Former Denver Broncos running back Reggie Rivers discusses how focusing on your goals is the one sure way NOT to achieve them. With humor and insight he goes on to explain how focusing on your behaviors is how you achieve goals.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

1. Set goal 2. Forget the goal and determine the process you need to achieve the goal 3. Fall in love with the process 4. Do the process without thinking about the goal 5. Eventually, achieve the goal
@Bilal Khlaid .....reverse engineering..... Forxample if you want to become a physical fit .....and you want to make a plan or process to follow and archive it ...start by doing research about your goal but specifically center your research on finding the steps needed to reach it .....after finding out the steps (fully noted in writing you ) arrange them from the top starting with the nearest to your goal to the farthest away from your goal...start with the farthest and climb up.......if your process needed to be repeated to archive your goal repeat it (like changing the body appearance ,preparation for debates etc might repeating the process) some need consistency....... An example of the process ...changing body ( Do research and find out what's needed and do that ) if it necessities change of diet identify the diet and stay on it ,staying on it is the process...
Thank you actually training and teaching my self on how to focus on my goals am literary going to follow these 5 steps in addition to Reggie rivers .

@Bilal Khlaid There is no exact formula because everyone is different but here is an overview of how I've handled this - my suggestions with example. 1) Complete a Wheel of Life assessment (free online). 2) Pick one area of your life you want to work on (example Health). 3) Think about what you would like to accomplish and write down goal and be as specific as possible. Example: What / Why? I want to live a long healthy life so I can enjoy my family, friends, travel the world, make a significant contribution, be the oldest person alive, or enjoy everything life has to offer. This is the only body temple I have and it's my responsibility (my control) to take care of it. I don't want to be sick and die young like my mom, and I'm the only person that can do this for me. If I don't take care of my health, what happens? I will be weak as I get older, get some disease and be depressed and I reject this. 4) What behavior can I implement? Ideas include: set a timer to get to bed 30 earlier so you can wake up 30 earlier and go for a run, walk, do a YT video. Prepare your exercise clothes the night before. Take time on Sunday afternoon to do some meal prep and take your lunch work 2-3 days. Join a fitness class or dance with your kids or friends. There are many free resources on YT about all of these topics including creating habits - I like Tiny Habits. Praying for your success! ❤️

@Paratagon Agree. In addition to having a why -- I add "what happens if I don't do these practices?" Example: I want to practice self care to live a long healthy life. If I don't practice self care, I will be prone to getting old people diseases like dementia.

This is one of the best Ted Talks that I had ever listened too. It is also one of the first Ted Talks that actually made me laugh out loud. What Reggie said is true. Don't focus on your goals, focus on your behaviors. I had been focusing on my goals a lot and not getting anywhere. Time for a whole different approach.

One of the best TED talk I have watched in a while . I wasnt financial free until my 40’s and I’m still in my 40’s, bought my second house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future! Investing is a grand choice I made. Great video! Thanks for sharing! Very inspiring! I love this

@Puneet Jajoo JR This is a shocker seeing Regina Louise Collaro is being mentioned here. I always had mixed feelings about hiring a lnvestment advisor. For the record, I started working with Regina in 2019, and she manages about 70% of my lnvestments, while I manage the other 30%. My philosophy is that I care more about my own money than anyone else, but she made me accept that they have wealth of information on current conditions and future trends

@Puneet Jajoo JR When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps. I have had the intentions of starting investing. But I always thought it was late and I think I need to stop procrastinating. I will definitely 🔍 Regina Louise Collaro and see what she can advise .Thanks a lot . This was of so much help to me .

@EA dad Generally, investing requires higher knowledge. For this reason, It's important to have a solid support structure (financial consultant) to guide you through especially in asset picking. I operate with (Regina Louise Collaro) an investment advisor who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, the experience has been the best for my finance. She is quite popular for her services so you might have heard of her. She made me financially stable investing through her help, now I earn on a monthly basis through her passive income strategy... So I’ll advise you do get a good Investment advisor for yourself.

My Summary : If you wanna achieve your goals, focus on controlling your actions/behavior towards yourself or other people. Don't focus on the goals itself, but focus to enjoy the process that will lead you to achieve your goals instead. Ex : i wanna get a fit body, so i do exercise. I focus on exercising that day and feel good at the moment. I focus on the part that i can controlled, which is controlling myself, my consistency. Try to enjoying the workout while thinking that i've been closer to my goal. ^^ Just in case if you're in a hurry, hope it's helpful :)

In my opinion, having a goal is important because if a person has a goal then he/she inspire himself to do better things. And other things is there's a lot to do with behaviour. In my experience, 4 years ago my goal is to finish college and today I'm so excited because I'm graduating student so I believe that behaviour is one of the things to focus on too.

This video teaches me two things. Firstly don't focus on your goal, focus on your actions or behaviors which help you to achieve your goal. Secondly, the things which are not under your control, don't worry about them. Just focus on yourself. Be sure you are doing right, right for you which is not bad for others, and everything else left for God.

This reminded me about the system of 4 disciplines of execution of Stephen covey institute . When you focus on lead goals( things under your control) rather than lag goals ( results) you can keep yourself motivated , and forget about the current undesired situation which would normally bring you down and prevent you from acting . Minding your own business no matter what is a great virtue.

This talk reminds me of a Jim Rohn quote: _“The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.”_ When we focus on the behaviour as Reggie puts it, goals make us a better person. That's the real gem of setting goals. It's not whatever we set out to achieve, but rather, the person we grow into as a result.

Focus on what you can control (behaviours) instead of things out of your control (goals). Step-by-step: 1. Set goal 2. Set actionable plan on short-term 3. Forget about the goal, focus on the plan and your behaviours instead 4. At the end of the day, you will achieve your goal.

