Just goes to show how incredible Sir Alex Ferguson was as a man manager. He single handedly ran Man UTD almost with the help of Gill but he also arguably achieved greater things with Aberdeen in the 80’s winning two European trophies with a small provincial club that had no right to be beating teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Hamburg etc. The steady decline of Man Utd is a mirror of Aberdeen’s decline since SAF left them. It may be a long long time before we see Man Utd return to the top, if not ever.

@Francis The players didn't run UTD. They played the games. I'm sure there were lots of staff who helped keep the club going. I think Fergie was at the helm and he had a lot of help, in fact he was a really god delegator.

Let's not kid ourselves. Alex was pure lucky to have that squad and luck back then. I will bet a million bucks with you if Alex Ferguson is still in more football management, he will be near the relegation zone. Gary Neville the has been plus his bunch of Looney teammates will always think they were great because they actually won something. I urge all neutral fans to look up clips where Gary tried to dig industrial secrets from pep guardiola. Gary, Roy, Paul are all absolutely clueless patsies. I don't see Alan shearer nor Thierry Henry living in the past. Certainly not Dennis bergkamp. But I do see giggs being repeatedly sued for abuse of women, Rooney visiting a granny social escort, scholes betting on games... Ferdinand in s** scandals. You don't see REAL good players like Beckham, Gary O pallister, Dennis Irwin or even Bryan Robson talk smack like this

if a restaurant or pub is failing it falls to the owner to change the direction of the business, Jaime seems to not understand this. The staff, chef, waiters, bartenders, everything, if you need better chefs, the owner needs to hire better chefs, if you need a skillful bartender who can make great cocktails then you need to hire one. United is basically like the glazers are hiring chefs who microwave the food, and they've got Dave from down the road pulling pints, most of the staff aren't qualified, and the management is terrible, that's all down to the owners.

It’s absolutely tragic what is happening to United. As a fan I’m heart broken because I’ve witnessed this decline since 2013 and I see things getting so much worse and I don’t see a solution to this problem. United is such a unique club that no one apart from Fergie and his staff knew how to control it. The harsh reality is THE Manchester United finished with Fergie and his staff. 😞

They're both right. These players are shockingly underperforming and the owners have let things devolve to this level. Ultimately, United need to rebuild over a period of five years and be willing to get worse in the short-term for doing it but the media attention and the impatience of the supporters would make that very difficult.

How does Gary know all these facts? Impressive. And he is spot on comparing how owners passionately spend on their clubs vs selfish and nonchalant Man U owners. Replying to Phantom Phan, letting LVG go in 2016 was not the worst decision the club made; letting Mourinho go after a good season because of a temporary hiccup was worse. And letting OSG go despite good progress is the worst - just see how well Arteta is doing now and you will understand.

@Jansk1h Solskjaer may not have led United back to the very pinnacle but he was definitely leading them on the right road before the owners interjected again to bring in players that weren't what the squad needed. First full season in charge, United finished 3rd, had the 3rd best defence in the league and the front 3 of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood outscored Liverpool's front 3 that won the title that year. They beat City, Chelsea and Leicester (2nd, 4th and 5th that year) home and away, got 4 points off Tottenham (6th) and a point off Liverpool (1st). They were a team based on youth, fast counter attacks with a lot of players that were hungry for success. The plan in Summer 2020 was bring in more midfield creativity- Grealish as the main target- and a RW threat- Sancho the main target. And what did the board back him with? Refused to pay the £60m to get Grealish or pay for Sancho; signed Van de Beek on the cheap, a player he clearly didn't want, and then when the fans started complaining about lack of signings, they panic bought Telles, Cavani and Amad in the final days of the window, none of which were needed or fitted with what we were doing. Solskjaer tried far too much to integrate Paul Pogba into the team which had done so well the year before when he should have cut him loose and it disrupted some of the football we'd started to produce. Fast forward a year and history repeated. We signed Sancho, failed to sign a creative midfielder or defensive midfielder, and did not cut loose the likes of Pogba, Lingard, Bailly and Matic to name a few who were all past their best and nearing the end of their contracts. The club then brought in Varane, an exceptional player that is unfortunately very injury prone now, and then panic bought Ronaldo at the end of the window and we all know how much that screwed the team up and there was no recovery. Already Ten Haag appears to have realised that the Solskjaer tactical plan was the right one to follow, the recent successes being built on being defensively solid and quick counter attacks. The Rangnick "we must press as much as City and Liverpool" nonsense was quickly binned (no one plays like they do and to try and emulate it is just naive, we should play to our own strengths). Arsenal are a great comparison as they are flying currently because they stuck to Arteta's youthful vision, backed him in the market and it is now starting to come together. Even if Arteta cannot be the person that takes Arsenal back to PL titles, it shouldn't take much for a better coach to come in and finish the job that he's started. That is what Solskjaer should have always been for United, the man that turned United around from the Van Gaal and Mourinho years and set them on the right path that someone else could finish if he couldn't. But because of yet more recruitment and player retention failures, his work was undone and we're starting from scratch again.
Frederick
Frederick Mês atrás
@Jansk1h I get what you're saying but apart from Mourinho (won a trophy), nobody else did better than OGS despite less experience. His ignorance on fire approach was a breath of life and getting to that many semis and final was very good. I think he could have built upon it if they gave him time or at least let him finish the season. Ragnick didn't do any better. Erik is looking promising but if he doesn't win anything in his first season with all the money spent would be pretty much same if not worse than OGS.
Jansk1h
Jansk1h Mês atrás
I agree with you on everything except Solskjaer. He might be a decent bloke, but he just wasn't the type of manager that could take United to the top, and when you're as big of a club as United are you really need a amanger who can take you to the top and challenge for the Champions League title. They aren't doing that now, because the club's poorly run, but they certainly weren't gonna do it with Solskjaer.

