I remember when my son and I walked into a McDonald's and they said that only the ice cream machine was working. We looked at each other and wondered if we were in an alternate dimension.

The McDonald's I worked at would have the machine do a heat clean once a week in the morning. For some reason we were told to tell people the machine was broken even though it was just stuff off for cleaning. I have no idea why because I'm sure I would have been yelled at less if I could have just said it was being cleaned 🤦‍♀️ the real conspiracy is that McDonald's just hates their staff
Nathaniel Weller
Nathaniel Weller 7 dias atrás
@Godless Death I guess it probably depends on what the owners say but the ones who own the stores I have worked for say once a week. I've cleaned a decent amount of the parts for the machine before I just haven't ever actually seen anyone disassemble or reassemble said parts so that's really the part I don't know.
Godless Death

@Nathaniel Weller Depends on the store. I'm the one who cleans the machines at my store and its once every 2 weeks. It's not hard to clean them but takes a couple hours.

@Godless Death the machine should enter heat mode every night on it's own and it's supposed to be taken apart and cleaned once a week i'm trying to learn how to clean one myself so I know how to do it.

@Godless Death you are right. It was the full clean I meant. We did it once a week and heat clean every night. I confused them I wasn't the maintenance person I was just there every morning it was being done.

As a current employee, I can say that it's not ALWAYS broken. Sometimes the machine overheats and a mechanic has to come out, but it's not as bad as we tend to make it. And *trust me*, we want it to work as much as you do (because we can have free ice cream and other food)

As a current employee I agree. Last time I tried to use the icecream machine I didn't notice it was doing the automatic heat clean thing and ended up with icecream as hot as oil (no exaggeration) all over my hand. Now I have the story of how I burnt myself with icecream.

I feel that pain I've been an employee at McDonalds for 3 years the amount of times I hear someone ask me if the machine is up on a daily basis is more than a little annoying especially since 9/10 times it isn't broken. You heard me right folks most of the time the ice cream machine isn't broken. My first store whenever it was broken it would take 2-3 weeks for the mechanic to come out to fix it. Our owners aren't happy about that but not just because it's that restaurant specifically but all the ones they own. I also feel the whole we want the ice cream machine to work just as much as the customers thing because i love me some milkshakes, but I think a lot of people don't realize that the ice cream machine uses the same stuff that cars use to keep it cold and just like cars when the machine uses too much of it; it runs out. As MatPat said in his video there are certain things that can only be done by the company that produces our machines because believe it or not plenty of ice cream machines McDonalds uses they don't actually own. That plays into the whole having to call a mechanic out to fix it and it taking 2-3 weeks for the mechanic to actually come out thing. There are also times where the machine has to be taken offline for cleaning and that can take several hours otherwise if we didn't do it our shakes, flurries, cones, and sundaes would be just like Sonic's blasts. Granted there are times and restaurants that will take their machines down on purpose just so they don't have to sell ice cream, but not a whole lot of stores do that and it's usually only during the last few hours of that store's operation. Otherwise if we say the ice cream machine is down it's because it is ACTUALLY down for one reason or another. Whether or not it's done on purpose it's a different topic entirely that's open for debate but if it is done on purpose it isn't McDonalds doing but Taylor's.

being a McDonald's employee my particular store, run by people who own 15 stores, are actually suing the company who provides the machine because of people thinking stuff like "it's broken on purpose", we don't want it to be. why would we want customers to cus us out and yell at us? the providers are milking us for money and having us take the brunt of the public's displeasure
Nathaniel Weller

@Jonkea The Gamer yes but keep in mind the company and more accurately the franchisees have to pay money each time they call a mechanic out to LOOK at the ice cream machine and more to fix it when it is broken.

I asked someone who works at McDonald’s why the ice cream machine never works, and he said that if the machine is just very very slightly dirty it’ll shut itself off until it’s perfectly clean. So they have to tell customers a lot that the ice cream machine is down again so they can clean it for the 100th time that day

What's most interesting to me is how this slowly creeped in. 50 years ago we were a culture that took such pride in repairing what we owned, having the freedom to repair what we own, extending the natural life of our own property. It's not like someone flipped a switch and then magically, everything from cameras to medical equipment to agricultural devices and consumer electronics were all unfixable. It was a slow creep over time to the point that most people didn't even notice until past decade. Thank you for going over this that more people have an idea what is happening, so that hopefully we can reverse it together!
Westrim 5 dias atrás
That's recency bias. The struggle for right to repair has been going on about as long as civilization. There's documentation about guilds in Roman times insisting that only they be allowed to repair the things they built. There are contracts from the water wheel driven looms days that forbade anyone but the manufacturer from servicing parts of it (and then records of the resultant injuries/fatalities when owners both refused to ignore the contract or shut down a dangerously compromised loom). This has been going on forever. Parts are just more complicated now, and there are more of them.
Robert Coffey
Robert Coffey Mês atrás
It is always, always about the creeping expansion of corporate greed. With the introduction of electronics into every facet of our lives, corporations have been given free reign to lock everything down in ways that the consumer isn't readily able to circumvent on their own. So it's definitely a "because they can" and "because money" situation.

