Hi Justin. I would love to get the 28" model as I prefer a compact setup as I often hike in in thick brush. I have a 28.5" draw lenght. However, I am concerned about the steep string angle that I would get with my draw lenght and the 28" ata. Any recommendations?

@Bowhunting.com thanks buddy, appreciate it.

Having owned and shot both the Triax and now the VXR, I wouldn't be worried about it. The string angle isn't bad at all. Everyone we've talked to that's been worried about it immediately realizes it's not a concern as soon as they pick one up and shoot it.

@Bowhunting.com seriously, get over 500 grains. It's worth it. "Put a hole in a animal will kill it, but put a hole through a animal and you'll find it." CDP author

That bow was insanely quiet, and was steady. I don’t think I saw any shock or movement. I love my Halon, but this VXR looks great. - miss the lost camo

I have a 2006 Hoyt Turbo Tec...I shoot 460 gr. arrows (including heads), with a 29" draw and set at 69#'s at 275 fps...That 278 fps you're shooting is anemic just like the brand new Hoyt Carbon Fiber RWX-3 Turbo shot practically the same grain arrow (I believe it was 457 gr.) with a 29" draw and set at 70#'s at 285 fps...I'll stick with my Hoyt which I bought brand new at $400 thank you...When a $1K- 1.5K bow starts shooting in the 330 fps range, then I'll spend the money...What a waste of money ALL these new bow's are...Sad...Smh...

I feel like the bow market has turned into the golf market. Club makers claim 10 yards further every year. By now I should be driving par 5s. Same holds true for bows. Physics can only be pushed so far before you are just left with either quieter or deader in hand. All others options are just leather vs cloth interior.

After 12 years, I upgraded from a Hoyt Katera to a Mathew Vertix. Also switched to a HHA5519 single pin. My accuracy improved significantly. I wondered what would be on the horizon but I don't see enough to peak my interest. Gonna slap a custom string on the Vertix and continue using what I'm confident with.

Looked this up so everyone will know A.M.O. Under this standard the bow being tested will have a maximum pull weight of 60lbs. The arrow will have a grain weight of 540(9 grains of arrow weight per pound of bow weight). The draw length will be set at 30 inches. The chronograph used for measuring the speed will be placed at point blank range for testing. I.B.O. Under this standard the bow being tested will have a maximum pull weight of 70lbs. The arrow will have a grain weight of 350(5 grains of arrow weight per pound of bow weight). The draw length will be set at 30 inches. The chronograph used for measuring the speed will be placed at point blank range for testing.

Mike Ford That is ATA speed. Different standard of measurement than IBO. Not sure what standard Mathews uses.
Mike Ford

Depends on draw weight, but most importantly arrow weight. Each grain of weight will drop the speed. General consensus is 5grns of arrow weight per Foot per second.

Nickolas Solis

@Justin Zarr seems a little below IBO to me. Only 306fps with a 360 grain. Do you think the 10 grains and 1inch of draw length could make that much difference?
Justin Zarr

For our tests we used 29" draw and 70 lbs. For IBO speed ratings they use 30" draw, 70 lbs and 350 grain arrow.

The major improvement for stability is the riser length. The longer the riser, the more stable it gets (weight away from the grip). That’s the main new feature this year. Didn’t mention that.

IBO speeds, which is what bow manufacturers publish, are calculated using a 30-inch draw length, 70 lbs draw weight and a 350-grain arrow. It represents essentially the -maximum safe speed you can get from a bow with the longest draw, highest poundage and lightest arrow. Most archers never come close to IBO speed with their setup as we're shooting 28-29 inch draw lengths with much heavier hunting arrows. The purpose of the test was to show what most hunters can expect to get from their setup.

The Triax is getting better speeds, then the 31, if you read what I said, you see I said, I would buy the VXR 28. I never said, Hoyt sucked. I use too own many Hoyts. You're talking out your asshole, about shit you know nothing about. I might buy a VXR 28. Not because it is a better bow, I'm not a big fan of the new grip. I do like the switch mods and the option of the feature for the stand rope. Also Hoyts are not any better. I have said, Hoyts are way over priced. You're the one talking shit running your mouth trashing bow company's.

You know you are running out of ideas for your flagship bows when one of your two key selling points is a button you can put a sling or a pull up rope on. Such a great feature for a 1100$ naked bow! A even bigger joke is that this extra option is going to cost you a extra 60$ for four screws, 2 brackets that anyone with a hacksaw and a drill can make, and a 30' "Mathews exclusive" paracord rope. This option doesn't even come with the sling which is another 90$......Obviously you don't have to buy these options but my point is, this bow only has 2 new "key" features, one of which you have to pay extra for just to benefit from it....these bow companies are ripping people off left and right. Go buy you a 400$ bow, practice your form, practice shooting, and you'll kill just as many deer.

@Justin Zarr I completely agree with your post response here Justin. I currently have a Halon 6 and usually wait 3-5 years before I upgrade. I came close last year with the Vertix but was really waiting to see if a new 28" was going to come out. I am totally upgrading to the VXR asap. Can you tell me what string, cable and serving colors you used on yours. I was going to go with the black bow but after seeing yours may go with the green. Love the color combo you put together.

Casual shooters have no idea what's going on, Mathews I'd just an amazing company, they extended the riser, which makes it quieter and more accurate, I'm telling you the change you may not think is big but it is, check out Lucas at Archery Talk he knows more about bows then anyone and so do target shooters, these bows are Target type but in a hunting compact setup. I own a Vertix and I'm about to make it my 3D bow and get this 28 for hunting!

AS REAL AS IT GETS 4 meses atrás
@Jeff Doty Unfortunately, Mathews does not include factory accessories such as silencers in their calculated weight. Also, once you add aftermarket accessories this bow will be close to 7lbs. 4.6lbs for a 31" bow is extremely high. There are 35" bows available that weigh less. The additional 4" overall length is a huge advantage when it comes to forgiveness & accuracy.

@Rusty Shackleford String angle is 1.5 inch on each side, the ATA is subjective and in your mind, check out Lucas from Archery Talk he knows his stuff, he shoots a lot and he has a good feel for bowd because I agree with 95% of what conclusions he comes back with, hes a 31 inch draw and he knows all about it, hes shooting the 30 inch draw and he said it was better angle then his traverse, if your risers longer its changing everything on the string angle. Lots and lots of people criticizes Mathews but real archers and people who know what changes are being done is just amazing to see how much they are changing, and people say it's the Halon but I'd put my Halon up against any of these others and it shoots and feels different. Traverse is a great bow and if I didnt like these bows I'd be buying one for 3D, but now the Vertix is my 3D bow and the VRX 28 will be my hunting bow, I lived getting in and out chasing elk down the roads hoping out and cutting them off, late season elk is about to start soon, packing it on my backpack while we bike in 4-5 miles a short bow that shoots big is perfect out here, I garantee you could shoot this VXR 28 damn fine!!! I'm 29 inch draw and Triax was a great bow I just couldnt do the grip, even the after market wasnt perfect for me

It's a upgraded triax with same cam and draw cycle with different grip and a few modifications. And it's longer even tho it's 28 inches my triax sits inside the vrx by almost inch or more on both ends. Either way it's a shooter and I love it so that's what I'm running for nxt few years. Been a pure mathews guy since 2008. For me it's quieter, more dead in hand and smoother drawing then all other hunting bows I've shot. Hash tag fanboy
