And in 3 years, 10th will be a carbon copy of the state of 9th now. bloated, boring and very hard to get into for beginners. The eternal cycle since 5-6th edition.

Unfortunately it feels too beginner friendly, with no thought to veterans. I wished they had done two versions like with points costs, a simple one for new players and a more in depth one for vets.

Overall it looks like GW are tackling the rules reset very intelligently. But man the new Datasheets are so much more ergonomic and easy on the eyes to quickly glance at and read. I can already tell changing the data sheets the way they have is going to save on a lot of time when just looking at them. The choice to completely overhaul stratagems and add more reaction like rules attached to Datasheets will fix so much bloat while also allowing a more interactive game experience for both players on each other's turns which is something I was really hoping for. Them making the new rules free initially is an excellent choice! I think most of the changes look phenomenal and I'm very excited!
Manlio Cipullo
Manlio Cipullo 2 meses atrás
To me they look too bland, basically they are mixing the psychic phase in every other phases, making it more difficult to remember when you have to use a specific psychic power. Datasheets should have all the rules, instead of referring just the ones of the specific unit, stratagem included (to make easier for any player reading the rules without consulting the codex). The only thing i think that is positive is reducing the stratagems, but we have to see how far they are truly going. Overall i was hoping less dice rolls, like erasing the wound roll, but no, it is still bloated as hell. Also a three year cycle is becoming too short, while codexes are going to be published at the end of the rope basically, becoming useless in less than a year... I think my group at FLG will play Grimdark Future next years too, if those are the changes in 10th edition (i would have accepted the short life cycle of codexes and such if they had a very bold change in the rules, but it is unlikely, so).

I’d like the rules to be free permenantly because that would bring in those who don’t want to buy new rule books every time there is an update and make them more sales for models because of more coming in from the free rules
Alistair Bover
Alistair Bover 2 meses atrás
@Manlio Cipullo I disagree - I personally like the idea of having a data sheet for only a single unit, means I can print them out individually and then only use the ones I need for the units I've taken in that game, rather than having to look down an entire list. The psychic powers I think will depend - most armies will remember just fine, but more psyker heavy armies (GK, TS, etc.) might find it more of an issue. However I never liked the idea of a separate psychic phase anyway, so am not sad to see that going. Completely agree with the strategems though - it's the one thing that's put me off playing more than a handful of games of 9th is I just can't be bothered to try and remember all that stupid bookkeeping! I think the removal of the 'to wound' roll would have been unnecessary. I would have learned to live without it if that's the direction they chose to go, but I don't believe 40k has an issue with 'too many dice' but rather an issue with 'too many rules affecting the dice'. If they can move back to a 'this page tells you what to roll' and then you can roll them, that's already simplified enough imo. Do agree with the short life span of codicies though, even speaking as a Marine player and I know mine will be the first each time we roll around.
LowlyGrinder
LowlyGrinder 2 meses atrás
They're just dumbing the rules down like Age of Sigmar, I hate putting stats on the weapons instead of the unit, it's not hard to remember a model with strength 3 using a +1 weapon is now strength 4. Now the same weapons are going to have varied stats depending on who is using them, whereas before they had the same stat and it was the unit that was different, this made the units feel different from each other, when I look at AOS rules I have no idea if the unit has high strength or the weapon has high strength, are Stormcast's swords powerful or are they just normal swords and the strength comes solely from the Stormcast? I have no idea. Age of Sigmar never felt like your model and their weapon were seperate things. All this done to entice the new players who are going to get bored of these simplified rules once they become more veteran at the game. They could have at least had two sets of rules, like they do with points costs, one for the children with ADHD who are latching onto 40k as a fad, and one for people who actually play the game and will continue to. Hell they could have just kept Strength, attacks and weapon skill on the model statline, and also just had the weapon statline on the models datacard just have everything added already, and state that it's all added up, but then also have another page with the weapons on their own with no stats added to them.
Alistair Bover
Alistair Bover 2 meses atrás
@LowlyGrinder You see dumbing down, I see simplifying. Personally I don’t care whether they list is S3+1 or S4, but the latter is less likely to result in rules confusion or misplays. Besides which I think there’s an argument that sometimes the same weapon should give different bonuses. A power axe is going to do, even proportionately, way more damage from a marine than it would a guardsman. Just giving it +2s is, arguably, ‘dumbing it down’. Also, you can hardly fault GW for aiming their game at kids - it’s their primary market and has been since I worked at the company back in 2008! The fact that AoS sells way more than WFB does proves that this is the right decision for them financially, even if I personally preferred WFB over AoS. If you want a detailed, intricate war game, GW is not to the company for you. And arguably hasn’t been since the early 2000s. There are plenty of others out there, many of them extremely fun to play. But GW aren’t going to be making it anytime soon, so I’d stop hoping for it to change, because it ain’t gonna.

