Wall-E is one of my all time favorite movies, cheering me up even when I'm in the worst of moods. But the other night when watching it, between the many moments of manly weeping, I came to a horrible realization - Cupcake-in-a-Cup is People! IT'S PEOPLE! I mean where else would their food be coming from? Now you're saying MatPat that seems a little dark, maybe even far fetched; and, I wish you were right. But unfortunately, I'm here to prove it to you.

You also forgot at the beginning, they were eating solid foods, not stuff in a cup, which further proves this theory, because they were originally eating solid foods, not humans, and now they're just sipping from a cup.

They might be eating liquid foods since their bodies literally broken down and fattened up without having true proteins and required daily bodily exercise.

In Wall-E, when the captain wakes up and realizes that it's lunch time, then changes the time to morning, he checks all of the systems. one of these systems include a regenerative buffet. The captain asks about it, and auto tells him that it's clear. That means there's a regenerative buffet that "regenerates food" for a spaceship that they planned would last more than 5 years. In the movie, there's a video where the person on the video talks to auto saying that if life is found on Earth, he should send it away and prevent the humans from returning to Earth. This means that BnL planned for the spaceship would last for far more than 5 years. Therefore, the people aren't eating the dead people of the past. also how do the people make babies if they're always sitting

Alternate theory: since MatPat even said that the capt was incompetent, maybe the robots automate a veggie farm, and the bodies, like Mat said, could’ve easily been burnt, therefore no cannibalism
ckl Anos atrás
Doesn't have to be a proper "farm" it could be an algae and/or yeast bank. It wouldn't resemble the upright "plant" and in the automated bowls of the ship illuminated by the glow of the reactor no human would ever have reason to see it. As to why not everything tastes or looks like algae and nutritional yeast flakes, the wonders of artificial flavour and colour, essentially what most of our packaged food is now. A cheap starch with the desired flavour and colour, with just enough synthetic vitamins added for legal requirement to be considered food. Serving it as a shake skips a step. Where is the material to fertilise the algae and/or yeast farms come from? Could be almost anything from harvested space dust, frozen chunks of Kuiper Belt ammonia, wastewater treatment, or even the missing bodies. But B&L is not that adept at recycling, so I doubt they would actually recycle much of the ship's resources. It would be more like them to mine the materials from space to make food out of.

@Harrison Baylor wouldn’t the regeneration place make energy?
Harrison Baylor
Harrison Baylor Anos atrás
@EP they want to dispose of the plant from earth because it’s shifting focus. Simple easy answer for that. Also he still leaves the same huge plot hole in his theory. The humans would be burning calories (wasted energy for the next generation) and they would need to consume more than he mentioned. He didn’t get into how although the humans are big and therefore worth more calories than the average person on earth today, they would need to get big first, so they would need to consume a lot of calories before going for the minimal amount of calories per day. For his therapy to work we would have to reuse energy which is impossible.

you cant exactly make coffee out of people, and that was present in the movie. So I imagine along with coffee beans they're also growing other plants. I doubt the people are the ones actually growing plants, so they likely don't know much about plants because the robots are doing it for them.

Well, there are a few things that were completely left out, so most likely the food comes from plants. 1. You still need to create Oxygen. Of course they could create Oxygen with water, but they would still need to deal with the hydrogen. Also they need to deal with the CO2 create by the humans. So either they just dump it out into space, leaving solid junks of CO2 floating trough space, or they have plants that use the CO2 to create Oxygen. 2. The calories don't just create themselves. A human uses calories just by existing. So with every "cycle" of a human dying, getting turned into food and than getting eaten until the consumer dies you will loose quite a lot of calories. If we say that the humans are mostly inactive and are actually gaining weight we can go with an average intake of 2.500 calories a day per human (The average daily consumption over the whole life). With a lifespan of up to 200 years like said we can go with 150 years. So every human on board would need around 109.500.000 calories trough their whole life. This would mean that to feed one human they would need around 1.368 dead humans (going from 80.000 calories per human). So if we simplify this very much and say the food lastet the first generation of humans until their death and second generation also consists of exactly 600.000 humans than the third generation could only be around 438 humans. So unless there is a human slaughterhouse on the ship that kills a lot of humans before their natural lifespan it is most likely that the dead body's are used as fertilizer to grow plants.

Two things: First, along with matpat was talking about with the weight, there are HUGE signs telling everyone to EAT. Probably inorder to get everyone bulking up like common animals on earth, ie. Pigs, cows and chicken. Second is a question. Are they saying that people use to look like how we look like "realistic" but they turn into people that are animated. Because when it shows the "president" talking about earth they are realistic looking but in the movie all humans are "animated"

Reason why there ISNT cannibalism: In the scene where the captain wakes up, he says the following: Captain: Regenerative food buffet? Computer: Unchanged. This means they are cloning food to have an infinite supply of it.