And this applies to the McD's ice cream machines as well. When I worked for the clown in the mid 90's, we took those machines apart every night to clean them and inspect the inner parts and had calendars for when we would replace the scrapers and always had bags and bags of the o-rings to replace whenever needed. And at that time the ice cream and shake machines were 2 separate machines. And if for some reason they weren't working, the first step was for an employee that knows how to tear the machine down to do exactly that to try to diagnose the problem. Usually just an assembly error. During my second tour with the Clown in the mid 00's was when I learned of the new Taylor machines. And while ours were not down very often, I was surprised that when it did go down, the manager said we HAVE to call Taylor and that we were not allowed to take it apart. Even though, underneath it is basically the same machine, just now computerized.

I work at McDonalds and most of the time when the machine is "broken" its actually not. It's just easier to tell people that than explain what's really happening. The machine has a hopper which freezes the ice cream and it only holds about 10 ice creams worth. The reason it "breaks" is when a lot of ice cream gets ordered. The machine is filled with liquid at the top which needs time to freeze once it enters the hopper. It only takes about 5 mins to freeze more. So if you ever get told its not working ask if it will be running again soon and they will likely tell you yes then you can just wait 5 mins and try ordering again.

New Food Theory: How many breadsticks can you order from Olive Garden before they run out?
Ro L
Ro L 6 dias atrás
@Katie Taylor the question was how many can one person or even one party order before running out , considering we don’t take parties much larger than 40 ppl on RARE pre planned occasion even if 40 ppl all ate 10 bread sticks , that’s only 400 sticks and we have way more then that , we tray up about 20 sticks a tray and can cook 5 trays at one time. So 100 can be made in the span of about 5 minutes. Trust me we have a very deep supply of breadsticks that are enough to last an entire week. It’s not really too possible to tap the supply of an entire olive gardens bread sticks.
Katie Taylor
Katie Taylor 6 dias atrás
that varies between restaurants due to how much space they have and how many customers they've had in a given period. but I worked at a fazolis (fast food pasta, we also had breadsticks) next to an olive garden that did run out of breadsticks once. they came over and bought a ton of breadsticks from us to tide them over for their dinner rush.
hassunkhan 26 dias atrás
they actually have a portal to the breadstick dimension. they harvest the breadsticks off the vines everytime you order so you constantly get something fresh ❤️
Ro L
Ro L Mês atrás
Bro there’s a job called bread in the schedule someone sits there all day preparing bread. One single person can’t eat more then 20 breadsticks at the most and each batch is around 100 so we wouldn’t easily run out of bread unless you had many many large reserved 30 person parties who each ate 10-15 sticks , I just had 2 26 people parties last night and they didn’t even dent a single batch

@Roland Swift really? how does RTR eliminate jobs? the only difference is that it encourages local family owned business, which puts pressure on the corporate repair monopoly. If you can explain the logic behind job loss that would be appreciated. its also fact at this point that as long as you take a look at reviews, the local repair place will out perform 1st party, unless its because of the artificial lack of parts which RTR is solving
Roland Swift
Roland Swift 4 meses atrás
what it comes down to is 1) it will eliminate job opportunities leading to an increase in unemployment amongst people with little to no other marketable skills 2) it can cause issues with accountability where they can't sue larger corporations with deeper pockets when they crash after they or a smaller mechanic forgets to rotate the tires or things like that

Gotta love customers. I work grocery, and I just put in the code that rounds up to the next dollar before the customer notices because we are in a coin shortage atm, and too many of them complain if I tell them I don't have any coins but the money will be taken off of their next order when they put in their customer ID. They waste my time by asking for a manager expecting to get something we can't give to them which only exacerbates the line and makes more irritable customers as a result.

Right to repair is really, really important, especially when big companies like Apple are notoriously bad at fixing their own products, but your local small repair shop downtown which is a jack-of-all-trades can not only do it faster and cheaper more often than not, they may also treat you less like an idiot and more like an actual human being.
anonemusly 3 meses atrás
LOL all I hear is this right to repair BS. the machines McD uses cannot be repaired by just anyone, your average McD employee cannot "fix" it outside of the normal cleaning procedures the machine needs daily and bi-weekly. There is alot of tech in these machines that can fail, from something as simple as a sensor to something more elaborate like replacing a compressor. same with anything that needs repair you need someone who is trained to do that work. you wouldnt have your out of work bum neighbor who is a self proclaimed handy man come over and put a new roof on your house. you wouldnt fix your own refrigerator or air conditioner. so dont expect any McD employee to "REPAIR" these machines outside of the basic cleaning procedures it needs for daily operations. its not just the ice cream machines either. all the equipment needs repair sooner or later. thats why the company who makes it provides technicians because they have the knowledge on how and what to repair. same reason you take your car to a mechanic to get it fixed, because thats what they were trained for. bottom line is: right to repair is useless if you have no idea HOW to repair it. this only applies to you people who want someone other than apple to fix your precious iphone that you broke. if it wasnt for that, none of this right to repair nonsense would be an issue these days.
Jacob Shrum