In my humble opinion, they need to adopt a long term approach in which players from its yought academy are promoted to pro team. They will contribute with commitment and sense of ownership to bring MU afloat. It will take time but at the end, this bet will pay off as the class of '92 did.

Gary is absolutely spot on. Most of the decisions made are now commercially influenced and have little to do with the footballing project (core business). Recruitment is now done on the basis of what the player can bring from a commercial perspective and not from a footballing one. I also believe this is also influencing team selection; which players would the fans pay to watch. The Glazers simply have to go.

@Jesus Palmerin I do agree with you that a number of managers could indeed buy every player they wanted. But I do have two remarks on this. First, buying a player that did perform well at another club doesn't mean anything. At that other club those players (Pogba, C.Ronaldo or a Lukaku for example) did have players around them who could compensate the weaknesses that those players do also have. With just buying a few big stars you don't have a team that does perform. It takes time, patience and endurance to create a team that does perform. By buying a few big names you will reach nothing if those players don't have a team around them. Buying instant succes is a utopia. This does never happen, doesn't matter the level you play or in which country. (League) This brings me to my second point. Which manager did really get the time to build such a team ? Most managers are kicked out after two years or even earlier. And that is simply not enough time to create anything. Such a manager will have his own ideology about "the perfect" team, and will ask the club owners to get him certain players. But if you sack that particular manager in less than two years, no team has been build. And the next manager will have his own ideas about what the perfect team looks like. United wants to buy instant succes, but this will not happen. Not in the last ten years, not now, and not in the next ten years. The only way to bring the club back to it's old glory, is to give a manager the time to build. Meaning that supporters should not expect anything in the first few seasons. This United is just a very average team that won't win any trophee. So supporters, stakeholders etc etc etc should not expect anything in the next four years. Just be happy if you don't relegate. If United can not bring this up, then the club is death, and we will see it play in the Championship very soon. But there is one positive side. With Ten Hag the club has a manager who knows how to build a team. And no he doesn't need ten players of 100 million each, his strong point is that he does know how to find the right players that can compensate eachother. He proved it at all his previous clubs. So give the men at least four seasons to build, and demand results from then on. At this moment the "big stars" don't even want to come to Manchester, not United at least. As a non English men even I can understand that this hurts the fans. But only time can make this club healthy again.

Spot on the point Gary was making. He sees the bigger picture. Unless the owner changes, and them bleeding the club dry, no advancement can be made throughout the club. You can buy massive good plyers and train the best but even those players will wither down and loose sense under poor management. Its a pity we can only witness this as a fan but cant do nothing about it.

But after listening to his reasons/explanation, I think, damn, he's so right. It's really bad to see such a successful club has literally gone to pot. That pass from De Gea to Eriksen had nothing to do with the Glazers. However the wage structure and contracts renewals is. Which is causing a bottleneck in the squad and being unable to let players go. The club has spent a huge amount of money on players who have not turned up in matches. it’s the fault of the board, successive managers and the players.

As much as I agree with Gary & Jaimie, I cannot believe that a team consisting of first choice international players from England, Brazil, Portugal, Denmark can’t beat a team like Brentford which in all likelihood finish in the bottom half of the table. Both Pep & Klopp had slow starts in their first seasons. Time to back the manager and pay a premium price for players who probably wouldn’t cost as much because we screwed up in the market. Lastly Ten Hag should have fought to keep Ralf. Ralf would have been a great ally to Ten Hag.

I agree with Gary here. As we say it, where i come from: 'the fish smells from it's head'. Leadership or lack there of is crucial. With crappy back noise and conditions around players all the time, they inevitably will under perform. There are dozens of clubs as example that drifted into obscurity over time, big clubs, medium sized clubs, smaller clubs. Bad leadership is the common ground nothing else. Think about why Rangnick gtfo quick, he saw he wasn't given the tools or the power needed to make a change there. Bankers only be like: Sign well known name for merch (player) without tactical concept and drain money through share dividends. Refinance loans, let stadium rot and don't invest in any additional or new personal/facilities that have proven to be beneficial in many other clubs already 5-10 years ago. It's all max margin now and no sustainability or outlook on the future. Really sad to see in real time.

Too be honest, we've seen the same thing with Arsenal not too long ago. I firmly believe the money is being spent, but it's on all the wrong players. Rebuilds always take time, but Man U have been making the same mistakes time and time again. I love the passion from Gary, and I think everyone in the premier league wants to see Manchester United be better than what we have been seeing. As a Liverpool fan I don't like seeing it, because I want better competition. Don't get me wrong, they have good players, but they aren't being utilized properly. That 5-0 defeat last season at Old Trafford was just painful to watch. I saw the fans, and the players give up. There is no heart in this team....also, tactically speaking why the hell was Christian Erikson playing as a CDM in this game haha?

What it comes down for Man Utd is organisational culture. In Sralex the had a personality that was big enough to impose the culture he wanted top to bottom. Since his departure that culture has evaporated and has been replaced by a culture of ego. What the club needs is someone who can impose a new culture of winning an excellence. The chances of finding a manager who can do that are slim and so a new owner who can do it could work. Get that culture sorted and everything will fall into place.