Was thinking the exact same thing here. I think breaking down a pure Psychic phase into the other phases isn't a big deal: the Blessings/Maledictions will probably end up in the Command phase and the Smite/Witchfire will end up in the Shooting phase. There probably will be some ability to counter/evade some of the psychic powers, so this could be quite interactive for the opposing player (this was always 1 of my worries playing TS. My Psychic phase could go on for ages and my opponent would basically end up falling asleep for the entire phase if they had no Psyker to counter anything).

My thoughts exactly. Order of events is going to be incredibly important for witchfire powers. I'm guessing either... A) Select unit, cast power(s), shoot, and then move on to next unit. B) Select unit, cast power(s), move on to next unit. Once all powers are casted, shoot as per usual.

Honestly, meaningful combat patrol boxes that are evenly matched is such a solid idea. They should have that for AOS as well. I know there’s a lot of joy in figuring out how to cobble together an army list from various random boxes, but a good starting set you can expand on is so so nice.

So happy with the changes that have been announced, and super happy with the idea that your entire army's rules will be on a single sheet, and if you want to play a different company or chapter, you just change the sheet, so you always have just 1 sheet. No more lugging 47 rulebooks around. The new datasheets look so clean and easy to read, I love them so much.

The Combat Patrol game mode is EXACTLY what I was looking for to get into the tabletop. I've always wanted to start playing for a while, but for one reason or another, I've been hesitant to make the jump. Think one of these boxes will be perfect now! GW is def making solid moves by pushing for a more accessible and trimmed game. Great stuff, Auspex!

Crusade is, by far, my favorite way to play. Having a Spartan crush a Chaos Rhino when hitting on 2+ in melee is just the kind of hilarity you read about in the books, especially when the Rhino explodes and takes the Spartan with it. Competitive is cool if you want to get in to the nitty-gritty of playing, but Crusade has hit a nice balance between casual one-off games and invested play, so I'm glad to see that it's continuing on in 10th.

There was some talk from a leak about primaris being able to use rhinos and drop pods in 10th due to keywords getting streamlined. I hope this is true. It still seems possible.
sonicwingnut
sonicwingnut 2 meses atrás
I suspect they will just remove the Primaris keyword - so lore-wise units like the Phobos or Gravis stuff is still technically primaris-only, but they can update/upscale specialist units like Sanguinary Guard without having to have 2 entirely different sets of rules or invalidate current players' existing models for use in the game. At the same time they can discontinue the older model kits as they no longer have to support firstborn specialist units when there's a primaris kit out.
Smilomaniac
Smilomaniac 2 meses atrás
I have no idea what to feel lol I've specifically asked for "primaris" as a word not to exist anymore, meaning that they just call them all 'space marines', but now that both use terminator suits it scrambles my logic. I think this is what I want, but it also kind of smells like they're still phasing out the other armors and just keeping terminators. If you note, the winged skull chest emblem is more of a primaris thing - It was on some terminators, but not all of them, they had variety. They're on ALL primaris which is one of the reasons I don't like their designs.

This is all great news. Love the Terminator models - thrilled that they haven't messed about with the original concept. New Termagants look great - not radically different to the originals so you'd probably be able to blend them into your force pretty well. 10th edition...wow, massive sigh of relief!! So glad to see Toughness there and I love the way they have just streamlined things like WS and BS into the weapon profile... makes a ton of sense. I love the cut-down on stratagems, the return to placing rules back into datasheets and culling AP back down again; it's like returning to a refined 8th edition; brilliant!