Interesting. TEAC does the same thing. I got a disc duplicator from Heartland America years ago. Bargain, right? Yeah, until I had to replace one of the drives. They force you to send it to them to repair because the machine requires parts that are only compatible with their products. I ended up not getting it repaired, because it wasn't worth it. Later I got a Microboards brand one, and now if a drive goes bad, I can buy a generic one and replace it myself. BTW I haven't eaten at McDonald's in years, and I don't remember the last time I had their ice cream.

Once again, Matpat has come through with another reason to not take notice of the Golden Arches as you drive past all the fast food places on your way to your grandparents house. P.S can you do an episode on brain freezes, in the spirit of the ice cream machine and the cold weather

you know there is an hour-long video from last year that discusses this topic and breaks down a lot more. So yeah good on you for at least passing along the basic info to people.

There was a time when my uncle and I went to McDonalds to get some ice cream but they said there was no ice cream. So we just ordered meals. But when we went up to pay we saw a woman getting her food. But one of the food was ICE CREAM

Johnny Harris made a video about this: "The REAL Reason McDonalds Ice Cream Machines Are Always Broken" It's really interesting, I recommend watching it wholeheartedly.
@Tina Bulea wow thats so interesting but nobody asked

They also included more stuff that has happened since Johnny's video, info that has come out during the investigation into the espionage, and the right to repair movement. So many companies have been trying to turn features of your car and household appliances into subscription services without adding any new features that justify it.

When dealing with dairy you really need to keep all the nooks and crannies of the machines clean. Gaps in those seals are food illness lawsuits waiting to happen. However most the the reasons the machines are down is due to minor issues which could be resolved by staff.

Here in India, I've worked in few outlets In Delhi and Jaipur where Ice cream sections were built in a separate section and none of the machine had Taylor branding on them. we're using local suppliers. Never had any breakdown, even during peak hours.

I had a friend who got hired at a McDonald's in the last half of our senior year of high school. She quit after a month but told our friend group after her second shift that they were telling people the machine was broken just so they didn't have to clean it. She advised never ordering ice cream because even when it "wasn't broken" it wasn't cleaned.

You're forgetting one important detail on the repair service stuff Mat: McD does not pay Taylor, the franchisee does. Enforcing the use of Ice-cream machines with frequent breakdowns costs McD corporate literally nothing, but brings their partner Taylor more revenue.

I work at McDonald’s and I must say the machine is never broken, it’s just doing it’s daily cleaning process. But for some reason we are told by managers to tell customers that it is broken instead of saying that it’s being cleaned. I mean, I’m sure customers would be more understanding if we jus told them the machine was being cleaned😫🤣

As a previous employee of McD's, there is a FEW ways to "fix" some of the errors. When the machine has a heat cycle error all you had to do to fix it is just turn it off and back on after being turned off for 20 seconds. ALSO SCREW THE FUDGE PUMPS! THEY ARE THE WORST

the place where I worked had two of these, the machine is complicated for untrained personal, most of the problems are caused by employees. Also, if you cut the power it iniciates the 4hr sterilizing cycle.

Before I even watch the video I can already tell it’s going to be because McDonald’s wants you to come for the soft serve (which isn’t expensive ), but then when the machine is broken you buy something else on the menu that costs more.

I remember reading about this idea someone had on a conspiracy website, stating how tech companies intentionally make their designs break so they can charge you to fix it. Take Apple, for example. The person suggests those lovely little software updates wear and tear at your phone, and guess what? You can trade your barely working phone for a new iPhone for just (insert amount here). There's no official proof, but Microsoft has started to weld computer parts to the frame, making it impossible to fix at home. IDK what to say. I mean, it's just a theory! A TECH THEORY! And, shut down

Our ice cream machine always works at my McDonald’s. But when I am short staffed and already covering the positions of 3 people I just don’t have the time to make ice cream for every order, so I just tell the customers that it’s down for cleaning.

I also recommend Johnny Harris' video on this. It has the same format in the beginning and goes a little bit more in depth about the technical side. But ultimately concludes that Taylor earns more from fixing the machines than selling any tech, so their partnership with McDonalds allows the company to continually scan the returns owners out of more money.