While I do think that's a good argument for creating doubts around the topic and raising the stakes for alternatives, I still think it's quite weak in the way of disproving the theory. It is made clear that: 1) the captain actually doesn't know much about the inner workings of the ship; 2) the machines withhold classified information from the captain and make decisions on their on; Therefore, it is entirely plausible that the idea of a "regenerative food buffet" - which is quite vague, I must point out - could be just another palatable piece of information provided to the captain by robots seeking to maintain the humans under "blissful ignorance" to avoid conflict. Another thing that does make me lean toward the recycling of bodies idea is the fact that the captain does not recognize whata plant looks like or how they work; merely cloning plants would make them an integral part of the ship and, therefore, something that the captain would likely know about, if not the whole population (as it would make for an interesting excursion for kids during their education years). Cloning only animals would not make sense, as they would still need to feed those animals, and then again we are left with two options: cloning plants to feed them (which would again incur in a more known business altogether for the reasons stated above), or, more likely, feed the recycled human bodies to those animals, creating an infinite cycle of poorer and poorer calories. Another very important thing to consider is that, despite our innate disgust of cannibalism, it would be the best possible use of the bodies of the deceased, as simply burning them would be, quite literally, a waste. More than one case in humanity has proven that, when needed, we may resort to that and survive. It would not be a wild leap for machines to make that decision, or even for some high-ranking humans to approve of it.

TimeMasterXX222 Anos atrás
@Forbes well not necessarily since they have become lazy its likely that the food would be changed to a drink to make life easier
Forbes Anos atrás
Good point but they were clearly having solid food when they first came aboard the axiom as shown in multiple clips, So, if they did have a system that managed to clone food somehow they would still be eating the same solid food instead of drinking a shady substance through a straw.

I don’t understand why people are saying “this is a Pixar movie…”, Wall-E came out in 2008, Disney had purchased Pixar in 2006. And even before Disney bought Pixar, Disney had a deep relationship with Pixar before then (2006). Pixar’s first major movie is Toy Story, with Disney’s involvement, which came out in 1995, and since then, Pixar has worked with Disney. I can’t think of a Pixar movie that Disney didn’t have involvement with. Before Pixar was purchased by Disney, Pixar was like an unofficial part of Disney. It was only inevitable that Pixar became a Disney subsidiary. So for the “it’s a Pixar movie” folks, y’all ain’t looking to bright, Pixar=Disney. Pixar was originally from Lucasfilm, but Disney now owns Lucasfilms. But before Pixar was purchased by Disney, Pixar separated from Lucasfilms, and became an independent company until 2006 when Disney purchased Pixar. For a while (before Disney purchased Pixar) Steve Jobs was a major investor in the company, hence why Steve Jobs has the co-founder title for Pixar. Pixar split from Lucasfilms and became its own company which happened way before Toy Story. If you can think of a Pixar movie after the early 1990s, just know, that, that movie had Disney’s involvement. Toy Story (1995), Monsters Inc (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), and so on, all had Disney’s involvement.

It's technically NOT from nowhere... they have a kind of 'foodstuff' nutrient base on board that's converted into whatever food someone wants via the replicator system, which in turn uses transporter technology to suspend the matter, and rearrange it to replicate the flavor and texture of whatever you order. The Next Generation Technical Manual I have here goes into great detail about the special waveguide conduits used to transport the foodstuff matter from special holding facilities and into the replicators for rearrangement into the pattern of whatever food was requested.

The problem with cannibalism as a food source for the axiom is that because even though they do not move very much, they still use energy, and they would eventually run out of food as the humans would have to consume more food than the dead bodies can provide.
꓅ꂑ꓅ꋫꁹ 9 meses atrás
@Fizel Shiba It does break the laws of thermodynamics. Everytime you convert energy, e.g. by breaking chemical bonds, you loose energy that is released as heat. So, in order to maintain ppl eating off of eachother, you somehow need to add that same energy back in the form of chemical bonds. The 2nd problem is that ppl respirate. When we breathe, we oxidise carbon compounds to carbon dioxie. I.e. we loose mass as we breathe. In order to tackle both these problems you would need to 1. either get a carbon source from somewhere else, e.g. meteorites or 2. use carbon dioxide capture technology or a combination of both. Then you need to synthesise it into digestible carbon compounds, like sugar, with the energy for the reaction coming from e.g. the nuclear fission/fusion generator. Then there are also other problems, like e.g. the ppls waste products. For example we turn ammonia into urea as cells die. Which would need to be synthesized back into compounds like amino acids. So Matt is right, but there's a lot more to recycling humans as first seems, for which you need better technology than we currently have, which the AI also would have to develop itself, or bring from earth. So essentially it would, most likely, also have to do automated scientific research.
ProfessorPrel 10 meses atrás

