Poles, Slovaks, Czechs are the same peoples. I have been in all 3 countries and i didnt feelt any mental difference but when i meet Ukrainian, Belarus or Russian i can feel the east mental vibe from them which is close but at the same time diffrent and about Slavic brothers from Balkan I cant tell yet untill i will go to visit them soon! :D

This is a very strange and cool feeling. I never learned a word in Slovak, but being a native Polish speaker, I understand like 90% of what she's saying. Really shows how closely related our West Slavic languages are.

@ПYou интересно почему польский получился по ощущениям "сложнее, чем польский". хотя м.б. дело в случае "первой встречи" - моя сестра с первым столкнулась с чешским и "никак не может" напрячься на польский. А я сначала сделал польский и думал, что "ну а чешский за одно потом будет совсем легко", но оказалось - не тут-то было. Пришлось заниматься чешским - как абсолютно иностранным языком.

Jestem z Rumunii i nigdy nie miałem kontaktu z językami słowiańskimi. Teraz uczę się polskiego od 7 miesięcy, bo mam dziewczynę z Polski. Uczę się również słowackiego w szkole, ponieważ w moim mieście mieszka dużo osób ze Słowacji i dzięki temu zrozumiałem dużo z tego co ta pani mówiła. I'm from Slovakia, I love Poland, I often go on a vacation to Poland, learned some Polish by watching movies and listening to Polish songs, really helped me, I can easily talk to people in Poland using Slovak but when the word is completely different from the Polish one and I know the Polish version of it I usually mix Slovak and Polish and It works perfectly, absolutely unnecessary to use English in Poland

@Shion yeah same literally. I've been to Slovakia a few times born in Poland and I can mainly understand it. Like reading is more difficult then hearing it but it's understandable. There were polish and Slovak signs and it's true that no pole speaks English there 😁

When I went to Slovakia no Pole ever spoke English there everyone just used Polish :_: and Slovaks used Slovak too I remember reading some texts in Slovak and laughing how funny these words sounded

I'm an American with Polish and Slovak mother and father (respectively). My Polish is broken at best, but was able to pick words and phrases out. This is essentially immersion for me. I'm very proud of both countries of my ancestors.

I’m Russian and Slovak is extremely understandable! It sounds crystal clear to me, unlike Polish (peculiar pronunciation) But written Polish gets much easier to grasp. Recently I found out that Slovak can be understood up to 90%. (especially if you listen to it more attentively 2-3 times)

American 🇺🇸 here, my grandparents and parents speak Czech 🇨🇿 and they never taught us as kids. But I can figure out alot of the Polish words, very similar/same as Czech 🇨🇿 😁! I'm not a lost cause, lol, I can speak French, and going to add another language . Poland 🇵🇱 Slovakia 🇸🇰, Czechia 🇨🇿 💪❤️

Jestem Polakiem i z dużą łatwością rozumiem język słowacki mimo, że nigdy się go nie uczyłem. Z tego, co mówiła pani Paulina zrozumiałem prawie wszystko (98-99%). I'm Polish and I can easily understand the Slovak language even though I've never learned it. I understood almost everything Paulina said in Slovak (98-99%).

Slovak language is without doubt a key to all Slavic languages. All Slavs can understand Slovak quite well. Learn Slovak and all Slavic languages will become easier.

@Tyun Peters my mum is polish and she understands Russian, Slovak and Czech. It's pretty cool she also speaks polish fluently. I can understand Slovak quite a bit but that's it. Czech and Ukrainian are more difficult to understand even more so Russian.

I often see Russians not being able to understand Czech or Poles not understanding Russian, and so on. But the one that they all can understand the best seems to be Slovak. That's awesome.

Dziękuję bardzo za możliwość posłuchać różne jenzyki słowiańskie! Jestem białorusinem, ale dobrze znam język polski. W Słowacji byłem tylko jeden raz, w 1995 roku. Wtedy myslałem, że język słowacki jest bardzo podobny na język polski i na język białoruski. I tak, jest coś podobnego z jenzykem rossyjskim. Zaraz mnie było wszystko zrozumiało z jenzyku słowackego. I to mi bardzo się podobało!

I am Slovak from Bratislava, but my grandparents were Czechs living in Ostrava - close to Czech - Polish borders. I think that polish language was very good understandable for people from that region, they watched polish TV and spoke a dialect using a lot of polish words. As a child, I spent a lot of time at my grandaparents and thats why polish language is quite good understandable to me as well. I think, that crucial is to learn words which are completely different and words which are the same, but have different meaning.

Pozdravljeni iz severno-vzhodne Slovenije (Slovenia). Ne znam slovaško, vendar sem z lahkoto uganil vseh pet besed v slovaščini. Znam srednje hrvaško/srbsko in malo rusko ter poljsko, kar mi je pomagalo. //Gretings from north-eastern Slovenia. I don't know Slovakian but I've guessed easily all five words in Slovakian. I know medium Croatian/Serbian and a little Russian and Polish which helped me. SLOVENIAN - ENGLISH 1. potapljač - diver potapljačica - diver woman 2. bolnica - hospital p.s. bolnica - hospital also in Croatian/Serbian das Spital is also a german Austrian for hospital (I studied some German) 3. pekel - hell 4. skiro - scooter 5. krilo - skirt p.s. suknja - also Croatian for skirt Bilo je zelo zanimivo in zabavno //It was very interesting and funny. Interesting, my Slovak flatmate and I (a Pole) spoke english exclusively to one another back when I was living in Denmark. We attempted speaking our native langs, but there were so many misunderstandings/mishearings that we figured it's too tiresome.

