I think the vision answers most of those questions..imagine a world where you're "technical" was hardly technical which begs the question what happens when models have the ability to compare themselves with other models.

Overall great questions. Something I really want to know is how dexterous the Tesla Bot will be. For example, could it sew ripped pants? Could it preform a fried rice toss in a wok? Could it pick raspberries (the most delicate fruit) from the bush? Elon mentioned that their base goal is to have these robots fill the role for jobs people don't want to do and I feel that if it can do these three things well, it will be a huge success.

It's fair what Elon answered regarding open source. If they created the code, put it to open source for others to grab it without spending any money is not a good idea from the point of view of finance - They owned it, so the other companies have to pay for it. I totally agree.
w3w3w3 3 meses atrás
@SandsnowStorm7 He litteraly has used opensource code in Tesla and is getting sued for it because he has not made the code he used it with public as you are meant to acording to the licenses.... stop bootlicking elon... he is a fool..
Anne Ahlert
Anne Ahlert 4 meses atrás
And yet, we have seen from other platforms and systems -- such as phone apps, etc-- that allowing others to freely use your source code makes for more ancillary products (such as games, gadgets, and custom uses for the hardware). If they keep their software open source, they can also encourage more people to create more uses for their hardware, and sell more hardware (the way phone companies have sold more phones because there are so many apps that can appeal to so many potential phone owners). However, if he actually wishes his technology to not be used for wars and killing, he will have to withhold the source code and key software points. Otherwise, the military can buy a few hundred if these and program them to be super-soldiers.

Yeah everybody wants free lunch

That's not the point. Theres licenses that make it so that the code can be open source, and if you want other people to use your code, others have to make the code open source as well. It benefits evryone

@Giantdad it's not that us women aren't smart enough, it's just that we're not brought up to learn it. Stereotypes are constantly unintentionally being enforced, and unfortunately that has lead to computer science being significantly dominated by men. and so in the case of Tesla, if 10000 men apply Vs 200 women, then clearly the 10000 men is gonna have a higher probability of having a genius. Stereotypes have a significant impact on society and this is one of them. If the same number of women applied as men, then the number of people smart enough will be theoretically identical on both sides

@Eric Fitts problem being what happens to thoes who can’t do higher thinking what happens to thoes of us who succeed in the basic things. Not even talking in a job sense as being replaced by a computer I’m talking societal. Who says we wanna live our lives doing higher thinking . It’s a shame because the world and it’s tedious task are beautiful and so human and replacing them makes the world desolate and it loses its humanity. I just think advancements as such sound cool and interesting like the no check out seven 11 thing they where tryna do sounds cool but it’s just boring. It’s so depressing this thought of us living like this. It creates problems all for what a little more free time. It sounds ideal but if u spend ur whole life with free time and having no common struggle or worry we lose touch and we forget the sadness wich just makes us unappreciative of the happy ness . I dont know this is just a real fear there’s no justifiable answer for the questions it raises .

I disagree on a few areas, I forgot to take notes. I am sure his team is hundreds, why just these 10, where are the babe engineers? I think these guys are the equivalent of a Tom Brady offensive line..Why use training data to predict the road direction around the mountain, when you can use GPS, or are you saying the training data is the GPA system? How do you account for terrorist's using the cars, how can you prevent the communist Chinese from hacking the software and creating virus's in the software, sending 50,000 cars off the road, what happens when the Neural net crashes and 50,000 cars are using it at that moment, do you have manual driving that kicks in and alerts the passenger to take over, how far advance is the Bot compared to the BD robot, does you bot dance as well? training data is not perfected data, there is random data that appears on the road every minute of every day. computers crash all the time, do you have backup servers that kick in instantly. How can you secure your data so that it is not hacked, how will the neural net handle the competitors neural nets interfering with one another and hacking each other to keep in their own lane (Mercedes, Audi, BMW). Elon has the same back issue as me, he needs a chiropractic adjustment, wonder if they can embed a massage therapist in their seats.

Do tell us, just how do you plan for all of the worlds JOBLESS HUMANS to then pay for the food they eat? The water they drink? The resources that supply heating/electricity to their homes? Who pays for their Rent/Mortgages while theyre indulging in "Higher Things" like reading Books & hanging out with their community? How do they pay for Transport/Travel? Healthcare/Medication? And what do you think happens to the worldwide (Consumption Levels) of things like Electricity usage? Water Consumption? Food intakes? levels of Fossil fuel usage.. IF everybody is just free of their jobs & free to spend their time on "Higher Things?" It Sounds like you've really thought it all through, so id love to hear your concept?

Absolutely brilliant. This type of presentation is why Tesla doesn’t need a multi million dollar per month marketing and branding budget (like their “competitors”) While legacy automakers are spending endless millions on ads that people despise watching, Tesla is paying a handful of employees to hang out in front of a camera documenting things their demographic (potential employees and/or consumers) is interested in, a couple times a year ...and probably getting more impressions than their competitors can buy, for effectively superior marketing reach 100% organically.

Stop assuming as soon as robots make jobs redundant everything becomes free, no it won't, if housing or anything isn't free at what point would you have time to be pursuing those things?? Never because you'd be too busy looking for a job that a robot isn't better than you at performing for free. Its interesting when the question about emotion and companionship was asked there was this elephant in the room silence and a general uncomfortable laughter. Possibly the most important loaded gun question besides optimus's economic impact. Musk is smart keeping it at the ground level lets see if it can walk and take a crap first and leave the the future to answer the rest. But I always use the TV series Sarah Conner chronicles and the Cameron robot character as a preview of how interconnected emotionally and socially we could become with this technology.

