Being autistic myself, it's nice to see Illy express herself in a way that she's comfortable with. Also, I can relate to a lot of what she says, especially the whole "trying only one thing and crying when it doesn't work" thing. Not that I'm a theatre student, but that mentality can be applied to a lot of other things for us as well. Keep your options open and your head high, everyone!

I only applied to one job at the time, because I was afraid that if they all said yes, I would have to reject some of them. And I was afraid that would waste their time or hurt their feelings. I had a hard time finding a job partially because of that. I am autistic too.

I admire that you were brave enough to expose your less proud moments when you were younger. It's already scary to put your personal stories on a public platform, but it's even harder to show your less proud moments on top of it. It also shows that you learned and matured like anyone else when you acknowledge past mistakes. Feel proud you did what plenty never had the courage to do.
I have problems and issues
Very well said!! You’re right, a lot of people never reflect on the things they did when they were younger.

Growing up as a shy, autistic kid, I didn't feel comfortable being around people I didn't personally know, and was always worried about saying the wrong things without even knowing it. I only had a small group of friends, but I generally felt more comfortable being by myself. However, I always found comradery in the theatre department at school. I was passionate (still am) about the arts, and being around people with similar interests as me felt like I was part of the island of misfit toys; people who just "get" you without even trying. Being part of theatre taught me how to communicate with others, and to express myself in a creative manner. I only had supporting roles in high school, but I felt comfortable playing a character onstage. It felt like routine, I learned how to live as another person, and gained a sense of empathy for the said person I was portraying. It was basically psychology put into action. Now I'm part of my local community theatre, and I get to meet different people with different backgrounds. I've come a long way, but I'm still willing to push myself to learn more.

we didn't have waffle house growing up in tiny town Maine but sorta basically that opening night was mcdonalds down the street because it'd be a thursday and still school the next day and all. friday night had traditions. 200 year old school that had a bell tower over the same building as the theater, sports teams would pull the rope to ring it when they won home games, and that was the only time it was ever pulled. But the guys would all shimmy up a drain pipe and get the 3+ stories up and the seniors would ring the bell while the director pretended he had no idea what was going on. The girls would go streaking (or as naked as you felt comfortable being) on the beach outside the nunnery and do a prayer to the moon goddess, extra fun for the fall show, because that would always be early december in southern Maine, so in the snow. and then to someone's house for chill cast party and food. Saturday was closing show for straight plays, and either way we had a meal somewhere nicer (and by that I mean basically like a tgi fridays price range), and then to someone's house for a more wild cast party musicals in the spring we would have matinees on sunday, and after we'd end up at the beach and/or someone's house after stopping by ihop or similar first

I love the fact that you're open about some of the crappy things you said when you were younger because I always feel really ashamed of myself for the way I acted but hearing another person talk about what they did I realized that we're all just people who are doing the best we can and sometimes we mess up

I once did Annie, I feel like the entire team was teenagers forced to do it because of so many reasons 1. A girl who was too young to do the second part of the audition (they gave the kids under 8 or something background roles for the most part) got Molly, a speaking/supporting/role with a name role 2. There weren’t real auditions, it wasn’t like “oh, you failed the first level and didn’t get to go on” the auditions were literally “let’s go in a circle and read the script” and it was so awkward I don’t think most musical auditions are like that but that definitely made me not wanna do it again, it was the most awkward thing I’ve done and I’m not even exaggerating.

Ok so i recently came across your videos from my daughter (age 10) watching you. You and me have so much in common. From the female bully i had in highschool, to all the symptoms of autism. My therapist says i have it. So its not just me making it up. It is nice to know someone exists out there, outside my bubble that went through what i have. I have sensory issues also, (yellow kitchen gloves in drawer). I can't stand loud noises they startles me. And i always blame myself for everything that goes wrong. I like just sitting alone by myself playing video games. Also i loved nintendogs. ☺️ My therapist said that I have Asperger's syndrome. Also i use to be in drama class, but the preps bullied me and i quit. We were doing the play called. a midsummer's nights dream. I was going to be a blue Fairy. I was rehearsing my lines and a teacher told us you know just make up something and so I was making up a line and then the drama teacher got mad saying that I need to follow the script even though she told us that we can make up our own lines. Well after that I went to the girls bathroom at school and those preppy girls were in the bathroom and they saw me walk by and when I went to the bathroom one preppy girl made a smart remark repeating the lines that I said in rehearsal, and they all started giggling and laughing and I was in the bathroom stall and was about ready to cry. so after that I quit and I never did drama again. The drama teacher kept begging me to come back because she was like you know we already got your costume and stuff and I kept telling her that I couldn't do it. because I didn't want to deal with bullying, cuz I know at my school the preps always got treated better than the outcasts like me.

