Doesn't have to be a proper "farm" it could be an algae and/or yeast bank. It wouldn't resemble the upright "plant" and in the automated bowls of the ship illuminated by the glow of the reactor no human would ever have reason to see it. As to why not everything tastes or looks like algae and nutritional yeast flakes, the wonders of artificial flavour and colour, essentially what most of our packaged food is now. A cheap starch with the desired flavour and colour, with just enough synthetic vitamins added for legal requirement to be considered food. Serving it as a shake skips a step. Where is the material to fertilise the algae and/or yeast farms come from? Could be almost anything from harvested space dust, frozen chunks of Kuiper Belt ammonia, wastewater treatment, or even the missing bodies. But B&L is not that adept at recycling, so I doubt they would actually recycle much of the ship's resources. It would be more like them to mine the materials from space to make food out of.

@EP they want to dispose of the plant from earth because it’s shifting focus. Simple easy answer for that. Also he still leaves the same huge plot hole in his theory. The humans would be burning calories (wasted energy for the next generation) and they would need to consume more than he mentioned. He didn’t get into how although the humans are big and therefore worth more calories than the average person on earth today, they would need to get big first, so they would need to consume a lot of calories before going for the minimal amount of calories per day. For his therapy to work we would have to reuse energy which is impossible.

you cant exactly make coffee out of people, and that was present in the movie. So I imagine along with coffee beans they're also growing other plants. I doubt the people are the ones actually growing plants, so they likely don't know much about plants because the robots are doing it for them.

While I do think that's a good argument for creating doubts around the topic and raising the stakes for alternatives, I still think it's quite weak in the way of disproving the theory. It is made clear that: 1) the captain actually doesn't know much about the inner workings of the ship; 2) the machines withhold classified information from the captain and make decisions on their on; Therefore, it is entirely plausible that the idea of a "regenerative food buffet" - which is quite vague, I must point out - could be just another palatable piece of information provided to the captain by robots seeking to maintain the humans under "blissful ignorance" to avoid conflict. Another thing that does make me lean toward the recycling of bodies idea is the fact that the captain does not recognize whata plant looks like or how they work; merely cloning plants would make them an integral part of the ship and, therefore, something that the captain would likely know about, if not the whole population (as it would make for an interesting excursion for kids during their education years). Cloning only animals would not make sense, as they would still need to feed those animals, and then again we are left with two options: cloning plants to feed them (which would again incur in a more known business altogether for the reasons stated above), or, more likely, feed the recycled human bodies to those animals, creating an infinite cycle of poorer and poorer calories. Another very important thing to consider is that, despite our innate disgust of cannibalism, it would be the best possible use of the bodies of the deceased, as simply burning them would be, quite literally, a waste. More than one case in humanity has proven that, when needed, we may resort to that and survive. It would not be a wild leap for machines to make that decision, or even for some high-ranking humans to approve of it.

I don’t understand why people are saying “this is a Pixar movie…”, Wall-E came out in 2008, Disney had purchased Pixar in 2006. It's technically NOT from nowhere... they have a kind of 'foodstuff' nutrient base on board that's converted into whatever food someone wants via the replicator system, which in turn uses transporter technology to suspend the matter, and rearrange it to replicate the flavor and texture of whatever you order. The Next Generation Technical Manual I have here goes into great detail about the special waveguide conduits used to transport the foodstuff matter from special holding facilities and into the replicators for rearrangement into the pattern of whatever food was requested.

@Fizel Shiba It does break the laws of thermodynamics. Everytime you convert energy, e.g. by breaking chemical bonds, you loose energy that is released as heat. So, in order to maintain ppl eating off of eachother, you somehow need to add that same energy back in the form of chemical bonds. The 2nd problem is that ppl respirate. When we breathe, we oxidise carbon compounds to carbon dioxie. I.e. we loose mass as we breathe. In order to tackle both these problems you would need to 1. either get a carbon source from somewhere else, e.g. meteorites or 2. use carbon dioxide capture technology or a combination of both. Then you need to synthesise it into digestible carbon compounds, like sugar, with the energy for the reaction coming from e.g. the nuclear fission/fusion generator. Then there are also other problems, like e.g. the ppls waste products. For example we turn ammonia into urea as cells die. Which would need to be synthesized back into compounds like amino acids. So Matt is right, but there's a lot more to recycling humans as first seems, for which you need better technology than we currently have, which the AI also would have to develop itself, or bring from earth. So essentially it would, most likely, also have to do automated scientific research.

True, but they also have magical chairs that could change their outward appearance. Since everyone is the same size (roughly), no one would be worried about looking obese. However, elderly people would move just as well as the middle age and younger passengers, so why wouldn't they change their outward appearance to look young like them. Like we use make up and face lifts to look young nowadays, in the movie they would use science and technology to look younger more efficiently. That doesn't explain why we still don't see any elderly people towards the end of the movie when they repopulate the earth, but it could explain why no elders were outwardly present on the ship.
