@Mike Rew Well, it's called "science FICTION", right? Never said SF has to be strictly based on science 'facts', simply that authors usually follow stricter guidelines than comic book writers & illustrators, which should be pretty obvious. When writing the novelisation for Fantastic Voyage, Isaac Asimov was concerned with the fact that if humans were reduced to the microscopic size required for the story, the atoms themselves would be visible in their bodies! That's the kind of scientific detail that would hardly concern the comic book crowd, but did torment the science writer Asimov. As for Clarke's obelisk, I guess he would chalk it down to what he meant by "alien technology being akin to magic" for less developed societies and just roll with that. And here was an author who usually tried to explain EVERYTHING, like he did with his 2001:A Space Odyssey novel. Having his Starchild "blow up orbital nuclear platforms" at the end just shows how little he really understood of Kubrick's vision ... I guess we each have our particular tastes when it comes to movies, SF or otherwise , so arguing which ones are best is fruitless. I have seen most of the movies on your list, though, but not all; Europa Report was the one I liked most, but that's because I'm a Space Travel kind of guy) Fact is, I think the last time I was excited about a SF production was with the first 3 seasons of The Expanse. Some SF tropes have been milked to exhaustion, imo; time travel conundrums, rebellious robots, mutants, The Apocalypse, etc. Unless it's a VERY original take, just not interested. And with all the politics cr*ap muddying the waters these days, I don't even bother. Really love Enki Bilal's work! He is, after all, part of the Humanoïdes group. I did get to see at least part of the Nikopol Trilogy, and I agree that it was pretty underwhelming stuff. Some things just don't translate very well from paper to the screen. Pity.

Where was that "science"? Was it just a McGuffin? Not everything has to be explained. I realize there are some poor examples of Sci-Fi movies out there, and the (I'll say it again) Sci-fi based Marvel movies are certainly not the worst of the crop. I agree that most of their films (and "graphic novels") are not SF, but very certainly, some are. I am a huge science fiction movie fan, and if you would like to check out what *_I_* consider to be the best _recentish_ exceptional examples, please do. I doubt you've seen all of these, but they are all very thought-provoking, and might give perspective of where I'm coming from in regards to "defining" a genre. Primer 2004 Predestination 2015 (based on Heinlein's short story "All You Zombies") Spring 2015 (Benson & Moorhead) The Endless 2018 (Benson & Moorhead) Snowpeircer 2014 (based on French graphic novel) Ex Machina 2015 Coherance 2014 Europa Report 2013 (only "space" movie here) Mr. Nobody 2013 Frequencies 2014 Antimatter 2017 (aka "Wormholes") I would also include the more mainstream "Blade Runner 2049" (far deeper than you might think, and better than the original) and "Arrival", both from Denis Villeneuve. I can't say I'm charged about the Dune remake though. Do all of these fall within your strict "Sci-Fi" rules? Probably not, but like I said: "It's a big umbrella." I always believed sci-fi required having an open mind. And, after your take on Fifth Element, note that some of the visuals were taken from the french graphic novel "Nikopol Trilogy" by Enki Bilal. He later self-funded a film based on one volume called "Immortal". Extremely hard to find, but there's a crappy transfer on BRvid. It's interesting thematically, but not up to the list above.