My own thought is that the original planners of the axiom, bnl, probably hid plants and other animals and farms, so the passengers could eat, but not be reminded of home. Auto, later in probably made food easier to eat by making it drinkable. The one thing to remember is that auto was still made by humans, and farms would be thought of for sustinence of the passengers. For the corpses could have been left in space. It's morbid, but it could be done. Ik it still doesn't explain the absence of old people but it's my theory. Feel free to add on Edit: the people in the axiom have families and they would probably notice if someone died, so when the notice that there are no old ppl anywhere, it would cause a problem to everyone and threaten a113 directive
Vsaucefan78 2 anos atrás
The logic is that there arent any farms because the captain doesnt know what a plant was, but Otto controls anything, so there could be farms. And you also say that no human would agree to cannibalism, so in this theory, Otto could cover up an entire food production line, like Otto could cover up farms and livestock. Also, humans cant survive off of just meat, so there would need to be farms of some sort for them to survive, even in this theory.

one problem with this whole theory apparently the axiom has something called a "regenerating buffet" during the scene where the captain wakes up for the first time while it is true that they'd have to get rid of their dead but I don't think a place with advanced technology would be so short sighted to have a protocol for the autopilot to not return if there wasn't ample supplies my guess is the food in a cup is just gruel or some slop that's flavored like food

Sooo, I absolutely love you Mattpat. I subscribe to all the channels and tell everyone to watch. Best BRvid channels ever, food theory was a great idea btw. So my girlfriend watches this for like 5 minutes and goes, they are using a cloning machine.

So for the food one it’s explained, it’s a regenerative process. In the beginning when the captain does his morning check routine you can see it
another fact: at the beginning (before the events when they still look human) they had REAL food instead of the human flesh
Stella Anos atrás
The first thing that the Axiom "cuisine" reminded me of was the Neo Seoul scenes from "Cloud Atlas", where Sonmi~451 and the other clones were drinking soap, which later turned out to made of be the dead corpses of the clones...
I feel like matpat has a giant picker wall, spins it, then throws a dart on a property and research’s it to see if it has hidden lore.

My theory: There must be a farm or greenhouse somewhere on the ship producing food and also oxygen for the ship. The humans wouldn't know about it, since the robots run everything. Dead bodies and feces would be used as fertilizer.

Do you think Mat Pat tells his son these theories when they watch Disney/Pixar movies?
Hottox 11 meses atrás
I feel like the non-cannibal solution to the food problem would be to farm for food. Its basically a closed environment so the nutrients won't go anywhere (unless thrown into space). They could use corpses and feces as fertilizer to feed the plants, and use the plants to feed the people. Wouldn't solve the problem, but it would help.

I'll be honest. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought this was about how WALL-E salvages parts from other dead WALL-E units to replace his aging parts. I thought this would be about something like, WALL-E is the last remaining unit because they resorted to taking other units parts to repair themselves like a survival of the fittest situation. This theory wasn't what I thought, but still made me think. Good vid.

The only problem I see with this theory is that the Axiom’s captain (while going over the ship’s systems in the status report), mentions a regenerative food buffet in the ships systems. This indicates that the ship is using some form of replication technology (similar to that seen in Star Trek.) This replication technology can take any raw material, (human waste, or possible Kiper belt materials) and turn these materials into food, by re-arranging their atomic/molecular makeup, therefore not needing to resort to cannibalism. And the reason the people get their daily nutrition through drinking smoothies, is because they physically can’t chew anymore due to them being physically inactive or they just forgot how to. But that is just how I see it.

by the way, there is also not a single scene where you see a single person with grey hair or dry skin. that could mean two things. Either they don't grow old, which is not the case considering the fact that there have been several captains, or, it could mean that something happens before the human reaches a certain age...

True, but they also have magical chairs that could change their outward appearance. Since everyone is the same size (roughly), no one would be worried about looking obese. However, elderly people would move just as well as the middle age and younger passengers, so why wouldn't they change their outward appearance to look young like them. Like we use make up and face lifts to look young nowadays, in the movie they would use science and technology to look younger more efficiently. That doesn't explain why we still don't see any elderly people towards the end of the movie when they repopulate the earth, but it could explain why no elders were outwardly present on the ship.

My theory of why they would have so much stored food or back up plans is that by and large had intentions of keeping all of civilization up there as a way to take it over and take control this would also explain why they were in space so much longer than initially intended.

matpat you disproved your own theory, theyre clearly growing plants on the axium because the captain is drinking coffee everything else is probably also another form of plant and the corpeses are burned to ash

@Kenny Negron robots can very clearly lie in the wall-e universe. As matpat pointed out auto pilot did this in secret to prevent people from finding out and attempting to go back to earth. Of course the earlier occupants may not have been stupid so he had to have an excuse to feed them so that they wouldn't ask questions. Much like yourself they bought regenerative food buffet without. Second thought. And also as he pointed out regenerating food would require plants they don't have. The theory is sound.

This was one of my favorite movies of all time. If the developers of Wall-E actually intended to have all these hints to show cannibalism, I think this may be my favorite movie again. That would be one of the darkest implications I have ever seen in a movie without anyone picking up on it for years. xD