Same here. I live in UK. I play football with Slovakian and also Czech friends once a week and we always speak our own languages. And we understand each other. Very rarely, rather spontaneously we use English.

Hi I'm a hungarian, and I absolutely love the channel, and how it reveals common words in hungarian with the slavaian languages, and just wanted to mention that the word Pieklo is Pokol in hungarian. And I really like the way Norbert compares words to hungarian in a lot of his videos. Another one Sukna in slovakian would be szoknya in hungarian :) Lots of common words with rusyn. Legend

I feel like Slovak is a perfectly balanced Ligua Franca for Slavic Languages. Nearly all Slavic Nations can understand Slovak quite well. Perhaps it's also because Slovakia is right in the middle among Slavic Nations. We should learn Slovak as second language in every Slavic country, hej! :)

@colin afobe After listening to this interview, it is pretty self-evident that Slovak and Croatian/Serbian are two most closely related of all Slavic languages. Which is interesting because it makes Croatian/Serbian very close to ancient proto-Slavic language, and I don't think many people realize this.

@Александр Черных What's needed are books for learning Interslavic ( i don't like their website), this language is good for a better, mutual comprehension and business wise between slaves, although for tourist (a language to be understood across slavic countries). I'm french we have two similar constructed languages for the romance language group : Elefen and Interlingua. I was blown away though i know nothing about them i understood everything at first glance and hearing.

I am a native English speaker just starting Polish lessons and was surprised that I understood more of the Slovak than the Polish! There was something about the Slovak consonants and the spacing between words that made it sound more "American" and helped me to pick out words easier.

As a Ukrainian, understood about 95%, but that's mostly because Paulina was speaking as clear and slow as it necessary for foreigners. When Slovaks have their ordinar rapid conversation, I barely understand about a half.

Native Bulgarian here, who also speaks some Russian. Slovak honestly is not very hard when spoken slow - I understand many of the words and grasp the context. I'm actually surprised how many of the Slovak words are the same as their Bulgarian equivalents. And as a bonus it sounds nice. It sounded like a very heavy dialect and I had a lot of trouble at word number 4, the other were almost easy. And by the way, Sukno is an old word for clothing material which almost no Bulgarian uses anymore :D Polish is a different animal though, I really need to put my mind and think and compare words with synonums in order to grasp something. Still, due to reading the subtitles, I grasped more of it than I expected and with some exposure I'm sure it will become easy.

I like how Slovak is so intelligible for all of its Slavic neighbours. I have even seen Russian and Ukrainian comments here saying they understand Slovak surprisingly good. And ślub is such a nice word for a wedding. It makes sense cause you kind of make a promise to each other. Pěkné video :)

And btw i grasped surprisingly much from what Paulina was saying and it seems like the slow pace and distinct pronunciation is really one of the key factors in this.Notable aspect:)Also both russian and polish helped here and there,as some slovak words were cognate with one language or the other.Have to stress that the manner in which she said "su tam CERTI!" with that emotion on her face and in her voice haha,oh that was impressive and somewhat fascinating!:))

I had a Czech friend in England. Jurij. Jurij worked in DHL warehouse for a couple of years surrounded by other Polish workers. They never spoke English, Jurij asked them to speak Polish to him because he could understand majority of it and would reply back in Polish-Czech mix. After a year, Jurij was a fluent Polish speaker. I was amazed by how well he could speak.

I am from Czech Republic (Moravia) and of course Slovak is like my second native tongue, but now I can say that Polish is very close too. It has different accent and sounds a bit like rustling paper, but words are very very similar and generally I haven't problems to understand. Greetings to Slovaks, Poles and Czechs! I would like to watch czech-polish-slovak conversation, it would be very interesting.

@Jan Niedan not that weird.. Czechs and Slovaks understand eachother cause we were one country almost 30 years ago.. It's normal to watch Slovak tv stations here in cz, we also have a lot of tv shows together. We never learn slovak, just naturally understand it and same goes for Slovaks I guess

Im Polish and i can understand 80-90% of Slovak, and maybe 50% Czech. Its weird, cause for Slovak people Czech language is so easy to understand. For Poles - not really. Dziwne, że Czeski i Słowacki są niby tak podobne do siebie (przynajmniej dla nich), a mimo to zrozumieć Czecha jest nieporównywalnie ciężej niż Słowaka.

Nedávno ma zaujalo že Slovensko má 5 a pol miliona ludí, česko 10 - 11 milionov ludí dlhšiu dobu... Keď si pozriete rozlohu štátov tak Holandsko má menšu rozlohu štátu o 8 tisíc kilometrov než Slovensko ale obyvatelov majú tri krát viac 17 milionov... Možno je to tým že vyrúbali lesy kôli pestovanu tulipanov alebo maju menj hôr. ...Podobne Taliansko má 60 milionov ludí na 300 tisíc kilometrov. Dánsko má asi tolko kilometrov čo Holandsko a tiež majú 5,8 miliona obyvytelov.

I am Polish and I have been working with a Slovak for a while in Ireland. We both talked in our languages and understood each other without any problems. Sometimes it was funny when, for example, we asked ourselves how old we are: Poles say "lata" and Slovaks say "roki". In our language, "rok" means 1 year, but the next year is "2 lata".
