The Tethrd Phantom saddle was officially released at the ATA show in Indianapolis. This saddle has many changes over the Mantis saddle, which will still be offered in its current configuration. The Phantom has five main differences from the Mantis: 1) The geometry in which it's sewn, 2) The comfort channels in the bridge loops, 3) The adjustable amsteel bridge, 4) The construction of the lineman's loops, and 5) The location of the leg loop attachments.
Disclaimer: I am helping Tethrd with development and testing of products. This is a saddle which I personally helped test over the past season. More info about the Phantom or any Tethrd products can be found at: tethrdnation.com/

I just received my Phantom yesterday. Until now I've been using a rock climbing harness. I use the one stick method of climbing (you taught me how years ago). So my question is - how would you use the Phantom with the one stick method. I think you told me last year that you don't use the one stick method anymore, but I'd still like your input. Since there is no "center point of harness attachment", would you use the amsteel as the center point or would you maybe use a piece of rope to tie together the linesman loops? Thanks, as always.

Thanks so much for getting back to me - that method seems to work fine. Btw - I cannot explain how much enjoyment I get from your videos. I started hunting about 5 years ago and your tips and insight have really fueled my passion for this activity. Thanks a ton!

I'm uploading a video on the one stick with the Phantom after turkey season. But basically, I just set the bridge short and hook up right into the amsteel, and it works fine.

Newbie to saddles, but OG to stand hunting. With Predator climbing line, what cord do you recommend for friction knots, which friction knot do you prefer, and what do you favor for descending? Thanks! Hunt safely, my Friends!

In your personal opinion, what used your preferred saddle? Is the Phantom better than say the Aero Hunter Flex, or Wei's Yarak? Have you used the Yarak yet? I have an original Trophyline and the Kestrel. I like the 3 utility rings on the Yarak and the molle loops on the leg strap verses across the back. Please share your thoughts. I find your videos very informative, in-depth, and well put together. GREAT JOB!

If you want to give a company your money, have them never ship product to you, and then have to fight with them, and then have them fight you and your credit card company for 6 months to keep your money, then Tethrd is the company for you. DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
I dont know if there's any plans to. That said on my personal one I built the utilibridge system the other way because I'm a lefty. It's a little bit of work but the DIY is always an option. And the bridge still works as-is for leftys. You just cant use the prusik as a pivot stop.

I used to make a living out of a tree saddle, trust me this something your not going to want to hunt out of all day. Dumbest idea for hunting out of a tree that I have ever seen.

I’ve “sat” all day in a rock climbing harness essentially thanks to Garret’s videos from years ago. It’s essentially the same thing. With the platform or something else,(ring of steps/whatnot) you can sit/stand, adjust, etc...

Do you notice you get less hip pinch with those new comfort notches? I currently use the mantis w/ microfit adjusters to combat that issue. Great review, I've been waiting for this!
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
Yes. If I get hip pinch with the mantis I would adjust it to get rid of it. With the Phantom it seems like hip pinch is less of an issue to begin with, and the channels make it easy enough to adjust without the need for the micro fit adjusters.

I see the advantages of being easier to get into the woods and ability to get more shot angles. In most stands you are in the stand with the backup plan of a harness if something goes wrong. What is the back up plan if you are already only supported by the one rope? I am sure its strong but if there is human error or lean back to far?
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
Good questions... The weakest link in the chain with a saddle is generally the tether at ~6000lb tensile strength. They have also passed the TMA harness drop tests. If something were to break, it's true that you wouldn't have any backup. It's just extremely unlikely. G2Outdoors did a test on his channel a while back where he attempted to purposefully cut rope of multiple styles with a broadhead and wasn't really able to within normal means. It's also very tough to fall out of. One of the first things I like to recommend to people who are brand new it to hang at ground level and spin upside down to see how secure it really can be.
Tony Morphy
Tony Morphy 4 meses atrás
Honest question, What is the advantage of this over a tree stand? Besides portability.
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
Portability is a main reason a lot of guys would try it. Apart from that, greater mobility around the tree, ability to maintain better archery form on angled shots, setups which allow you to hide behind the tree in respect to the intended deer movement, and often tree selection can all be seen as other advantages. I also believe the side profile looking from the ground up of a guy in a saddle isn't as noticeable as it is when sitting on a stand. Minimalist hang-ons like the Assault, LWCG etc, also have better portability than the average 14-20lb stand, and allow great tree selection as well. The way I often look at it is that I can be very effective in either a minimalist hang-on or a saddle for mobile hunting, but the saddle does it in a smaller, lighter package. If I know the spot I'm going to is perfectly laid out for a hang-on (lots of branches on backside of tree, slight lean away from expected movement, etc) I would choose a hang-on. But for all other scenarios I lean towards the saddle. Hope that helps.

