Yes, I know I misspoke about the Leaf Stone bit at the end, but the whole "level up in a mossy area" way to get a Leafeon still works with epigenetics. The environment of "mossy" or special areas are acting as the environment triggers to UNLOCK the genetic code. Fighting in a mossy area is forcing the Eevee to evolve in that direction to improve their battle prowess specifically in those environments, hence the genes becoming unlocked.

I watched this video more than 2 years ago and it inspired me to learn more about epigenetics. I was already enrolled in a biotechnology degree in college but I hadn't decided what I was going to specialize in yet (I'm Brazil we don't have majors and minors). After watching this episode of game theory I decided to enroll in an epigenetic course that was facultative for me and later I started working at a lab that did epigenetic research. Tomorrow I'll be presenting my final project to get my bachelor's degree. The theme of my thesis? EPIGENETIC! All because of a "silly BRvid video about pokemon".

They should show these videos in science classes, I’d pay so much more attention. I mean seriously, it takes an already interesting topic from science, simplifies it to help people understand way better than the videos that are meant to do it, and couples it with popular franchises to make it more interesting because you get to learn about your favorite show, video game, or movie along the way!

Rainy Kitten Art
Rainy Kitten Art 7 meses atrás
I don't know if it would be considered epigenetics, but Siamese cats change their fur color based on temperature too! That's why their extremities (ears, feet, tail, etc.) are dark - they're generally cooler because they're further away from the main part of the body. And since darker colors absorb more heat, it makes sense as an evolutionary tactic. If you somehow managed to make a Siamese cat wear socks for a few weeks, they would have white/cream colored paws :)

In Pokémon Master journeys they give a brief explanation to how Eevee evolves, they said Eevee has unique genetics that are broken up with different DNA allowing it to adapt to any stone and be able to have that part of their DNA be activated. Also their was one Eevee who couldn’t evolve because they said that Eevee’s DNA was “too broken” and it wasn’t able to react to any stones.

My father, Yi Zhang, who is a Harvard professor who works on epigenetic, just watched your explaination on epigenetics, and he has two things to say. 1.) You did a good job on making the basis of epigenetics understandable by someone who isn’t familiar with it. 2.) But, you simplified to a point where a.) DNA is not locked, it is more whether or not it is accessible by proteins b.) The environment factor does not directly turn genes “on” or “off”, but to affect cofactors that are needed for the enzymatic activities of epigenetic enzymes. Overall, he said that you did a good job, and I agree that without your explaination, I, nor about a million other people, wouldn’t understand epigenetics at all.

Do you have a theory on the friendship evolutions? There are some Pokémon that can only evolve when you and the Pokémon max out your friendship. Like Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon for example if you teach your Eevee a fairy move and then max out your friendship you get a sylveon, if you want an Espeon, just let it learn psychic moves and say no to learning fairy. Umberon, same thing, but don’t let it evolve until night. Frosmoth, also a Pokémon that evolves via friendship, but also can only evolve at night. Is that just a magic thing? or was it a magic/science thing?

Interestingly, this would correlate with the programming. As you would have to have all of the code for every version of eevee present in the game, and any given instance of an Eevee (which, by the way, amuses the heck out of me that it is in my phone's dictionary) in the code would behave with a similar epigenetic behavior as you described for the biology of the eevee, a direct programming to biology correlation can be made. Oddly, one of those rare instances were programming code could be considered to precisely match its potential biological code if said world were real. (**crawls back into mom's basement**)

I would love to have worked on this with you ^_^ There is also a theory of mine connecting the eevee line and specifically Espeon to Mew, the "ancestor" of all Pokemon. Given most mew have gone extinct pokemon like Eevee with it's unstable DNA and Espeon with it's many similar traits to mew could be modern days closes't living ancestor to Mew

Bird Keeper Toby if we use early models of phylogeny or a new one adapted to how pokemon are designed yes, theoretically it could be. In a totally scientific (in terms of our world) phylogeny though, while they may be similar or even considered convergently evolved to an extent, they would share very little DNA by direct correlation of evolution. Even if mew has the DNA of all pokemon it wouldn't be the same thing; you can give a sheep a gene which allows it to create spider silk via spinnearettes (if I remember correctly), but that doesn't make it related to spiders.

considering the evolutionary families of most bug pokemon, and the fact that pokemon was inspired by the creator's childhood hobby of bug catching, I had always thought that pokemon evolution was actually just metamorphosis, though then again- metamorphosis itself is also a form of epigenetic expression so :V YA GOT ME haha

My game theory of how its POSSIBLE to find evolved forms is because they need to hunt, or worry about predators. Which means, even if they did technically win, they would still be stress, which explains the lower EXP earning based on how the levels of the two pokemon compare.

I was about to say "what if I left my pokemon at the daycare" and how it would evolve there if it wasn't exposed to harsh battling conditions. Then I realised, they _don't_ evolve when left in a daycare (which I learnt after leaving my Magikarp there until it leveled up *past* it's evolution level and soon when I picked it up, I got a buffed up Magikarp, but no Gyarodos :c ). You can, however, pick up the pokemon from the daycare *before* leveling up to it's evolution level, and then level it up to evolve by - you guessed it - battling. Good job MatPat! Another great theory. PS: Or is this _really_ MatPat? No cringy joke before the intro? Naaaah this can't be

@ex Lightning Pokemon gaining exp from catching other pokemone still makes since because you're pokemon were in a battle with that other pokemon before it was caught in the pokeball. Unless you are talking about let's go Eevee/Pikachu in which case those games were released Very Very recently and made to be a dumbed down version of regular pokemon.

4 Reasons why you're wrong 1 - Rare candy 2 - Pokemon can get exp from you catching other pokemon 3 - Evolution stones 4 - Trade evolutions

@Kay Plays To be fair, it could be that Rare Candies trigger the same genes within the Pokemon that would be triggered by battling, just doing it by a chemical stimulus rather than a purely environmental one. That would also explain how a piece of candy effectively gives experience in the same way that fighting potentially dozens of battles would......

Except if you get it past it's evolutionary cap and feed it a rare candy without battling. Then it'll evolve without being in battle. But that is also a really specific set of events anyway

MatPat : hmm yes the Epigenetics in a Pokemon are activated when forced in specific situations, and depending on the situation your Pokemon evolves adaptively. GameFreak : “if enemy gets bonk, your pokemon gets stronk”

Hey guys, did you know that in terms of human companionship, Flareon is objectively the most huggable Pokémon? While their maximum temperature is likely too much for most, they are capable of controlling it, so they can set themselves to the perfect temperature for you. Along with that, they have a lot of fluff, making them undeniably incredibly soft to touch. But that’s not all, they have a very respectable special defense stat of 110, which means that they are likely very calm and resistant to emotional damage. Because of this, if you have a bad day, you can vent to it while hugging it, and it won’t mind. It can make itself even more endearing with moves like Charm and Baby Doll Eyes, ensuring that you never have a prolonged bout of depression again.