The AoO release seems to me to have been a play test and public polling exercise for the new army selection rules. I do also think we will see a new edition of Space Hulk soon, what with boarding patrol and these new sculps. Again, I apply the logic that GW tests the water and plans ahead to make 'new' releases as popular and less costly to them, as is possible

I'm super excited for these changes. Fewer stratagems seems good to me, and I like how the power is shifting to the individual units themselves. I also like psychic/morale, and I hope that whatever they end up doing speeds the game up a bit.
R Martinson

I'm feeling pretty optimistic, and I really like the re-designed datasheets. However, I do wonder how simplifying the rules and paring down the stratagems will affect more complicated factions like my AdMech army. AdMech already suffers from a crippling lack of strong HQ units, that it compensates for with lots of overlapping buffs and ways to synergize different rules with each other. It's honestly kind of a pain in the ass to play them effectively, requiring a whole lot more thought put into positioning and timing than other armies like Space Marines. But now I'm mildly concerned that in simplifying things, they may not account for the way the bloated proliferation of faction rules is single-handedly keeping a few 40k factions afloat.
WilliamMarshal

I am also an admech player, but I am not worried that they will overlook the design of admech. I am looking forward to admech with a non painful rule set.
Emperor Mintoff
Emperor Mintoff 2 meses atrás
As another admech player. I'll take some more simplification as opposed to how the army plays right now. A command phase almost aslong as the shooting phase just so that the army stands a modest chance at winning. I think what they should do is simply make the tech priests stronger overall. Right now they have 0 kill potential. We have a marshall as a buffing character so to speak so some hqs should be able to be more balanced. my 2c.
WilliamMarshal
WilliamMarshal 2 meses atrás
@Emperor Mintoff It’s ok to have characters buff focused rather than combat focused. They could make our characters have actually good guns, that would be really distinct. Our problem is more to do with needing to layer buffs on mediocre datasheets.

Also not against keeping characters as buffing characters. Either make relic weapons useful or as you say make the weapons more deadly. That transonic canon looks like it can melt a few bugs 😅

They are just reducing the stratagems, they are not simplifying the rules, spreading the psychic phase in the others makes it more complicated, not less... I was hoping a redesign of the rules, the wound roll gone was my dream to make the game more approchable and fast, but no... It is the same with some tweeks that are not so bold to justify a short life cycle like this...

Datasheet redesign is nice.. Weapon and toughness changes seem like a good move to help balance a d6 based game.. - Overall - the base point for the new game seems like it's well thought out and will be easier to get into. My only concern is that 9th also seemed to be a step in the right direction at day 0, and that quickly went crazy..

I think every new edition works like that. 6th edition seemed really awesome until they started writing codexes for it and showed zero restraint. The core rules have rarely been the problem; it's the codexes.

im interested to see how they plan to balance combat patrols. currently there is a huge variation in the points values included in these boxes, as well as the viability of everything in the box. for example, the custodes combat patrol comes out to like 700 points in total, versus something like the tyranid or eldar combat patrol which barely scrapes 500.

They will have a completely separate datasheet ecosystem compared to 'regular' 40k. So Custodes Combat Patrol datasheets might not include some of the special abilities that the units will have in 'regular' 40k, for example, while termagants might have an additional special rule or two to give them an edge. That being said, while I hope it's gonna be good, I expect this 'Combat Patrol Game Mode' will, at the end of the day, just be a set of throwaway datasheets intended for beginners that doesn't get much traction beyond being an introductory thing for the first couple games for newbies. Which in itself isn't a bad thing, 40k has a problem with onboarding new players, but I can't imagine the game mode catching on in a wider context.

This might be an unwanted feature but I've got an idea that could make their app interesting. After you create your army in the app it can produce it as a QR code that can be imported as an enemy army. You could then automate rolling by selecting your unit, their weapon profile, the number firing, and their target. It would then produce the number wounded/killed with the details on individual rolls available if the action was highlighted.

I was basically wanting everything with the data sheet changes. I love the shift of WS and BS to the actual weapon. Changing weapons from "assault 3" to just a number of shots plus a few tags seems more streamlined. Individual datasheet abilities instead of stratagems seems like a great idea. Lastly, I could see the "OC" system being a bit fiddly (let's say you have to count up the Objective Count of all your modals vs your opponents, that might be a bit more time consuming and prone to error, but I think it could fix a few problems so I like the idea)
Retrosicotte

I'm not too big a fan of moving them to the weapon. I really wanted to go back to old WS comparison for example. It makes no sense to me that a grot can punch another grot as easily as it can a primarch. It's oversimplification too far to just be rushed dicing. Comparative skill to get through their guard should still be a thing imo.

