Duly noted!...Less we forget though, those of us who've experienced/ endured that level of trauma could absolutely care less about the "societal charade" of being liked and or accepted. Sometimes there's value in interior "scar tissue" i.e, , being a more patient, empathetic, conscious and- most importantly- apologetic parent as we, ourselves, continue to grow. Which, I believe is much more in line with the theory of "go in the complete opposite direction" of what was demonstrated to us by our fathers.

My father passed in 2021. I remember people at the funeral speaking about how reliable he was. I was literally mind blown as one of the 5 children he did absolutely NOTHING for. And when l stood up to speak, my mother was terrified lol. But l started off by saying “when a person leaves this earth. All that really matters is the good memories you have” And l went on to speak on the few good times we had. I could’ve slandered him for hours. But to me that’s spitting on that person’s grave

Gurl, I feel you. I went to my father funeral after meeting and getting to know him for about 4 months (at the age of 42) . I listen to people talk about how he helped his step-son and his older children (who both passed) and how good he was to people. 🙄 I was squirming and squeezing my man’s so hard that he kissed my hand. The nerve…

It's a trip how a person can be one way with some and one way with others. It will blow your mind how some people will speak on a certain person, and have you thinking...are they talking about the same person?!? Did they really know them?!? Who are they talking about ?!?

You know we’ve been conditioned to believe that! The decease lives their funeral & if all was not good then his/her life at the end even at the funeral should reflect his/her life, all memories of that person will not be good, so why not be allowed to say what your memory is, Society has conditioned Us to be embarrassed to tell the Truth at home going services, he’ll they’re gone, the truth will not hurt them! I decided Not to even go to my seed barrier’s funeral! He never took the opportunity to have a relationship so my thought I will keep that same energy during his death, if he didn’t want a relationship in life, then I wasn’t gonna fake it @ the end! I wasn’t angry at him anymore, went to therapy to work through All of the baggage that he left me with.

Wow this interview bought me to tears…I feel like he was describing my father. This is exactly what I witnessed as a child - even present day & I’m angry! My younger sister doesn’t want marriage because of what we’ve witnessed growing up… These thoughts & feelings have motivated me to go to therapy & I just hope it helps me, but I really want to send a letter to my parents - my father specifically and address the bs that he has done my entire life to not only me & my sis, but especially my mother‼️

@Tom Sea i understand what you are saying but it still doesn’t change the facts😅not having a masculine father with good morals and principles has dangerous effects on not only women but men as well confusing a lot of these lost children making them think good is bad and bad is good. I have witnessed this unfortunately😓once the men change the standards will change and the women will fall in line.

@Blue Balls That's cope. The black culture invests in pushing dysfunction and BW are not children who can't dicepher what is right from wrong. Lastly, this interview and book is also why this community will continue to experience dysfunction. Haven't people had crazy, reckless mothers before? Have books been written about them? The Black community lives off publicly despising their men and not glorifying the great ones. That is why they're where they are and it'll continue till they learn how relationships work and why 80% of the children here are born out of wedlock.

To Lala’s point that Stephen A doesn’t care about what ppl think of him. . . when you have a parent who doesn’t care about/love/support you, like his father, it prepares you to not get caught up on what others have to say about you. His book is really good.

I was just commenting how learning about his upbringing, I better understand the things about his personality I don't like, along with the things I do. It's not just about, not caring about what people think about him, which goes into having a sense of empathy for others, and or what they think. But he can't give or extend to other people what he didn't have, doesn't know how to give, or was never extended to him.

I had a father similar to that. He was in and out when I say that is he lived there but he came home when he wanted. I’m the only child out of 22 half siblings. My siblings worship the ground he walked on. My memory is the guy that beat me with rings on his hand because I had a nightmare and screamed for my mom at the age of 10. He swole the whole left side of my face. That man was pure evil, to me and my mom. That was the last time he hit me. It would be at 13 I got him to stop hitting my mom. At 18 I put him out and was willingly to die but he was going with me because I had a child at a young age and she had to live in the house with me. She was not going to feel that energy or be around it. I’m 49 and there’s still things I remember until this day he did to me.

