If anyone is curious, the hand signals the SU-57 pilot was using were actual signals. He first said, "follow me" then he said "330". "Follow me, heading 330" asking Mav to follow him north back to the base he came from, away from the ship which was south of their position. So, they really did think he was a friendly before Maverick started shooting.
@George Young Pretty much. There really isn't much chance of any of these jets being anywhere near each other. No reason at all to ever risk such a thing. They do battle from distances the naked eye can't even see.
You can tell Tom Cruise was never going to let this be anything other than a fantastic movie, you can feel the passion in every scene. It's been a very long time since I've had that sort of thrill at the Cinema.
The movie literally revived the theater viewing throughout the US last year. My local theater is small and only second run. They showed it three times for a total of five or six weeks last year. Almost all sold out too.
The level of movement and action in the air is intense, but what's even more impressive is how well the filmmakers have conveyed what's going on. You can actually understand the maneuvers the pilots are making, and it really adds to the excitement of the scene. It's clear that a lot of care and attention went into making these sequences both thrilling and authentic.
@Gérard Menvusa Yeah if you knew what you are talking about you wouldn't say that, it easily can and does happen. Newer does not always mean better. Look at the 35c. Anyway, each new version has different things it's good and bad at and what ever you are in you pilot into the maneuvers your plane is best for. Take an F18, capable of very high alpha slow flight and fast turn, some newer jets cannot out rate it. It also depends on the configuration of it. An F18 that is configured for electronic warfare is called a growler, and it would not be very well equipped to dog fight etc.
@Gérard Menvusa 2 new fictional fighters. People here trying to act smart when those fighters werent even named anywhere in the movie, armchair analysts in youtube immediately jumped to saying it's the SU-57, an unproven Gen-4 at best. I'd say the movie was authentic enough.
watched several videos with Navy pilots reacting to this who said that the Su-57 doing that Cobra maneuver would have just made himself an easy target for an incoming radar-guided missile. or IF it did manage to dodge the missile, Maverick could have easily shot him down with the F-14's gun. not to mention that a fully-armed Su-57 would have had a harder time pulling off that maneuver compared to if it was unarmed.
Liked the movie. I'm not a pilot, but I've dome some reading. The SU 57's maneuver resulted in a serious loss of physical momentum of his airplane. Mav & Rooster's plane remained supersonic, looked like. If true, the stolen plane might have been able to out run that bad guy. There were no map references, so you really didn't know what was gong on. Interesting about the recent incident south of Crimea this last week.
Everybody is praising Maverick but that SU57 pilot that did that weird move that confused both Mav and Rooster should get some recognition. That was cool as hell
It's a Cobra maneuver, has been possible in nearly all fighter planes built after 1970, nothing too spectacular In a real dogfight though he would certainly be dead because all missiles since around the same time are built to explode on proximity not on hit
3:28 and forward, especially at 3:38 I love the way Zimmer blended some of the "danger zone" music in to make an ominous danger zone. One of the many things that makes this movie so friggin good
@Hentai Spirit i can kinda, hard to describe. The music a bit after 3:38 sounds like the music at the "highway to the" part of the danger zone . Sorry if i did a pisspoor job at describing it
I enjoyed this movie so much, I decided to go again with my 8-year-old boy. We live right near an Air Force base and you can drive by a couple of fighter jets on the way to the theatre. We wore our aviators and listened to the soundtrack the whole way there and back. It’s a great memory for the both of us.
The old and new fighter dogfight scene is too cool. There's no way a Tomcat can beat a modern fighter at blind range, but in this situation it's not impossible to win. The variable wing mechanism is also perfectly displayed, and it's really a battle scene with a perfect score of 100 for all seats.😄
@Holy Crap Also, the SU57 could have just flown off and attacked from long distance. The F14 would be defenseless then. But this way it made a better movie 😉
the F-14 is a dogfighter and has a bigger advantage of speed, toughness and maneuverability newer "fighters" are stand off weapons. It was called the Tom Cat for a reason. A big tough adversary that would mix it up, take hits and still come home.
@bob1986 A closer analogy would just be the bayonet, and you'd be surprised at how often soldier's aren't issued rifles that can mount them now a days. The point is that it rarely ever happens in modern combat, so while jets have a basic gun for if they find themselves in that unlikely situation, they aren't designed around dog-fighting like older jets are. The Felon in this video for example has those fancy vectored thrusters for dog-fighting, but an F-22 raptor has much more limited version of that. Yet the raptor is a 5th gen fighter and the felon would fall closer to 4.5 gen. Why? Because the raptor traded that in for a much better stealth profile. Because of this it's not unreasonable to think that an older jet could beat a more modern one in a blind range dog-fight.
