This was entirely edited, and was supposed to be exported, in 48fps, not 50. Funny thing is, Premiere simply doesn't allow custom frame rates in its export window, despite supporting it as a sequence setting. I could have exported the Premiere file into After Effects and added the sequence to the render cue, but I couldn't because AE threw me an error every time I tried. That, combined with the legitimately unbelievable amount of bugs and errors and crashes left me feeling so exhausted and numb that I ultimately decided it was worth sacrificing one 25th of a second's worth of timing here and there. If you catch any editing errors, that'd be why. Oh well!!

Fantastic rant, I love it! And you're absolutely right. I love how you underline the intent of the artist. Those who would seek to replace artists with machine learning and AI clearly don't understand what art is for. Replace stuff that people don't want to do, or can't do. But people get joy (and their livelihood) from creating art, and they want to do it. It's one of the things that make us human. I'm no Luddite, and I love using new tools to create my animation. But when it starts to encroach upon the fulfillment that I get from creating, then no thanks! You might argue that this is just interpolation and chill out. But my response to that is just wait, this is just getting started.

Cant be too hasty to objectify the perspective of the observer with the intention of the artist. It definitely seems tasteless in most applications but the Mulan animation actually looked pretty good. Might be different if I see it next to the original.

This guy is just mad that smart people are close to making parts of his job obsolete. Though the ai may be not to good at it now. It can and will get better with time. Dont plan to be doing that job in the future. If I were making the ai, all of this video is a critique on the current process and lessons to learn how to do it better.

Yeah the problem is this is not the right AI behing used. There will be AI developped specially for animation purposes, that will learn the cartoon principles and will probably become a tool for animators to interpolate between keyframes (AI scientists are working with artists to design such AI)

Artist are not perfect and thier intent is not alway best or even good, just watch the stuff the way you like it. Why rambling that one group of people sucks because you don't like how they watch the animation or things. 13:03 Not everyone care about the animator. 12:40 Pixar can't just render the animation with twice the fps, such animation takes time to render. It could take time upward of months at time and you want to double that. Also higher fps are better if you do it right, 24fps are not more than enough but bare minimum. The reason you do 24 or 30 fps is because it take time to create more frames and who would want to do double the work.

I assume this only applies to animations and not games? Games that are normally locked at 30 FPS almost always feel better when modded to be 60 or uncapped. For example, VVVVVV’s new 2.3 update that includes an Over 30 FPS mode.

I just grow so much hate to this kind of videos, and it's not like i know something about animating cartoon other than 6 years of video editing, i just know how much effort original creator put into making it and then some fucking moron came in with his ai enhancer to "improve it" in 2 clicks. these people need to be cut off the internet

I remember seeing the ai interpolation stuff awhile ago, and couldn't quite tell what it was that was off about it until now. (Cause not the most knowledgeable on these things) And As a Gamer...I find nothing wrong with this lol. It's funny cause I know quite a few who live by the "60 fps for life" mantra. I never got it myself why it was such a MUST HAVE thing. I can recognize how nice it looks sometimes but...never really dampened my game experience to have less or a stable 30, I guess the usual is? Either way, I definitely can see how it can be aggravating for animators

I always thought that the obsession with more clear pretty images and the need for higher graphics and the yatta yatta 4k yatta yatta 1080p was a disgusting symptom to replace actual quality of content. And as a GAMER I agree with this video. Not all of us are obsessed with HD renderings and call of duty. I to this day still prefer the original ps2 versions of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. One of my favorite "modern" games is Rime witch is heavily inspired by ico and has a simple slow asthetic similar to those early ps2 games.

A natural frame interpolator are bad monitors with ghosting effect. This effect was desired when playing old games in 24-30 FPS. It's a fault of today's monitors that 30 FPS looks so bad in gaming.