Science fiction saw this coming a long time before Musk was even a glint in the milkman's eye, because that's where we've been heading for decades. What we're experiencing now is the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our entire economy is about to change-- or implode.

@Alexandr Soldiernetizen I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, or that it's going to be easy. But some aspects (such as object recognition, spatial estimations, etc) can be carried over.
Alexandr Soldiernetizen
@Anne Ahlert That because I havent encountered a single individual here that actually understands how ML works. Its not a linear process. You dont necessarily get better results by using existing wheels to make better wheels. You hit a wall, and they have hit that wall. The cars CANT drive themselves yet. Tesla thinks by building this giant cluster and cramming all these kilowatts into cabinets they are going to hit some magical breakthrough point. Maybe they will, but 90% chance they dont. There is still overfitting, backpropagation error, ML brittleness, training neural nets is a black art, its not a given by any means and bigger nets wont necessarily solve the problems.
Anne Ahlert
Anne Ahlert 4 meses atrás
@Alexandr Soldiernetizen I understand what you're saying, but what others here are saying is that much of the learning and data analysis such as you're describing has already been done-- for autonomous vehicles, facial recognition, etc. They don't have to re-invent the wheel, they just have to use the existing wheels to make more advanced wheels.
Alexandr Soldiernetizen
@Giantdad Yeah, ok, well you obviously dont understand neural nets. It doesnt 'train itself'. Its not a brain. It has to be presented with thousands of examples, then the process of backpropagation has to be successful for the task of recognizing that which you want it to with enough accuracy. Most of the time, human intervention is required to adjust the weighting factors in critical layers manually or with software tools. Cramming nodes into neural processors wont light the spark of intelligence, its been tried. Its starting to look like real thought cant be reduced to computation, no matter how fancy the perceptron or activation function or ASIC.
Giantdad 4 meses atrás
@Alexandr Soldiernetizen Yeah. Tesla's approach is far different. And, once you've trained the net to it's potential, you don't need to do it again, why do so if the technology and the AI already exists to use? And we only need to train it far enough to the point where it can in essence, train itself. And Tesla states that the computer is arbitrarily upgradable, just add more training nodes. If they can nail down the manufacturing to maybe 10 million units a year, they WILL solve this problem. Tesla will be the first company to create Artificial General Intelligence, then Super Intelligence. I see this happening in maybe 20 or 30 years, Super Intelligence at least. General Intelligence is likely a decade or a decade and a half away.

Is there a lot of utility in humanoid robots vs specific task oriented robots? Is it just more realistic / useful to have something that can mimic a multitude of human tasks? For example you dont replace factory workers with humanoid robot workers, you instead redesign your assembly line with multiple task specific robots so that each one is extremely good at just one specific thing rather than okay at many things.

The reason he brushes it off with a non-answer is because he knows they aren't going to have anything in a years time, so why think about the economics when it's a nonsense. I'd happily be proven wrong, but this is another example of Elon Musk selling snake oil. Edit: Sadly Elon Musk has been so overly hyped to the general public they think he's someone who cares about more than just himself.

I personally know group of 4 brothers who inherited their father's large multi-acre farm. They agreed to keep the farm in their family by leasing the land to other local farmers to use. They all have other jobs and live in other areas, but wanted to keep the land in their family as it had been for over 100 years. These are middle-class people and wanted to keep their land out of the hands of the mega-farms and wealthy investors in their area. God bless the families like this that can come up with this kind of solution. A few people owning most of the land anywhere is a problem....absolute power corrupts absolutely.

@RoyBrown777 Agreed. The visible water is all at the North Pole, and it's ice, because the temperatures are average -60oC on Mars, going down to -125oC at the poles in Winter. So it's like moving 1000s people to Antarctica, if Antarctica also had no Oxygen.

Man Dog
Man Dog 4 meses atrás
@john galt Think bigger: solar collection in orbit. Place a large collection platform in solar orbit and you have a tunable solar shade to control global warming. Sounds like a job for autonomous robotic intelligence. HEY ELON!
Giantdad 4 meses atrás
@RoyBrown777 You haven't seen elon's plan then. His plan is to manufacture hundreds of ships and tens of boosters per year, and sending them every 2 years in a fleet of ships, maybe more than ten per transfer window. And, the window isn't really a be all end all. It only means that it takes the least amount of DeltaV (How many meters/s your ship can add to its current velocity, which is how you move in space) in that window to get to Mars. Let's do some quick math. Say they send 15 ships every 18 months (1 and a half years) until 2065. Each ship carries 100 tons, so we'll add the payload in as well. If they start sending ships by 2026, they can send 390 Starships to Mars, which equates to about 390,000 tons of cargo. On the most conservative estimates.

Dojo can potentially become Teslas largest revenue scheme since it is designed with SaS in mind. Tesla could even offer its pre-trained 3D vision stacks which can be further trained by other companies. I can easily imagine a product aware supermarket stacking robot that can recognise items without needing any barcode (suppose it is obscured) or RF tags. It is high time extra vehicular activity in space be done by humanoid robots rather than people. No need for Oxygen or pressurisation. Doing away with suits would improve dexterity.
