The 1992 European / South American Cup, also known as the Toyota Cup and Intercontinental Cup, was the 13th edition of the Intercontinental Cup (after UEFA and CONMEBOL hit Toyota carmaker in Japan in a single match, with in order to develop and publish football in the country, the match was now organized by the Japan Football Association and Toyota under the supervision of UEFA and CONMEBOL), played on December 13, 1992. The final was held at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, Japan, between South American Champion Sao Paulo and European Champion Barcelona.
Sao Paulo were world champions for the first time after beating Barcelona 2-1 with two goals from Raí, voted best player of the competition. Barcelona had opened the scoring with a goal from Stoichkov.
From the 1980s, when the Intercontinental Cup (European / South American Cup) became the Toyota Cup (European / South American Toyota Cup), UEFA forced European clubs to sign a contract before entering the World Cup. of the European Champions, according to which they would be forced to play the Toyota Cup (even if they did not want to) by winning the European Cup, and if they did not play the Toyota Cup, they would face heavy penalties for breach of contract. These facts weighed on Barcelona's decision to play the 1992 Toyota Cup against Sao Paulo, and the Spanish club even considered not competing that year.
São Paulo unifies on its website tab titles the achievements of the Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup under the same heading, "Mundial Interclubes". The Paulista tricolor also features texts reminiscent of winning the 1992 Intercontinental Cup, becoming the 1992 World Champion. On 27 October 2017, following a meeting held in India, the FIFA Council recognized the Intercontinental Cup winners as world champions.