The queerification of illy's channel is something I am so living for omg. "so much gender" was 10/10. Also, I'm in high school now and I've done tech for a few shows. There's something so heartwarming about the way our chaotic energy brings us together. I love going out for ice cream or whatever afterwards. We hit up coldstone after our most recent play like 10 minutes before closing and just chilled outside eating our ice cream and vibing.

I was in Legally Blonde The Musical freshman year. It was AWESOME! I played a member in the dance ensemble for What You Want Pt 2 and I was also Chutney Wyndam. Even though I feel that I could've done better as Chutney, nevertheless it was still a GREAT show! I met so many new, fun people and the girl who played Paulette was BORN for that role. She did a fantastic New York accent, she made everyone laugh, and her singing voice was incredible (she hit those high notes like a champ!) Plus she was very nice! If any of you ever get the chance to audition for this show, DO IT even if you just want to be in the tech crew. I promise you, you won't regret it!

In theater, I was cold reading a scene where my theater teacher (who everyone fears but loves) was playing my mother in front of the entire class. She told me to sit down so I sat in a pretzel on the floor instead of in the chair right next to me. She just looked down at me and didn't say anything. Everyone burst into laughter (including me). It was one of my proudest moments.
First Name Last Name
I knew a girl so scared that I was constantly in fear of accidentally taking advantage of her and yet she told me she was one of the people that set up the room for the dances at highschool.

Ayo, my high school actually did a production of Legally Blonde last year, and I also ended up trying out for Paulette! Didn't get the role cuz I missed a bunch of cues during auditions (it was my first production) but I ended up getting a minor role, and the whole thing was a lot of fun! We also got two real dogs for the show

I enjoy the Drama for middle school, but when my high school came around, I wanted to try to give it a good acting for my whole four year. I didn’t last and I lost interest since my freshman Year introduction was terrible I only did once, I wanted to do crew but nope didn’t try, because everyone in theater spread rumors about me. So I didn’t do any Drama for Sophomore and Junior Year, but when Senior year came, I wanted to give my last year big, so 9 to 5 they kept it family friendly. I wanted to play a small role only I didn’t. Because I made a biggest fool of myself and my class and teacher and I spent the rest of my second semester sad and depressed not going into the practice or dance.

Ya, I feel that. I did theater in middle school. I remember trying out in my 8th grade year. We were doing Alice in Wonderland Jr. They didn't have us audition for specific parts, they just had us audition in general, and decide what part fit who best. If you got call back, you got a big role. Anyway, I practiced for days my monolog, and then came the singing part. I wasn't in the drama club, so I never heard we were meant to sing Zippity Do Da, so I just thought we were meant to come up with a song to sing. But audition came around, I gave my best go, then the teacher turns on the beginning of the song, being blind sighted, I froze. And just stood there, not doing anything until the teacher asked me what happened, and I said I didn't know the song. Dumb thing was, I sung that song before it. I knew it by heart. I was just blind-sighted, and froze. I could probably still sing that song today. Until a few years ago, I imagined myself doing the audition right, singing the song. Nailing the part of the caterpillar. But then realized, I was a shy kid, overly shy. It was hard to cover up. There was no way I was gonna get a good part. I ended up as a seagull and something else. Background characters. Though, looking back now, I realize how crappy my friend was. I had this friend in middle school through high school that I thought the world of. I did this play because they did it. My friend knew about the song, and never mentioned anything to me. I think I even talked to them about what song to sing, and they never brought it up. I was man after the audition, but now looking back, I wonder if my friend did this on purpose. It was one of those friendships the relied heavily on them being in the spotlight, and me worshiping them. Made clear when I started getting better at things then them, they were never sportive and kinda dropped off when I stopped cow-toeing to their opinions.

Hi, I'm gonna join theatre next year, and I have some questions. Could someone play a role with the opposite gender, even when their gender is relevant to the plot? How do you overcome stage fright? 2:20 an extremely important thing to learn in theatre is to be able to handle rejection. I know a number of theatre kids(and adults!) who audition for things for the simple experience in auditioning, with no expectation of getting cast. It’s very scary but more often than not, directors are not big and mean, they are just thinking for the right people, and if you give it your best, you may just get cast. And hey! If nothing else, you get experience points.