@💧🐍 They still have to be capable just in case. Similar to how most ground fighting is done with drones and long range bombardment instead of dudes with rifles running into close range shooting and bayoneting each other, but troops are still trained to do that and given rifles just in case.
Aaaaaaargh! no importa cuántas veces vea esta escena, la persecusión en el cañón siempre me pone los pelos de punta!!, grandiosas visuales y excelente música!
Man...I never would have imagined they could do such a brillant job at the sequel. Everything is phenomenal. Simply phenomenal. Bravo and a standing ovation to all!
@BA S Agree with you. They wouldn't know everything. That's why it took Rooster a while to figure out getting the comms working (though note that he eventually did). But ejection handle loops are pretty basic information regarding an aircraft. Its not even classified information and even I or anyone in the public could find that out. He would definitely have known what those loops above his head were (again this is my opinion).
Some of the key scenes such as the movie opening are a direct clone of the original and it's a tremendous tribute to just how good the original film was. Huge respect for the original DOP in the first film for the direction and shot selection on the carrier as the Tomcats were landing.
Well, they borrowed liberally from a bunch of other movies. The test pilot bit was from Space Cowboys. The scene where the admiral reads off his accomplishments and wonders why Mav hasn't been promoted or retired came from Down Periscope, and I was seeing bits and pieces of other movies. The canyon dogfight was from Independence Day...I was waiting for Mav to pop his chute and blind the guy behind him. Blowing up the entrance and dropping smart bombs was Luke Skywalker stuff...use the Force, Mav! If only the Millennium Falcon and not Hangman had saved the day at the end...
If you think about it, this dogfight scene is basically a reminder of the first Top Gun, one of the instructors in the first movie stated that pilots relied on missiles way too much and forgot the lost art of dogfighting, and Maverick couldn’t get a victory without the missiles, so he used his guns. The instructor was right all along.
In the theater when that fifth gen fighter performed a perfect 360 spin to avoid Mav’s missile you could hear the entire theater of adults exclaim “what the fuck!!!” Together! It was a incredible experience you can only have in a theater full of passionate Top gun fans ……
If those had been AIM-9Xs, as would be the actuat case, unlikely aerobatics and flares would have shaken them off. And I guess it's just for the movie that he has only two heatseekers and an M61 that fires at a really slow 1,200 rpm.
And that is the exact point where the Su pilot gets shot to pieces. You present a top-down aspect to any fighter of any era at that range, unless the attacking pilot is asleep, he's going to blow that plane right to Mars.
Those of us who watched both movies always wanted to be maverick. Ace Combat made that a reality. That being said, these are the greatest movies for air combat I have ever watched.
The subtle movements from the SU pilot are quite impressive. He moves his head around trying to get a better look & hoping for a lock on, and then slumps his shoulders and head when he realises it won’t, and he’ll have to gun it.
The change of the look on Mav's face when he's just about to fire says it all: it's 110% good old instinct-driven badass Maverick...Absolutely love it!!!
As a 48 year old, recently having to watch a lot of Marvel, Capt. America, Dr. Strange, etc (for family), watching Maverick was water to desert . . . so refreshing and made me feel good. All that kid stuff wasn't meant for me. This was our kid stuff back in our day LOL!
I've got a couple years on you, and I like this AND Marvel movies. I was reading comics the same time I saw 'Top Gun' back in '86. I was on time for all the '80s classics, but I also enjoy any good comic book story brought to the screen. There's no shame in liking both.
I still remember the scene where Arnold fired that guy on a missile from a Sea Harrier, computer graphics can’t give that feeling just like real orchestral background movie score is always better than any electronic music
Maverick always goes all out in a mission. He is also a good teacher as he is teaching them reasonable things. Like he understands everything. He knows enemies strategies and shows them a good plan.
Probably watched this movie over a dozen times. It's so realistic from a military perspective, down to the kak breaths while pulling heavy g's on that wicked incline. OUTSTANDING
@Merlin Correction: the most realistic blockbuster movie with jets/dogfighting compared to anything we have seen on screen at this magnitude that feels immersive.
dozen plus here Its my now go to movie.... I can't believe now gonna be 50 this year how the hell I missed out on Jennifer Connelly growing up ... I was a Elizabeth Shue fan ... I missed out on that one
It's not realistic from a military perspective. The mission they flew could've been done easily with enough cruise missiles. Enemy also deployed so many high range AA missiles at the side of a canyon for whatever reason. The gun from the F-14 sounds absolutely not like it should. Mav saying the terrain will confusee the targeting system also doesn't really make sense since the Su-57 used IR missiles here. It would have made sense for radar guided missiles. They used a standard machine gun sound for it it seems. It was not realistic at all, but it was entertaining.
