that given a larger development team Game Freak would be able to put out quality Pokemon games like they did for over 15 years, but for some reason they have not expanded their team to the scale a massive title like Pokemon would normally have. If they want to keep releasing games on a super tight schedule, they need more manpower. If they don't want more manpower, they need a more lax schedule.

Sword/Shield had a glitch where Sucker Punch would fail under specific circumstances. If I remember it was fixed pretty quickly despite it being a really obscure glitch. When testing a game, randomness is usually turned off to make sure RNG isn’t influencing anything. This glitch was almost definitely an oversight, and one that isn’t hard to fix. Literally all they have to do is disable fixed seeds for battles.

Remember that Battle Stadium is used for ICs, which is used for CP and Japanese Nats qualifications.... so it is a big problem. Imagine if TAs/Jap Nats qualifications were determined by sheer cold speed ties (I don't know how speed ties get resolved with the same seed, presumably which trainer card gets put on the left/right at the start of the battle which I know affects some niche mechanics. Imagine entering a match, noticing your card is on the wrong side and immediately forfeiting)

I have a hunch this happened because at some point during development a developer was debugging something and needed a static seed and the code that made the seed static wasn't backed out before it went into production. This is probably an easy fix and I would expect it to be patched fairly quickly.

For anyone wanting a quick and dirty explanation of RNG seeding: RNG is, in most cases, a very long list of randomized values. Stupendously long. Whenever something "random" needs to happen, the generator just moves to the next number on the list, and the program does some math to then determine what should happen using that number. If there is no seed, the program will always start at the first value on the list, and then iterate from there, making things consistent. A "seed" is a number pulled from somewhere, usually something like the time at power on, or in the case of something online, when both players connect. The generator then uses the value at the seed's index to start iterating from, instead of starting at the first value in the line.

@Lord of Castamereit can be anything you could generate a random number and use that as a seed value to find your full on random values which is what gf should have done. What happens seems to be that they use the same seed to generate all these values which is why it is predictable. With these functions it's not true randomness though which is why this seeded value is allowing people to predict what numbers will actually be generated. Shouldn't be a crazy difficult issue to fix. Gamers would figure out system time seeds though people are smarter than you think. That one dude hacked a computer using it's fucking fan speed lmao. Most people are dipshits but the smart ones are next level clever lmao 😂😂 Ps I have impostor syndrome and absolutely am part of the dipshits

@Lord of Castamere it’d depend on the exact program, there’s tons of way of generating seeds. Like some programs use photos of lava lamps (which produce very random patterns) to generate their seeds. Stuff like date and time are simple things to pull from for seed generation, but there are other methods

Fun fact, in the Game Boy adaption of the Pokemon Trading Card game the RNG seed for coin flips was locked in at the start of a battle. You could also quit and restart battles. If you restarted a battle and remembered the first few flips, you could purposefully only use cards like the PokeBall on guarenteed heads.

This is also a good time to bring up that Pokémon is one of the only games tht doesn’t have balance changes throughout its games life cycles. It’s so frustrating that they don’t do this. When will gamefreak and the Pokémon company realize that if they cater to the competitive scene these games and their franchise will improve greatly.

We typically seed a random number using ticks. A tick in the number of seconds since Epoc time which is like Jan, 1st, 1970. So every time the RNG runs it will have a new seed. Unfortunately that’s hard to test. If you’re a QA at a game company you can’t test a truly random outcome so they seed with the same number every time to be able to predict an outcome.

My thoughts on SV: The number of new/updated assets is insane. The number of new Mechanic's is insane. The ENTIRELY NEW OPEN WORLD SYSTEM is insane. The debugging to the extent I only know of 2 other mechanical glitches in the game. The hours put into the game by the devs are frankly, ludicrous. The amount of hours of human life put into these games is easily in the hundreds of thousands. All of that insane effort, but not given the time to fix the numerous graphical glitches, to touch up performance issues, to prevent a massive mechanical issue that should have never occurred in the first place, this game is the pinnacle of crunch in Nintendo IMO. This game needed 1-3 more years in the pot to be finished. Yes, the game is *mostly* playable, good looking even. It's incredibly fun with some of the most unique ideas I've seen out of Pokemon ever. I have and will probably continue to have a great time with Scarlett. But every time I boot it up, I think about the effort put in for the low quality control out, and just get disappointed.

