Do you think this marks a shift in Apple's plan? I REALLY like this price tag. It's still an expensive phone but I think Apple is finally paying attention to the market.

Apple is selling a very expensive Iphone to Poorer Countries and selling LESS expensive Iphone to Richer countries. So unfair right?

For each dollar you lower the price you lose money per smartphone but you increase the number of smartphones you sell so the loss isn’t as big as it seems

i feel only asian are iphone crazy like me, so far i havnt seen an iphone in any of the european tourist here in South east asia. USA does not have Xiaomi and Huawei, so it does nt count

From an Android user- I'll tell you why they are doing this. The historical cost of Apple devices were high, Apple users were holding on to their devices too long. Apple fans wanted the Apple experience, but the majority of people didn't have the cash to keep buy new models every other year. So sales slowed, and the iPhone 11 is a well priced phone that will help stimulate the sales. You said this is mostly a "refresh" model, meaning not much new R&D and not much change in the manufacturing process, means that they are not really losing money, because they are generating sales and turnover that will more than compensate for the lower cost of this model. I think it's a smart move. I won't be getting this (still android here), but I will be buying one for my wife and daughter, and it's because the device is now priced competitively. But the interesting thing here, is now that the price is more competitive, not only do you have Apple users buying this new model, but now you create a market to suck in Android users that would normally not shell out the high cost for an Apple product.

Saying that Apple will make x dollars less, one should consider the price of making the product. It's quite possible that new iPhone 11 is more than 50 dollars cheaper to make than iPhone XR
