In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Washington Football Team was picking second overall. They just came off a miserable 3 and 13 season and one of the best players from college, Chase Young, was staring at them at a position that they didn’t necessarily need. They already had Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat as their edge rushers. They also had Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Matt Ioannidis on their defensive line as well. Clearly taking Chase Young was far from a need…. However, with him being debatably the best player in the entire draft, Ron Rivera simply couldn’t pass on him. His pure talent and upside all showcased at Ohio State definitely made him worthy of the second overall pick.

Now that we’re 14 weeks into the regular season, I wanted to breakdown his rookie season. I wanted to talk about what he’s doing well. I want to talk about what he still needs to work on. And I also want to give my case as to why I think Chase Young should win this season’s defensive rookie of the year. In my opinion, Chase Young is the Next Great Edge Rusher for the Washington Football Team.

Chase is his own man but the one thing I notice about Chase and Sean Taylor is that they both were bigger than the game when they are on the field. He has the attitude and drive you want in DE.

Totally agree with you, even on your constructive criticisms. Young still needs some tools in his kit when dealing with hand placement and setting up his pass rush better. His exceptional physical abilities will only go so far over time, he has the ability to be dominant and a game changer consistently. He did so a few times already this year but he could be even more dangerous!

Even his worst 2 or 3 games when he got double teamed by blockers were decent and in those games montez sweat and the interior defensive lineman in Jonathan Allen and Darron Payne had great game's because Chase Young was focused on by the blocking scheme on opposing offense

As a Cowboys fan with an ever so crumbling OL, Chase Young scares me so much; however, I always wonder if I'd be more afraid of Herbert instead. Love your channel man keep up the great work!

As a cowboys fan I see what moves the rivalries in the division make. When I saw that washington got coach rivera I knew the defense would be better. Then after seeing them get chase young I knew they were gonna have a top 5 defense front 7 due to the dline.

Plays the game with motor and intensity. Understands his assignments and does it very well, one thing that stands out as well is his presnap read on the offense. I might not make sense.. but i see him making adjustments on thr line b4 snap

@bowlchamps37 That was because they doubled him a lot with a bunch of chips, which is smart. But what did that do for the rest of the Washington defense? They were 6th in sacks. Most TOP pass rushers coming out of college struggle with those doubles, chips, and even top linemen at first. J J Watt, Aaron Donald, Clowney, and many more had a worse rookie year than Chase did. Von Miller had an excellent rookie year though, but nothing compared to his sophomore year.

If we compare overall grades and the performance over the last couple of weeks then Kamren Curl would have to be in consideration as well. He has a higher overall grade and a higher grade over the last couple of weeks than Chinn and they play the same position. Not to take anything away from Chinn but no opponent is currently game planning around Chinn while you very clearly see that teams specifically focus on Chase Young.

Shit hot take on Young's last year at Ohio State. It doesn't matter how hard you play when every single team each week is game planning against a single person. Constant double teams, sometimes triple-teamed. Quick hitting passes that don't give the rush time to get there, etc... Just not having the same numbers he had his second year doesn't mean he wasn't going hard. All the attention teams paid to him opened up the other side of the line.

Don’t typically agree with the cons of chase young I mean he got double teamed and triple teamed at times. With Williams being top 3-5 best LT in the league that was a harsh part to the video especially when young got to the QB. Coming from a skins fan so maybe I’m biased but decent video. For those of y'all who aren't familiar with Washington, Matt Ioannidis was our best linemen last season - he had a season ending injury early this season. So yeah...our D-line during the 2021 season might be better than the 2019 Niners.

I'm an Ohio State fan and honestly if you truly studied the film from his last yr at OSU you would know he never lacked effort or drive, and always made plays when we needed him to the most. If you looked over the film you can easily see that he was double teamed almost every single play of every single game with some exceptions where very bad teams would actually triple team him. It was the fact that he was so good that they had no other choice but to basically remove him from the game by double and triple teaming him which lead to the decline in numbers that yr which made it appear that he had an awful yr. This is also the reason for his great start in the nfl, in the nfl you rarely get double teamed and triple teamed dont really happen at that level mostly bc everyone is supposed to be at about the same level so they would expect you to be able to contain/block him on your own. Not trying to hate on you, I just believe your description of his final year is not accurate at all. Also great video and thanks for putting together the highlight package as I havent seen many games this yr.

As a wft fan and chase young supporter that was the worst argument for chase to be DROY😂. You basically said yeah some of his stats are worse and Chinn has played better recently but yeah chase is just better lmao. Unfortunately Chase doesn't fill up the stat sheet but he definitely is better when u just watch the two of them. Hopefully he does win it.

Stats don’t lie but they don’t tell the whole story. You gotta remember 2.5 sacks were called back on penalty’s that weren’t his fault as well. He’s a rookie being double teamed like crazy and came in on a COVID off season with all new coaches and schemes. It takes 99.99% of great people a while to be great. Not to mention the rest of our DLINE is good too so they are naturally going to take some sacks away.

I love Chase but I rarely see him get around the edge. People are like "but he's always double teamed" Sure, but when he's one on one he gets pushed upfield away from the qb or his bull rush doesn't get there in time. He has only 2 quality sacks, one vs Peters where the RB actually helped Chase more than he did Peters, and a sack against a backup tackle from Dallas. He has 2 sacks where the qb had already given himself up behind the line and a sack where he faked a rush, then came in free against Mullens. I want this guy to be better than Myles Garret. I hope he watches tape on him this offseason. I don't see Chase using his hands like he did in college. In all honesty he looks like Clowney 2.0. I know he's a rookie and I know guys like JJ WATT only had 5 sacks his rookie year so i'm hopeful. I just wanted him to light it up sack wise for his rookie year. I hope next year he takes a huge leap. Also he hasn't faced a decent tackle except Williams who stonewalled him, and the same against Andrew Thomas.

@NeverTalkToCops1 How do you measure that? However, Clowney is significantly lazier. Young is what people hoped Clowney would be when he came out. Same physical gifts but with a huge motor and desire to be the best. Something Clowney never really demonstrated.