The only unit that can bring full flamers is the aggressors with 2 per model. Instead somehow blood angels have both a melta pistol and a giant flamethrower tank because why not give them every ridiculous option?

I am curious about what you think the new shooting phase will be like - the only thing that concerns me about the edition is how the psychic abilities work with shooting - for example: will we be able to use our psychic abilities and then use our physical weapons or will we have to choose one or the other - they were very vague about this during the preview - needless to say this new edition is going to be interesting to play.

As a new player this is very exciting to see I'm pleased I've held off buying an army yet. I'm not against the complications of the current addition but I'm far more likely to be able to convince friends and family to join me with the more simplified rules. Look forward to getting tenth addition, great video 👍

I LOVE the new Skulking Horrors rule for Termagants! My friend plays Orks, and he's always just blendered my Terms if I ever leave them even slightly vulnerable because of his really reliable charges. Very keen to have a response to that, a way of keeping my little gunbugs out of harm's way.

I might be getting excited a little early but I genuinely cannot wait for 10E,I was smiling ear-to-ear with some of the rules they teased No Psychic Phase with Powers used as abilities on the Datasheet making them more flexible? Great, always wanted something like that. Morale being taken in a new direction? Looking forward to seeing how it's handled. Datasheets being shortened down to cards with KEYWORDED RULES FOR WEAPONS ALA HORUS HERESY, YES PLEASE I'll admit I got into the hobby in early 9th, but overall I think I hated 9E and it's handling certainly took me out from enjoying the actual game for a bit, whether it's the fluctuating power of each new codex as each concurrent release would go "nuh uh, my army's stronger than yours" before being demolished until they weren't fun to play anymore, or the sheer rules bloat with every single codex feeling 50 pages longer than they should be because apparently putting "Twin-Linked" on a weapon wasn't as halpful as writing out a novel that rivals Of Mice and Men in length explaining how you can re-roll hit rolls with a specific attack, but seeing the direction they're taking suckered me right back in and I can't wait to see what other improvements are headed in

I'm really digging the new Terminators, I always thought the iconic helmet was a bit too oversized, now it looks just right. Also, really good job with the WS,BS,A on weapon profiles, will probably help balance out ranged options in all factions.

I hope there could still be enough diversity in the game with so few strats now. Pulling off some tricks through strats that are not commonly used is actually a pretty fun experience, like self-detonating tau battlesuits and all that. Also, I enjoyed all the space marine doctrine things, added a lot of different flavors for different chapters. I hope that's not striped away.

They stated in the live reveal for morale that they wanted to make sure they got rid of the outlier (i.e. always wanting to roll high, except on morale), so the 8+ is the target number for a successful leadership check for the termagaunts. In essence, they want you to know that every single time you roll, rolling high is better.

With a bigger focus on data sheets, I would love a focus on physical cards like the big ones you can get in AoS when their battle tomes release. I love digital, but there’s nothing like having a physical card as a gaming asset. You can put markers on it. You can hand it to another player who has questions. Just love those cards.

Excited about the changes, might give 40K another go of it! Why the "Skulking Horrors" ability on the Termagants isn't a universal keyword like "ambush" that applies to various different models across the game, as it likely will, is beyond me though.

The Index system makes me nervous. As a Tson I'm pretty happy with how separately the army feels from WB/DG/etc. I can hang with the Psychic phase being dispersed - makes the game feel more like the flow of battle as far as I reckon. I'm guessing that they will change data sheets so that they have more rules on them (i.e: all is dust) but I'm excited about the prospect of not having to run Duplicity to feel competitive!

Looks pretty good to be honest. I like the new split data sheet. It looks like a lot of empty space, maybe all data sheets are a full page so you can store and sort them in a binder? I'm not too keen on army construction though. I like the force organization chart. I will have to play with it.