Thinking about picking up a saddle for bow hunting. This seems to be the best setup for run and gun hunting but how about an all day sit? Would it wear you out or is it more comfortable than a millennium lock on or high quality climber
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
Probably the only system truly comparable to a Millenium lock on would be the JX3 Hybrid. It has a ridgid seat and back panel and a metal fork that holds you off of the tree. That said, I've hunted plenty of times all day in more minimalist saddles like this one and others. With a recliner strap and knee padding, I'm able to do it fine.

DIY Sportsman that makes sense, I guess you can’t really go anywhere if you fall. When can I order one of these?
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
It's not needed because you are constantly under tension with the tether. If you slip off the platform you just swing into the tree. Even so, the saddles are still drop tested with dummy's as if they were TMA harnesses and have still passed. There's a test video on Tethrd's channel.

You can either use the recliner to lean against, or you can lean forward and rest against the bridge with your arms crossed. Both work well but the recliner is the best for comfort on long sits.

I’m not a saddle hunter, thinking about it as a way to add more hunting locations without buying the tree stand. Is it functional to set permanent climbing sticks with a lifeline, connecting the bridge to the Prusik knot on the life line as climbing, eliminating the use of the lineman’s belt. Then stay connected to the lifeline in the hunting position and coil up the lifeline from the ground and attach it to the tree?
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
Yes, you could hunt with it that way. The key would be, like you said, to coil up the excess when up in the tree so it isn't swinging around underneath you.

Is it necessary to have such a large diameter rope (the one that goes around the tree attached to the amsteel).
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
No, you can use smaller diameter ropes such as Sterling Oplux in 8mm (which is what I typically use). On the smaller rope though, the Ropeman 1 is technically out of spec so you'd need a Ropeman 2, CT Rollnlock, Beal Jammie etc.

Spend alot of time in a harness up in iron .one thing im worried about is that if we fall and have all our weight in the harness for anytime over 15 minutes we are concerned about blood clots and circulation danger .is the same factors of danger occur with this saddle after being in it 8 to ten hours which is an average hunt time .

DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
The thing you are describing (suspension trauma) isn't really a concern with hunting saddles. That's because the load is distributed well across your entire backside. There aren't really any places that dig in. It's the same reason guys can comfortably hunt from them for hours. Some of the safety harnesses in industry designed primarily to catch falls have smaller contact areas that can dig into your body and eventually cut off blood flow.

With the way tethrd has figured out a way to make amsteel work with a prusik for a bridge, would this mean we could make an amsteel tether that could world too?
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
@bowhuntingforlife When they drop tested the new amsteel bridge with a 300lb dummy going 6ft at the third party lab, the prusik latched down and only slid about a half inch. The unknowns are abrasion against the tree, etc, but guys have been using amsteel for stick mods (including myself) for years.
bowhuntingforlife
bowhuntingforlife 4 meses atrás
DIY Sportsman Would you consider it a safe alternative? I’d prefer to use amsteel as it’s much easier to make an spliced eye. If I go to oplux I’ll either have to pay for a sewn eye or use a bulkier knot.
DIY Sportsman
DIY Sportsman 4 meses atrás
It's funny you mention that. It has been tried and appears to work (limited testing). That said, there isnt much bulk savings over an 8mm rope like Oplux, which you can also run a mechanical ascender on.

I took a buck on public land that was right below me. Nearly all my presets r in places where I am very close & can wait 4 the perfect angle. I have an expensive aluminum stand which I used 2 take that public land buck. U attach it 2 a very solid aluminum block. I want 2 use it only on a close 2 home place which is private. Everywhere else I will be using my flex. The best thing about that aluminum block stand is the seat which I will be replacing with a saddle with multiple more options & opportunities.

Garrett, I found it interesting last fall 2 see u hunting in that prototype with Predator pants covered by it. I have a Kestrel flex on order with Predator. I do like the channels on that 1 which might be more important on a saddle that is a little stiffer but better quality from year 2 year. I like 2 wear layers of fleece so I can have longer sits.