​@Mike Rew I think you misunderstood what I meant by "serious": I was definitely NOT talking about humor! There are some great examples of humorous SF, from Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat series to Douglas Adam's hilarious Hitchiker's Guide books(alas, made into a mediocre movie...) By 'serious' I simply meant that SF authors (usually) have a more grounded approach to science than what's required of comic book writers. In an SF novel, you just can't have your hero exposed to gamma rays and magically turn into a green monster; the author would have to struggle to find a way to explain how his hero didn't get radiation sickness, for ex. As for comics, if Stan Lee had to ground each of his hero origins in hard science, well, let's just say they'd fail miserably as entertainment... That's why I agreed with Julia's objections. BTW, most of what we consider SciFi movies are, at best, pretty poor examples of the genre, mostly, I believe, because they are written by people who know very little about science and science fiction. Star Trek, TOS, is an exception, imo; it had great writers, including Harlan Ellison, who wrote perhaps the best episode of the series, City on The Edge of Forever(which he rejected, as he usually did...Harlan was kind of the Alan Moore of the 60's I guess) Blade Runner is a visually exceptional film, but otherwise pretty basic science fiction; typical Ridley Scott stuff. Besides, Ridley didn't even bother to read PKDs book. I love Fifth Element! But that movie was the embodiment of the outstanding work done by the Metal Hurlant group, made up of some of the most creative and original graphic artists of the late 20th century, like Moebius, guys who had a deep knowledge of SF, very well read but not authors themselves. So, science fiction-ISH, I suppose. Wall-E? Cute! Now, "light on reading Clarke's work"?!? Me?!? You really don't know what you're talking about. Of the so-called "4 greats", Clarke was my absolute favorite. Read all his classic stuff, some of it several times. But I'm really having a hard time remembering something "outright farcical" by him... Humor wasn't his strong point: he told terrible, cringeworthy jokes, as can be seen in some of his surviving interviews.

@Psychonaut 59 If your handle is any indication of your age, then it would put you 2 years older than I...so let's not make this a "these days" thing. I read 2001 in 1973, when I was 12 years old. By 16 I had read most major works by Bradbury, Heinlein, Blish & Azimov, and everything by Clarke. This formed a foundation to be able to make the statement I did. If you don't agree with it, it doesn't mean I'm wrong, it just means you don't see things in as wide a scope. And *If* you read all that you purport to, then you must have been light on reading Clarke's work, because there was plenty of "less than serious" stories to be had, and some outright farcical. I also read my fair share of comic books, and while there was a distinction, the realms certainly overlapped. The fact is that this *isn't* a "serious SF reader/author's Science Fiction listing". It's a title of a disposable BRvid clip. There is a broad spectrum of movies that leach into the Sci-fi realm that would not be considered "serious" sci-fi, but are still considered a part of the wider spectrum. Star Trek movies are considered sci-fi. So is Primer. Two opposite ends of the genre, but neither suffers as a result of falling under the same category. Would you consider Blade Runner to be sci-fi? Why, because it is serious? Would you deem say, The Fifth Element as *not* sci-fi because it is not "serious"? How about WALL-E? Lighten up chief, it's a big universe...and again, there's room for quite a lot.

Suppose if its set in the future with a superhero it's classed as Scimarv ? I agree though Science fiction is a form of fiction that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals. So if the superhero is made from a science project gone wrong or like spiderman would that count ?

That IS the Series coming-back. That is Season 2. And I cannot say that it was “Great” given the terrible flaws and mutilation of basic concepts of Physics and Asimov (such as the Robots, the “Star Bridge” - Why, with Anti-Grav everywhere, AND with it being necessary for the existence of a “Space Elevator” of that type, did it not have something that INSTANTANEOUSLY sealed the area that was “blown-up” and then everything else continues to “Float” where it is. There are MANY detailed Science papers about this - and the Foundation itself, not to mention the “Spacers” were extinct, save on ONE WORLD by the time of “Foundation”). It IS a fairly good “imitation” of Asimov’s Foundation that IS NOT The Foundation Series. I think “Plagiarized” is a good description of what it is. It is a decent Plagiarized copy… It has some interesting concepts. But the number of seriously flawed Physics Mistakes in it makes it hard to watch (such as the amount of “Sublight” travel over distances of over 50,000ly that occur in a matter of years, just as one such horrendous flaw in the Physics. The Time Dilation at the distance they were to a Black Hole should have meant that the entire “10,000 year interregnum” would have passed by the time the girl got out of it (who was a moody guy in the book). But you will get your second and third seasons of it, and possibly a fourth, fifth, and sixth if we include the Bear, Bedford, and Brin conclusions (that will be mutilated as well, given what has happened already).