I just watched this now and I think I can share it here what I also have learned from one of the BRvidrs, Rowena Tsai wherein she says not to build goals but systems. And with this, I believe and agree to what this man said, you have to set or determine your goal/s first, then after that you have to build your system or the process on how you will going to achieve that goal. Because in the end, we're not really after of that goal but of what we have become along the process and what thing we have learned as well. It's also good to know that you're focusing on your progress or the system that you have built in because you just enjoy it and not rush things for getting that goal. ❤️

For me, I believe that if I want to achieve a goal there's a. b. c. d. things I need to do. So, in other words, if I just do a. b. c. d., I'll achieve the goal. Soooo *ALL* I need to do is focus on doing the a. b. c. d. and eventually I'll achieve the goal. Breaking down goals like this really helps make them more achievable and accessible. When there's something you can do everyday or even once a week that gets you closer to your goal, it's less stressful and more motivating! That was a great talk, Reggie Rivers! And I loved the story about Lasandra xD.

Wow! I realized one thing! We should focus on our actions to achieve the goal. Not on the goals! You will just day-dream about your goal all day long, but that will not do any success at all. Instead, we should focus on our actions NOW that can little by little achieve our goals and objectives in life with respect to proper time management and discipline. To cut it short, we should be ACTION-BASED! Thank you TEDx! Thank you and God Bless! Now that's an idea worth spreading!

I found this to be true in my life. There are so many goals I didn't achieve because i was so focused on them I wanted them as fast as possible, which meant doing unenjoyable behaviors (lots of cramming) and eventually quitting. But I also got a black belt in Taekwondo when that wasn't a serious goal. I just liked hanging out at the club with my team mates so I trained everyday. (Enjoyable behavior) Making the good behaviors enjoyable I think is the key to a good life.

On a business side, we say to ourselves : Networking, Networking, Networking and all what is not networking is waste of time for the business, while you can just say Hi to people (the behavior) and try to be open then you will find yourself at least half way there through networking (the goal).

He was 100% right; I can tell this from my own experience. At one point in my life, I was so much committed to a goal, that I almost forgot I have a family who love and yearn for my attention and yet I ignored them and totally focused on my goal. Guess what? I failed to achieve it; then I felt totally ashamed of my behavior towards my near and dear ones and totally abandoned my outside responsibilities; I went from one extreme to the other extreme: both are problematic and are prone to failure, depression, and/or anxiety. At another point in my life, I ultimately achieved something, something of a kind that I have been waiting for so many years to get, and this is the first time I got something like this. But when I achieved itm I felt relaxed and slowly but surely retired from my responsibilities, since I already achieved it! I deserve rest now. However, internally, I was not happy either, because I was questioning myself: does it worth so much struggle, pain & sacrifices? I mean, I didn't really enjoy much of the process I had to go through to achieve that goal, most of the steps directly conflicted with my personality type (I had to do a lot of acting to conform with the crowd around me though I didn't like those type of people), yet I forbore for the sake of that goal because I was thinking: how awesome that goal would be! If I achieve it, its joy will definitely let me forget about all those sacrifices, etc. But the opposite happened. I felt that the joy was momentary, as compared to the actual pains of the process. In summary, I realized that if you don't like the process, no matter whether you achieve your goal or not, you won't be satisfied/fulfilled/happy. So love what you do rather than loving/focusing on your goals.

Thank you Reggie! I recently had Weigh loss surgery June 9th. In Oct,2015 my first weigh in at the Bariatric Center I weighed 299. I am 5ft 3 in. Today I weigh 249. Your speech is teaching me to focus on my behaviors not on my goal. This speech really spoke to me.

This was so powerful. I was told that buying Gumball machines and vending machines would NEVER work for me or make me any money. Not only 5 minutes later did I get the opportunity to buy a full route business for my son and I am the owner and co owner with my 2 years old son.

first of all, this guy is very charismatic, I admire that. and what he's saying is probably true. For 3 years now I wanted to be a rapper but never focus on how to be one. I'm going to try to write my first song tonight. wish me luck yo.

I've been getting the highest grades in my class for years and now I am thinking that I could do better and get better because I am born with a talent and what if I could make myself better. There is a girl in my class who failed an exam by one mark and a couple of days ago she got 2 marks more than I scored. (It was a coincidence but it is still that I am 2 marks behind, right?) And I believe that this could be the best timd to change my life and work harder like I have never done before. Because I want my parents to be proud of me. I love them so much. (To be honest, I didn't even had a good goal. But in the last exam I studied really hard just because of corona.)

this is surely for me... whenever i focus on the goal, i'm always exhausted, like right now. things are getting harder, i just want to give up thinking about the outcome! future is not even happen

Very impressive! Focus on your behavior instead of the goal you've set. it'll get you closer to your goal and keep you motivated. I'll definitely keep that in mind and put that into practice! Thx for the video:)

This really has me thinking about my goals for the year. I've had these same goals but I haven't been motivated to achieve them. Now I see that I really need to focus on what I can do/control NOW/today that will eventually get me to where I want to be...Its gonna be hard work

totally agree. the mindset, focusing on behaviors, processes instead of focusing on goals make me try to do new things and motivate myself. besides, I could be more resilient from bad results. love this ted

The same idea is in the book Atomic Habits which is to focus on the behaviors rather than the goal with that being said this video is really wonderful

Focus on what you can control by yourself like your actions (behavior ) rather than just thinking about the goal for wholetime in order to achieve goal . Eg : My goal is to wake up early in morning so if I just want that and not trying at all to get up early so nothing will work . just focus on your actions like try to sleep early at night which helps you to wake up early in morning.