This could turn out to be a good thing, maybe. For such a big fundamental problem with the game, they really have to address it in a patch at some point, which brings the possibility of them fixing other issues plaguing this game as well. But, they could just as easily only fix this problem and nothing else or, even worse, completely ignore it and leave this game as a broken, buggy mess that will forever be only a shell of the enormous potential that it has.

@Derpalope Incorporations Basically, imagine the two seeds 30000 and 30001 ("seeds" are simply numbers which will be used for a specific purpose, in this case generating a sequence of other numbers). These will both do the same thing: determine what random events happen after they are generated. They will produce _completely different_ sequences of random events despite being so similar. The most common way to generate a seed for an RNG is to use some sort of clock. This clock will typically go up by one either every second or every millisecond, making it effectively impossible to know what seed is generated, making battles effectively random.

I would find the time sheer cold always hits turn 1 and then i will only play ranked at that time

To clarify on Wolfe’s explanation, when a calculator generates a “random” number, it’s not actually random, but rather a value pulled from random spot on something called a “random number table” where all the numbers are pre-generated. The computer then reads this table to determine the chances of success in a “random” event. A “seed” is essentially the row of numbers a computer starts with to determine the success of a move. Normally, the row should be “random” and therefore all the values should be indeterminate (unless you can memorize millions of rows of values, a feat humanly impossible). However, game freak totally fucked up here, and it’s likely due to the more open world nature of the game. In previous games, Game Freak designed the system so that every time you loaded up a save, the seed would change. I’ve been playing the old games recently, and you can test this out yourself by using emulator save states against the in-game save state. Emulators save at a specific point in time, thereby never reloading a seed, while every single time you load in-game, the outcome of a battle is different. You can essentially challenge a battle, and compare the differences using moves that have probabilities for second effects, as the emulator loads the same result every time, while the game loads a different result each time. People who play ROM hack challenges experiment with this often to achieve a desired result (unless they nuzlocke it lol). But in an open world game, the save state is continuous. The seed is only generated when the world is generated, and so to make every value random, you have to have those programs separately pull values for different encounter rates. The big problem here is that Game Freak might have messed up the code for Battle Stadium. While the numbers generated for the battles in the world will be continuously generated per player, meaning every gym battle and challenge will feel different, the numbers in the Stadium must be generated from the “beginning” of their preset line every time. This creates this silly situation, where if you only memorize the numbers for a single line of “random” numbers, you can predict the outcome of a move. It’s a simple fix, really, just adjust the random number generator to select from multiple different lines every time a battle loads up, rather than from world generation. The only problem is that GF is really bad at fixing loose ends, as seen from the numerous world gen bugs throughout the game. Whether they can actually pull it off or not is up to them.

So, the good news is that if Nintendo is aware of this it is not hard for them to patch it. They might not even need to patch it on the switch and instead can include it in the server patch for battle stadium. Considering all the issues that made it into the game on release I'm not too surprised this issue is out there. I would expect that the devs intend for the first VGC patch to be the real release of battle stadium and as such this should be fixed in that. But if they never patch this all the excitement I had for VGC kinda gets drained away

I don't exactly know how the seed advances, but since it always starts on the same number, the seed can be determined on any move. The seed is used in an algorithm to determine if the move hits, so this doesn't guarantee sheer cold always hits, it just allows you to set up a turn where you know it will hit.