I love Rooster callback to his dads line from the first movie “Come on Mav, do some of that pilot sh*t!” Followed by the same move he used in the first movie. I’m referring to when Maverick and Goose were in the training dog fight scene against Jester. Same line, same maneuver
For those wondering, the signals back and forth between Maverick and the Su-57 pilot were: "Hi there! Comms down (radio not working)." -- "Roll out of turn." "Comms down." -- "Heading 3-3-0." I'm rather surprised Mav didn't know them, even if he's from another era of flight. He should have brushed-up upon returning to flight school, anyway.
Agree with you. Specially because Maverick was an active pilot, always beeing recruited for missions... If it was real life he would know the signals...
@MB Hog He definitely looks older than the rest of the fresh faced 25 year olds, and older than Mav and his father were in the first film but he might be a little younger than 37.
Actual Navy fighter pilots reviewed that scene and even they said those hand signals are not crystal clear. They can mean different things for different countries..
I love the attention to detail in this movie. @ 3:01 you can see the control surface and throttle nozzles move in the direction the Felon is moving, makes us pilots very happy to see these often overlooked details in movies!
@Vousie V I would imagine they based it off of footage of the SU-57. It’s a pretty exclusive plane, and Russia wouldn’t exactly be loaning out its flagship air superiority fighter for a a movie
I cant get enough of this scene. Ive probably watched it 40+ time. The one line that really hits home is "com-on Mav do some of that pilot shit" holy chills
The only movie I've ever seen that literally had me on the edge of my seat. One of my fav things about it was that the baddies were highly skilled as well. That first missile miss set the tension high
For this movie I really think it has one of the best F bomb placements in any movie I’ve seen. This movie really paid homage to the first movie and I can’t stop rewatching it
Fun fact: the Su-57's top speed is Mach 2.0. The F-14's is Mach 2.5. So, yes, actually. Were it not for their missiles, Maverick and Rooster _could've_ outran them. Lots of people assume that these new 5th gen fighters are also faster and longer ranged simply because they're more advanced, but that's not always the case. More to the point, they're often _slower_ than 4th or sometimes even 3rd gen fighters, because the fighters from back then relied on speed a lot more in lieu of stealth or electronic countermeasures.
@Mark H Beardsley we know that the F-14 can go supersonic with 2 1,000lb gbu's and a targeting pod. The pilot and RIO wanted to see if they could get 1,000 the ground speed. They had to slow dow after range controll asked them where they were going.
I dont think people expected this sequel to be good. This sequel is legit the best example of making a sequel and doing it right in every which way possible.
After Mav did the Splitting Throttles trick he ended up with a perfect gun shot on the the second SU-57. However it was more cinematic for him to go for the Fox-2 so I don't blame the film makers to go with that. Awesome scene.
@ThePanda Now the US Navy is looking for a modern long range fighter, one with more range, more speed than the F-35, probably a 2 seater in order to allow it to control drones and manage the air battle. Translation a 6th Gen Tomcat.
@ELP LLC It was expensive to maintain because of it's swing wing design. It's main purpose was no longer an issue after the Soviet Union fell plus it was outdated and not worth upgrading.
I love that you can sense the pilots frustration when he couldn't get a lock on maverick. Even without saying anything or even see his face you could tell by his head movements he was pissed
It's crazy that Howard Hughe's movie making lessons from "Hell's Angels" 90 years ago is still being applied to a modern aviation movie-- you can't tell how fast they're moving if you don't have "clouds".
@Robin Dale guy just compared the suns heat coming from millions of kilometers away reflecting of the earts surface that has an average surface temperature of 28°C to a 900°C actively hot radiating engine
I pretty much stopped going to theaters and watch more youtube and netflix, but I've watched this in its entirety several times and several scenes many times, this movie is such a refreshing change from too much CGI and never ending superhero movies
"Don't think - feel. It is like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory." Bruce Lee 1973
I can't stress how crazy and intense this was watching this in a premium format like IMAX, Dolby Cinema or XD...I understand people can still vastly enjoy this film from their home, but they made a great decision to wait to release this in theaters. If you didnt see this on a premium format you truly missed out. Made me straight up cry tears of joy
I don't know why, but it makes me happy that the second pilot survives. You wouldn't expect faceless grunts to survive, but it shows that they're not as mindless and suicidal as these movies often portray them.