Reject misused automation. Return to manual. 11:11 I agree that automated animation is a tool that should be used properly. It shouldn't be slapped onto an animation--ones that people have clearly worked hard for--to make Satan's rendition of 80 FPS. I'm actually currently using the tweens in Adobe Animate as a temporary crutch until I further improve on my inbetween frame art, which might I just say I hope my animating technique evolves at a normal pace using the principals of animation. Also kinda curious about CACANi if you could maybe point towards that program. Maybe you could give a short tutorial on it? If not, that's okay.

I love high frame rates in fast-paced action games. Especially in a first-person game: if I have a 60-degree field-of-view, and I'm taking 1/4 of a second to spin 180 degrees, then at 30 fps, objects that my field of view swings over as I'm spinning will only be visible for like two frames, which doesn't bode well for situational awareness. There are also issues with input lag if you insist on triple-buffering. What I hate, however, is HDR (on the screen, nothing against the computational effect). Whether or not my computer screen blinds me should not be a matter of "artistic intent".
ravemastaj 8 horas atrás
It's sad that the opinions of authors don't matter, but that is just a fact of this day and age. Just ask Shakespeare. Once you have released your final work into the world, it will be re-interpreted ad nauseum for the rest of time (as this is a world that loves re-interpretations. That's just how it is. Nice animation though, I figured animation channels died nearly a decade ago. Kudos on sticking around.

Yeah, but you're comparing very artistic animation styles when algorithms like these can be mostly used to improve budget style animation, like anime series adapted from manga of wich, if you follow any, you'd see how they recycle loops and sometimes barely even draw the characters properly (see DBS, One Piece, and other long running shonens series); and you can tell it's not "a style" is just cutting corners.

A bit of fundamentals: ANY information processing leads to information loss. No exceptions, this is not about programming, this is about physics. Oversimplified explanation: 2nd law of thermodynamics + information is an inverted entropy. Entropy can't decrease, so information can't increase. Except rule for information is more strong than rule for entropy. If you want to dive deep in this you can check Norbert Wiener works (he is one of the founding fathers of computers and IT itself, so if he was completely wrong at this - you wont be able to read this text, because you use the computer for that)

AI can help if it accumulate a knowledge about a lot of similar tasks, like "Dear AI, watch over 9999 videos made by this exact animator only, now you can try to fill missing frames" - this might create something useful. But it won't increase FPS anyway )

I'll admit I struggled to see some of the differences in some of the animations. But.... 60FPS and 30FPS will NOT LOOK DIFFERENT IF THE, SAY, GAME IS DESIGNED FOR IT. You see, because of the before mention 24fps standard most monitors will lock into steps of 30 meaning sure it might look smoother, but when its not a game, a step up in fps will just ruin it. GAMERS. 60FPS MATTERS IN GAMES NOT ANIMATION. I dont undestand it. I cant tell the difference between 30 and 60 and I PLAY GAMES. THe only people who care are 120 fps gamers. fps doesnt matter with anything but games in terms of smoothness.

Gamer here, don't blame all of us for the frame rate fad. While I've watched things on TVs that were 60Hz, I can always say that animation quality looked bad on them, but live action didn't change much. I've also used a program 5-10 years ago that would force 60 FPS playback on whatever you watched on a PC, which -- again -- made animation look bad, but it did make Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Angel actions scenes look better. To break it down, higher frame rate during game play == smoother feeling input, while lower frame rates feel like we have input lag. However, when it comes to cut scenes, who gives a fuck, cause we aren't physically controlling what is going on; mind you QTEs fuck with that anytime they are involved :(

This just comes off as whiny and almost like a form of gatekeeping. Let people like what they like, they aren't "insulting" anyone. Just because you're an animator, it doesn't mean you get the ammunition to say it's "insulting" anyone. Making random shit 60 fps is just a weird, "what if" experiment thing, chill tf out, it's not hurting anyone.