I didn’t show up to my fathers funeral this year but I had every intention of going but the day of I was glued to my bed with anxiety. My dad hurt me to the core of my being by leaving me on the side of the ride with his grandchildren. That cut deeper than the physical abuse I experienced. I don’t know why I was riddled with anxiety that day but I mourned him bc at the end of the day that was my dad. Why he didn’t love me I don’t know and I will never get to understand why he did me the way he did but I hope he is at peace!

Nah...Stephen A Smith was on point 100%. He expressed his preference and that was fine. Not everything is "black girl magic" and being pitted against each other.. Stop being so sensitive. The world doesn't owe you understanding. They are both great artists in their own right. La La I think is a great CO host and an addition to the Breakfast club but this wasn't his intent. We have 2 black quarterbacks for the first time in the Super bowl. If you have a preference over one over the other its what you prefer. Some of ya'll do too much. If you want to fall on the "sword" then talk about Jason Whitlock blaming Black women for the situation with the 5 cops. That is more of an issue then Stephen A talking about who he prefers.

@BIG Drawls " However the music game is different than the sports world" We LITERALLY rank who is the best hip hop artists 365 days a year , and nobody saying we pitting kendrick against j Cole. Heck MJ and Prince been debated who is the goat , and none of the fanbases call for infighting. It's just debates that will last for all of time. Everyone is entitled to their favorites, SAS included. We need to get to the point where we can respectfully disagree and move on, instead of attaching narratives that are false equivalencies, if I am unsure about what someone said, it is ok to ask rather than to assume. would save a lot of headaches and "cancel culture", in my honest opinion.

Man talk about fathers, my grandfather was the best father any man or woman could’ve had. Allah blessed me soo much in that. I didn’t miss my biological one but. I had some phenomenal mentors as well, uncles were dope as F! The attention, the convos, the examples he gave me, priceless. Without my Grandfather I would not have become the solid individual I have become. I was crazy fortunate, if not for him man I shiver to imagine the clown I would’ve become. R.I.P. Grandpa🐐🙏🏾✌🏾

What he said about Beyonce' and Rhianna is what plenty of people has said about so many people example Michael Jackson and Prince. Prince is a great performer but we all know that Michael Jackson is the greatest performer of ALL TIME. People have a right to like who they like period.
Another Point of View
@Laketra Nero, Why did you spell the word "period" instead of just putting a "." ?
Another Point of View
@Mike Pourch It is a difference. You might not see it or agree, but there is.

@R. M. "Catty" Yes. Something about that word captures it exactly for me. Like he's Flexing some basic "Alpha" male attitude while puttin off some catty feminine energy. The "cat fight" he conversationaly created was uncalled for and totally unnecessary. I agree. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There is just a difference for me between being asked for your opinion on someone and being asked to make a comparison between two individuals.

The point was that it was unnecessary. It wasn't a debate. All he could have said was he's looking forward to seeing Rihanna, and he hopes she does a great job. Instead, he used it as an opportunity to say she isn't as good as Beyonce. It's not hard to grasp. It was also catty for a male.
Another Point of View
I didn't think the issue or conversation was a debate about whether people have a right to like who they like. Sherris question wasn't about making a comparison. That's where Stephen took it. It's about Reading the Room. Reading the room is not about being right or speaking your truth. It's more about is it the right time and place to be right, and about speaking your truth in love. In a way that unites more than it divides. He would have been right to say what he wanted and felt to say at his Father's funeral, and what he said would have been the truth. But some people felt ut wasn't the right time and place.

He did come at Kyrie’s character… Impossible to talk about a talent without it inevitably reflecting something in their character. Sometimes ultra wealthy athletes & celebrities can just get weird. It’s just facts. Whatever they need to do to come back down the earth …do it. When they don’t their talent gets talked about and it feels like character assignation.

As a father who never met his dad, hearing SA say he went to his dad funeral to basically expose him for not being there made me feel a way, bc even though i never met my Sperm donor a funeral not the place for that.

Stephen’s family experience is typical of a woman’s plight….working hard and to the bone with a no good man at home. People always saying once the father is in the home it’s better. Clearly we have married single mothers out there doing everything with no help.

Great interview! I enjoy watching SAS on First Take. I remember that episode where he talked about Ayesha and Savannah. He did compare the two because at one point he insinuated that Ayesha should BEHAVE like Savannah. This was on the heels of him wondering why Ayesha was on magazine covers and not Savannah. That's what got him in trouble.