I honestly do think they fix this one, just because I feel like the rush for Scarlet and Violet make the most sense if you consider in the context of “VGC has been using Sword and Shield for the last five years and we need to change things up to make it more interesting.” Add in terastalization being something that adds more variety to competitive, the trailers specifically showing off new competive items and moves, the classes actually taking the time to break down numbers and other things that have gone unsaid in Pokemon games before, Scarlet and Violet just seem like they’re really REALLY trying to appeal to the competitive scene. At least they do to me as someone who knows nothing about competitive Pokemon other than watching Wolfey. And with that lens there’s no way they don’t fix a bug that could (or could be perceived to) affect competitive

If anyone wants an analogy: You could imagine that random seed is like a shuffling method for a deck of cards. If someone gave you a stack of shuffled cards, you would have no way of knowing what card is on top until you draw (effectively, it is random). But, if you knew _exactly_ what method the person used to shuffle those cards, then by repeatedly playing card games with that deck, shuffled in the same way, you're going to start noticing that the cards come out in the same order every time. Pseudorandom number generators rely on the fact that the consumer of the generator does not know the seed + the method of generation; once the consumer knows it, it is cracked open and can be exploited.

This is why you don't buy games like SV. They're not trying to be great they're trying to be passible. They're trying to see how little they can get away with. So this is obviously really really bad, and I’m not interested in minimizing the problem, but it drives me bonkers seeing people talk about “poor optimization” or “spaghetti code” in ways that make it clear that these are just words they’ve heard people say about software. And worse than that, when people talk about the developers being incompetent or stupid. Things like this (and all the problems with Scarlet and Violet) don’t happen because developers are being dumb or just don’t know any better. They happen because the developers weren’t given the time and resources to get it right, and/or because of poor leadership and organization.

This is my conspiracy theory, but hear me out, I feel like they gave us a game that they deemed was "good enough for now". In my head, they were making this game, ran out of time, and were like, "Okay, our main demographic are kids. A majority of copies purchased will be Christmas presents for said kids. If we shipped this now, could we get this fixed and patched before Christmas?" And I think they answered that question with a yes and here we are in this timeline. I'm sticking to this in my head and I'm holding out hope that patches were already planned to be released at set intervals. But it could be a lot of hopium so who knows?

Not just a theory, you got it. Profit motive is always gonna be the explanation for a companies behavior under capitalism, at least if it is publicly traded. The whole system pushes for short term profits over long term consequences, and companies have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders to maximize profits. If profits don't go up quick, shares are sold quickly too, which incentivizes this race for the benefit of momentary owners over the desires of customers or individual employees

Hopefully this helps explain things... As Wolfe said, computers are bad at actually being random. By design, they are set to take an input, follow rules, and spit out the correct outcome. To bypass this, computers essentially have a "random digit table" of tons of numbers, then use specific variables to choose numbers from the table. It could be like "3rd number of your device id times the last 3 digits of the time value of the request. That is the position you go to on the random number table to create your random-ish number". For those of us old enough to remember, our math textbooks had dozens of pages of randomized numbers. However, you may also remember that everyone in your class had the same textbook with the same "random" table. Think of the book as being the "seed". You have the same directory that you're pulling the numbers from, so if you know the rules that are used to select which number gets pulled and the variables are easy enough to track, you can fool the system into picking the number you want. The trick around that is to have multiple seeds. Let's say everyone has a different textbook for every time they try to create a random number. Now, because the random digit table is different each time, you can't rig the system to spit the numbers you want. In short: rather than using new seeds (textbooks or starting points) for these randomization calculations, S/V are re-using the same seed (using the same table each time). As a result, savvy folks can take advantage of the fact that the computer can't actually choose things randomly and force particular outcomes, like Sheer Cold being successful, when they want. Hopefully that helps!

Always funny seeing a subject you know about get introduced in a crowd that may not be aware of it. But yup, nothing is truly "random." There's always more info that explains why whatever random thing occurred actually happened. Say it's a deck of cards. You don't pull a random card off the top. You pull the card that was on top after the shuffle. We try to simulate randomness on computers in a number of ways. One of the most common is using "random seeds," a number plugged into an equation that'll spit out more numbers which are used for your successes and failures. If you use the same random seed, you'll always get the same pattern of successes and failures. So just always use sheer cold on the turn that it will land.