I'm glad this wasn't just me being weird and disliking something. Whenever I saw these "enhancements" I always thought some things looked off where it felt like things were moving too fast but I didn't know how to properly explain it. Now that I saw this nice little explanation, I now know exactly what it was about them that I didn't like, so this video did a great job of explaining it all. As someone who played 90% of all the video games I've ever played with max 30 fps, usually less, I really don't understand the push for 60 fps for everything. The Into the Spiderverse example in this video actually made me cringe because of how weird it looked.

Thank you very much. I noticed those videos pop up couple of years ago, but thought nothing of them because of the low view counts. Now that they are so popular, I'm definitely irate about the whole thing. I think the worst case is the defenders claiming interpolation artifacts are the same thing as smear frames. They clearly understand the basics exist but willingly choose to ignore them.
spiderdude2099 12 horas atrás
This is unfortunately a choice many gamers have to make. A lot of new game comes with the caveat of “60 FPS” but lower resolution, vs higher resolution locked at 30fps. Many people choose the 60fps version no matter how much the quality may drop.

Food for thought: where is the line between someone’s interpretation of your work, or their re-imagination of it, and them undermining your artistic intent? Would someone taking an original animation and interpolating it to 60 FPS be ruining the art (assuming the properly credit the artist and maybe include a disclaimer, and assuming it’s within fair use)? And furthermore, why should someone not be able to ruin artistic intent if it is their own expression of it? Is it more morally wrong to “ruin” (again, this depends on your perspective) someone else’s artistic intent, or is it more morally wrong to prevent someone from interpreting that work and sharing it with others? Finally, as for your chef example, why is it wrong to enjoy a meal (or art) in the way you want to? As an artist, should you be prepared to see your work’a original intent changed or twisted?

I've seen a few interpolated animations of people dancing and doing movements that have to have timing down pa t or else it'll look weird. It just pains me to watch someone dancing with all of those frames that completely ruin it. I cannot imagine what people like about weird, messed up frames that take all feeling and momentum from an already perfect animation. I don't even think that if the ai WAS perfect, you'd be able to tell, so what's the point. It only hurts the animation. A good example of this is the video of Subaru and that duck dancing. The arms get split into three and the duck multiplies for half a second every few frames. I don't understand what these people see.

The turnover for support staff is HUGE. Most employees don't last more than a few months because of the overwhelming toxicity and inate bullshit that gets sent in with tickets. People burn out super fast. So when this is the case it's simply not reasonable to invest into heavy training for each employee. Like what's the point of spending months to fine tune an employee to be a great support specialist when they'll probably quit before the training is even finished. Waste of time and resources. So what is usually done is that the training period is super short and to compensate for the lack of expertise, the staff are OBLIGATED to use copy-paste answers. This keeps their error rate very low and also protects against toxicity and burn out to some degree as you're not forced to type out the exact same answers over and over again, as well as get into arguments with players. You'll just press two buttons for an answer and then get to ignore follow-up. So yeah, this is the necessary evil of working in Support. Here's a tip though: If you really want more advanced assistance ask whomever is handling your ticket to escalate it to their superiors. In many support departments they are OBLIGATED to do so when a customer asks it. Now there's no guarantee that their direct superior has particularly more to say on the topic, but they might. And you can keep asking to escalate the case higher and higher until you get to talk with someone really qualified that can give you a final answer which isn't up for appeal or question. But yeah. I worked for an international gaming company and while we only had like 1% of LoL's player pool, we had HUNDREDS of support staff. And we barely had time to train new people as most quit or were fired after a month. I imagine Riot has to employ THOUSANDS and it can't be easy to make sure such an insanely staffed department operates smoothly and accurately.

I do not see a problem here. When someone likes the interpolation then he will create it or watch it on the internet. It is not like that all animators are forced to use 60 FPS. No one will do that. Just let people enjoy what they like.

So here is something the video didn't touch on. More (quality) frames also means a whole lot more work for animators. So keeping FPS as low as possible while still having it look good has an economical aspect to it. If, through some magic, animators could pump out 60 or even more quality FPS with the same amount of effort required to draw 30 or 24, would they still go for lower frames?