I'll have to admit, even I was a huge cry baby when I didn't get the part I wanted, we were doing Mamma Mia with another school which I though was cool because new friends but for some reason, everybody else was thinking it would be a nightmare and hated it because it was someone else. (we all got sad after the last show was done) but my only fear was a less likely chance of getting a part I wanted, like one of the possible fathers in the story. so at the auditions, we had to choose out of two boy songs, or out of two girl songs and there were a lot of girls auditioning so we had to listen to "Honey Honey" on repeat that I was even singing it out the door, I believe I sang "Our last summer" and I thought I did well enough to get a part until we had to do "Don't go wasting" with a partner... and I blew it, then the acting parts came up, I was the first one to go and I was sight reading the script and... blew it (I am not a good sight reader) so in a couple of days we got the casting list and... I was in it but not Bill, Harry or Sam, no no no I was the Priest that shows up right at the end to mar... (tries to) marry them, my friend approached me the next day (he played Sam) he said, "hay great job on the part man" but I was thinking "why do I always get the boring characters?" and told him he got a better part than me and he said, "oh yeah, I think you deserve better, that's not fair) but in the end I saw how much work and effort they put in the main characters and I feel like they made the right choice and I was happy with the new friends I made with the other school.

Honestly, this video is super relatable. I’m no theatre kid, but I am a band kid, and not comparing myself to my classmates is really hard. It’s super easy it get caught up in a spiral of thinking I’m not good enough just because I didn’t get first chair trumpet, and even easier to form a one-sided rivalry with the guy (THATS IN MY SAME GRADE, AND I KNOW IM JUST AS GOOD AS HIM) that always gets first chair... yeah its really hard loll. It’s a very hard lesson to learn that you should stop comparing your skills to other people, and stop seeing yourself as lesser just because you didn’t get the “most important part”. It’s a lesson many people are still learning, including me. Thanks for this Illy ❤️

I relate to this so much! In 8th grade our drama class did Grease. It was literally my favorite movie and I desperately wanted to be Frenchy. I practiced the lines for a week and felt so good about it then chickened out right before the auditions. Because the whole class had to participate I ended up being one of the backup dancers. A side note, I was picked on terribly in middle school because I was one of the only red heads and my name is Brandy. This was the late 90's when the singer Brandy was really big so everyone called me White Moesha or Ugly Moesha (for those too young, the singer starred in a TV show called Moesha) or asked me if I wanted to "Go" down (again for the youngins, she had a song called "I wanna be down") . So, back to the play, during the Greased Lightening number we had to dance down the sides of the audience and at least 4 of the boys who tormented me tried to trip me as I went passed. So, not only was I nervous to put myself out there, perform, remember my dance moves, but I had to actively watch my feet to avoid this POS boys.

When i was in highschool every year we got the official licenses to broadway musicals so we could perform them. sometimes we'd perform it on a big stage and sometimes a small stage. One year we changed to a new teacher and she made us perform a children's version of a well-known musical. the children's version removed many of the most important character development songs. and when choosing that musical the new teacher also didn't think about the fact we had 3 boys in the class and a majority of the roles needed to be cast were male. the female lead even suggested we make it a genderbent version since we obviously could not fill the male roles. but yea whole musical went downhill.

I am about 10.48 min in and this animation is reminding me of all the times I decided to do something I was Extremely scared of/ anxious about but decided to do anyway because I wanted at least the experience of doing it. And even though I might have felt embarrassed at the time in some of those "adventures", I now (like 42 years in on being alive) actually regret very few of those things. Because whatever the outcome, at least I did try and that is smth no one can take away from me. And it is also true that some of the things that embarrass us the most, we eventually see differently. Because so what is Illy sat on the floor and used the chair to say her lines to? That shows living in the moment, inventiveness and creativity, all thing that are Def wanted on stage! My youngling ones, heed some advise from a girl of 42,and give yourselves some slack - and try something you've always wanted to do, you'll be happy you did!!

The closest I ever came to theater was during assignments for my English class. In middle school we were forced to do a scene from "Alice in Wonderland," and because I was blonde, blue eyed, and small, I was automatically cast as Alice...TT^TT I bemoaned having to learn my lines (and oh so MANY lines to remember).

Just be glad your “sitting on the floor” moment didn’t happen on stage in front of an audience. I was an extra in my high school’s production of Legally Blonde, and just before the song Blood in the Water, a few of the main characters as well as some extras were supposed to take seats in the classroom scene. By the time I got onto the stage, all the seats not reserved for the main characters were taken. For some reason, I didn’t think to just quietly walk off stage, so instead I chose to sit on the floor next to where everyone else was sitting. I decided not to come back out on stage for the rest of that night’s show.