Skasaha
Skasaha 2 meses atrás
If the player can manipulate turn order to make the Sheer Cold fire at a specific step in the turn, they can essentially pick the random number used for its accuracy check. It's probably fairly difficult to keep it going past turn two, but as long as you can keep track of where in the random number list you are, you can continue to manipulate turn order to have your Sheer Colds find the low numbers in the RNG table that let it hit.
Joseph Thomson

They’re not doing anything. A seed is a list of pseudo-random numbers that is generated when a game boots up or, in this situation, when an online game starts. That string of numbers will be used to determine checks for RNG, in this case whether a move hits. Typically there’s no way to guess what seed the machine is using, but due to a programming error the same seed is being used every time, leaving no randomness. Sheer cold will always hit when it reaches a particular point in the seed. I’m unsure with the specifics of how rng is normally calculated for Pokémon and this game in particular, but that’s the basic reasoning. Hope I explained it well enough.
Walace Andrade
Walace Andrade 2 meses atrás
Its due to the seed. The current seed being played in these matchs just so happens to allow a sheer cold hit after your first attack. I also heard 90% accurate moves always fail the first time you use it. Again, just so happen thats what the current seed outputs. You can only call computer games random because you never know what seed you are currently playing. As soon as it becomes public knowledge, everything can be tested in advance in order to ensure a specific %accuracy hits.

The "we don't even KNOW if they'll patch this!!!!" cynicism is pretty silly since they actually have patched online battles for similar issues in the past. Throwback to when XY came out and for a while you could literally use a third-party app to view EVERYTHING about your opponent's team, including the move they were going to use because this information wasn't encrypted. However, this was patched so quickly that no one even remembers the Battle Analyser meta existed since it wasn't around long enough to leave a huge impact.

Ok, does this happen in single player as well? I thought I was going crazy thinking accuracy was just broken in this game and gaslighting myself into thinking I just had insanely bad luck. I have had multiple boss battles (gyms, team star leaders, etc) where I would miss a 90% accuracy move like Play Rough three times in a row. And it just kept happening. It happened twice in two different battles during my Elite Four run. If the game isn't randomizing its accuracy seed this makes so much sense. I would have to have insanely horrid luck for it to happen as many times as it has in my playthrough.

I also have experienced seemingly-unlikely consecutive misses across multiple single-player raids, too. It was always with the same Pokémon, using a 90% move. Of course, due to the nature of randomness it's hard to know if it's the same as this, but it certainly seemed very unusual at the time...

There's a really effectivd way on top of random seeds to get as random as possible You use some sort of analog input like a sensor (i.e. the temperature sensor used to regulate the fan speed on the switch) and take one or some of the decimal places that's constantly changing and incorporate it into the random algorithm

Computers cannot truly do random values.I'm not actually convinced there's anything that can, although there are definitely things we can't figure out, which might as well be random as far as we're concerned. Computers have some functions that create patterns that might as well be random as far as we're concerned. But if you take 2 computers with exactly the same software and hardware, and give them the exact same input, they will always produce the same result, so it isn't truly random. A good way to hide this though is to give a different input to the random number function based on the time. If one computer has a random number requested, even a fraction of a second later than another computer, they'll generate a completely different number that might as well be unrelated. I can think of two things that could happen: A: The developers forgot to tie the random number generation to time. B (more likely): The developers intentionally did not tie the random number to time, because they were testing something, and wanted a consistent set of results. Then they forgot to change it back before shipping the game. In any case, this should be an easy fix.

Which is as you say insane! This needs to be fixed otherwiese it will just be a memorization game.

There are so many things they could randomise but they don’t. I am on my second play through and a certain food order is always the same. Why don’t they just randomise it. 🤷‍♂️

It may be wrong, but in a lot of cases seeds are generated based on a combination of lot of numbers, such as date and I think that server time may still be 0 as ladder has not started, and if a product using date is involved and that's a 0, it will always generate the same seed