I do like the idea of Morale no longer costing models. The other day I was watching a video about the Battle of Osowiec Fortress, and how soldier's fears played a part. And it had me thinking about previous thoughts on using the morale decreasing abilities of some of my Tyranids, but so many of the armies seem to just be immune to the morale phase. With it no longer costing models, units don't necessarily have to be completely immune to fear lest they be hurt too much by it. Mmm... as far as general purpose weapons, I think it's a good thing when weapons aren't useless against certain targets. It reduces how often a game is lost at list building. This game doesn't really have a sideboard like MTG, you can't adapt to what you encounter. Still, I do see merit in weapons being a bit specialized, and I always found it a bit silly that weapons that have high strength, also tend to have high AP, and high damage. Like why can't there be high AP attacks that don't do much damage but have high chance to hit, or models that are very hard to hit but don't have many wounds. I've never been fond of invulnerable saves, as you can't really interact with them, except for Mortal wounds, which lead to a situation where mortal wounds started popping up everywhere, invalidating the invul saves. Very much one of the reasons I hate hard counters in games. Besides which they already have a way to implement a more dynamic interaction, toughness and armor. If they would just unlink them, and give models more varied wound numbers to reflect that... Well I don't have high hopes for that. I feel like the game will be just a little different, but not enough for my liking.

There is a lot of interesting stuff here. I really like the new data sheets I think they look better. I am a little worried about list building...however we will see. Stratagems I think is over all a good choice I just hope they make the 6 or so each faction gets fitting for the faction and strong. Well I don't mind the damage/ap being tweaked I also wondering if models/units will still get there own unique feel based like they do now.. Also how long be for new codex drop? I mean the free indexes help. I am also interested in seeing how they handle there army builder.

Sounds pretty good. I'm going to reserve my judgement until we see the full ruleset, as well as the index, but on average this looks like a welcome improvement. Rules wise the games does seem to be heading more towards AOS esque rules, though not as much as some rumors suggested. Though frankly, tying physic/magic to phases is something I would actually like to see in AoS. Really curious about morale, especially as somebody that wants horde to be viable again. It is a shame about the codex's (I know a lot of Imperial Guard players that are not going to be happy), though I am still happy that everything is getting a index day one. Frankly, and I know this won't happen, but I kind of hope they stick with a index for all armies. Pretty tired of Codex Creep, and considering how frequently rules are updated it seems like a better way to handle matters. Also happy to hear boarding patrol is sticking around, was looking to get into that. Very interested in combat patrol, if only because I really like collecting combat patrol boxes. Finally, the models look great. Didn't expect much else, despite the occasional screw up I feel GW has been on a roll recently when it comes to models. I am still curious if the big box is going to be Ultramarines again. Everything seems to imply "Yes", but since we are getting new terminators I don't think a big Dark Angel focus seems unlikely. If nothing else, it would feel weird for Deathwing Knights and Deathwing command squads to not get a update. Regardless, depending on what is in it I might use it as either the basis for a Dark Angel force or a supplement for my Salamanders. I mean, if it has Primaris Flamers I pretty much have to play them as Salamanders.

@Alex Bell No, if you look at a picture of a winged tyrant you will clearly see that what's in the trailer isn't a warrior. The much larger size compared to the terminator, being able to effortlessly rip him in two after tanking a burst from his assault cannon, and the notable, distinctive horn on the front of its head marks it as a tyrant. Warriors are not that much larger than astartes, in comparison.

Strategems were already a bit 'gotcha'-y. Every army in 9th has obscure rules that are impossible to predict unless you happened to play their army. I think putting them in the ability section helps both players realize what each unit is capable of. Also, managing CP is a big skill but the shift might help prevent digging yourself a hole in the first few turns.

I think if they have a faction's "reactive" abilities fall into broad play styles, like Space Bugs get to move, Space Elves get to counterstrike in melee, Space Dwarves get to overwatch, Space Giants get to shrug wounds, etc, then even if you don't remember the details for any given unit, you'll be able to keep the broad strokes in mind while playing. Would also maintain a bit of flavor for the factions.

What I hope with the new unit spreadsheets is that like shooting, in the fight phase if you have 2 assault weapons instead of picking an either or attacks with, instead like AoS, you attack with both, as each weapon has its own profile, and you can delegate all attacks to 1 weapon of choice. EG Chain axe and Chain Sword-wielding Khorn berserker, or Knigt with a powerfist and chain sword combo