A looooong time ago, my school (keep in mind I was in elementary at the time and the school was k-8th) dabbled in some theatre. I did some plays, collected some scripts, the whole shebang. But, in a year long before my time, my school had done Hair Spray, and in the girl's dressing room there was this huge can with a hole in the back, just like yours. I never got to know how the can was constructed, but I imagine it was magnificent. God, I wish I could set foot in that smelly dressing room again.

I wish i had stuck with my theater class in high school. I really enjoyed the first few months of it, sitting on our little stage, reading parts, acting. Then it turned into shop class. We had a major project that was going to count for the majority of our grade and the project was to build a stage. And i mean we had to build a stage. No shoebox with a hole cut in it and a washcloth curtain, we studied construction, wood cutting, i know how to make a miter joint because of a theater class! And I told my teacher that I couldn't do the project because we had no tools in my house. She suggested that I just go ask my dad if I can use his saw and lumber. The saw and lumber we did not have nor could afford because we lived below the poverty line. Oh just ask your grandparents. One lives in Louisiana and the others live over 400 miles away. Basically i had no way to do the project because no one around me was a woodworker, not even for just goofing off. And i couldn't go ask the woodshop class because i would have to do it after school and miss catching my bus home. And if i miss the bus home I'm really screwed cause we didn't have a phone at home. This was before the advent of cellphones and everyone carried a communications device on them at all times of every single day. Back then if you didn't have a phone it wasn't the end of the world either. But yeah i spoke to the school counselors and my teacher and changed classes, having to explain to them that I took a theater class to learn how to theatrically act and that if i wanted to learn how to build a stage i would have taken shop instead and that i didn't need to know how a stage is built and works to act on it. How would you react if you took home ec and they made you dissect a human digestive system because if you're going to cook food you need to know how food gets eaten.

I remember on our school's opening night of Beauty and the Beast, Belle was showing the cast photos of the seniors and juniors when they were freshman, and at one point she pulled out one and said, "Guess who this one is?" And me, being the airheaded, amateur freshman, said, "Oh, that's you!" It was a senior guy who now has a mustache.

Ironically, my favourite show I was in was about death. I believe it was called: Bad People or Bad Weekend and it was written by two students and our prof. I played a cheerleader who dies in scene one (a Friday) and I am unhappy that nobody found my body by Sunday. Throughout the show I exacted revenge by tricking people with their insecurities to kill others. By the end of the show, everyone is a ghost and they all realize that something influenced them. I quite literally pop out from behind a bush and scream: We’re all trapped in hell! You’re welcome!!!! Then I’m fairly certain the show ends with a song from the original beetlejuice movie. It’s a bonkers show and I don’t know how it got approved by my Catholic School Board. But it did and we did five shows and to this day it was a blast to do. I loved getting to be wacky, serious, and ultimately play a bad guy. But I will admit with hindsight that I have a few questions for our school theatre director. 🤣

In elementary school from 2nd grade, I tried out for many roles in plays and musicals. However, I never managed to break past getting a minor role, stuck in the chorus, with like, 3 lines. However, I always persisted, and continued to try out. It took quite a while, and I always kept the sort of optimism that I would land a meaningful role in a play. Even when I had to leave for a family emergency and couldn't act in that play, I always memorized lines, practiced and repeated. But one day, I managed to land the main role. This isn't supposed to be extremely cheesy, but I just wanted to share my personal experience. I was very lucky to get that role, and it was pretty satifsying after years of minor roles.

hrrrrng this brought back memories. I loved doing musicals at school. I think I always just joined the chorus for a few years, then maybe when I was 15/16 I decided to audition for a role. I don't think we auditioned for specific roles, and as far as I remember this audition was only singing. I thought the audition went well - the drama teacher doing the audition had this look of utter disbelief when I started singing (I was a very quiet kid, but absolutely adored singing and I like to think I can hold a tune!). Then when the cast list came out, I'd been cast in a small duet role with my then 'best friend' - which actually upset me; she was quite an overbearing personality, talking for/over me a lot, and I was trying to establish some independence but we were practically inseparable in the eyes of the rest of the school. I fumed silently for a bit but was ultimately happy I had a role in addition to chorus.

I tried to do theater in sophomore year, but I ended up breaking my arm and had to give up my role that year. I tried again next year but ended up breaking my spine in three places. Once again, had to quit. In senior year I didn't even try. Not because I was scared I'd have to quit again, but because I was still in a wheelchair from the junior year incident

The same kind of thing would happen to me in middle school, I never got the leads, and eventually stopped trying for them after too much heartbreak. But they let me make the tiaras and gowns lol. The I got my first lead in my last show there, and then two weeks into rehearsals they told me they were going to go a different way and all of a sudden I was just a partygoer 🥲