Just love every minute of this masterpiece. I love topgun since the 80s. And espacially i love the F14. When i am thinking about a plane, it would always be first the tomcat. And this moment in the movie when he mets the F14. Like an old love story - impossible to supscribe. It would get nobody who would be better than Tom for a movie like this. It's like the masterspiece - a manuel for a fighter jet movie. Insane PS: I am a motorcycle lover, especially Kawasaki. That he has in every movie an Kawasaki is a big point as well💪🏍 Thanks for that Tom!
The first was good for the production date, but this one out did the first. I loved everything about this movie. Saw it three times and still wowed by it. Had to be the best movie of 2022 in my opinion. Tom Cruise is hilarious and amazing. The cast, the scenes, all amazing. Standing ovation.
One detail I think many people overlooked is that the two 'bad guys' were close enough to see that Maverick and Rooster had personalised helmets where as the opposition looks like they wear plain ones. This should have obviously given away the fact that they were not on the same side.
@MysticalMagic92 That's where you and I differ. You're with the group of people who prefer a cookie cutter movie, and I'm with the group that prefers some realism applies to give the movie more credibility. I think Cruise was going for the latter.
@One-Eyed Beanie Considering it's a movie and not the real world, I'll probably take the "cookie cutter take," whatever that means. And if a movie is good, details are placed intentionally and deliberately. Top Gun is one of those movies. If there are so many other small details that are meaningful, what makes this one not? Unless you'd like to explain another meaning of the very real hand signals.
@MysticalMagic92 Sometimes the real world doesn't do subtlety, especially in warfare! You wan't the movie to be realistic or just another Hollywood cookie cutter take?
@One-Eyed Beanie Well then that defeats the purpose of subtlety in any movie then, doesn't it? Considering they didn't fire immediately after an insufficient response to the very real military hand signals that were used, it's not an unreasonable deduction. Many movies, including this one, have small details that don't spell anything out but provide good context if noticed. What's the point of that kind of story crafting then if only the overt details matter? Plus, many "theories" are later confirmed by the director or a staff member. One could always ask and find out.
@MysticalMagic92 Well it's certainly a good theory. Given it's not real and just Hollywood, I guess we'll never me able to test the theory out. I still tend to believe the character's own words in the movie rather than the audience's comments.
Only Maverick can do this in an F 14 Tomcat, people don’t take that in account, he’s the greatest fictional pilot that ever lived, Maverick is a Legend.
@Jeremy B The F-14 "Tomcat" was retired for various reasons, some of the most important being maintenance costs and obsolescence. While the aircraft served the U.S. Navy exemplary for over over 30 years, the aircraft's complex sweep wing engineering became too expensive to manage economically.
@Jeremy B and cost, dude the F-14 needs SOOO much work per flight hour it was insane it was cheaper and in my opinion better to retire it and have the navy move onto the F-18s bc they require less than half the work per flight hour, have less moving parts (relative) and had better engine alignment so one engine flaming out is not a near-death sentence like it was on the F-14
Just one of the BEST scenes ever made. I regret never seeing this at the cinema. If ever they do another showing at an imax I am there. 10/10 movie, which is rarer than unicorn shit these days.
This scene is "Like Father, Like Son" gives so much nostalgia. With Goose being in the back in the original and now Rooster. It's not the plane, it's the pilot. Everything correlates now from the originality of Goose being his best friend and now his son taking his place with coming home from the mission in a good way. I wish there was more of Maverick and Rooster's relationship as they settled.
To everyone reading this, has anyone ever told you that God loves you and has a great plan for your life? I have a quick, but very important question to ask you. If you were to die right now, do you know for a fact that you would go to Heaven? I want to tell you that the Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, and, that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved, and I want to tell you that you can make that decision today, to turn from sin and turn to Christ. If you would like to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, pray this prayer from your heart out loud to God. "Heavenly Father, I repent of sin. I receive forgiveness. I receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ is Lord, and my Savior. Come into my heart right now. I thank you for dying for me. By the blood of Jesus, right now, I am saved. In Jesus' name, Amen."
God.. It is absolutely and without a doubt one of my 5 films of the last decade of my life! I love it! The perfect sequel of the last 40 years, I remain firmly Of this idea!!!
Man, if there ever was a soundtrack that made the movie, this one is it. In less capable hands it would have been techno, high energy, "action" music in every scene, but Hans Zimmer adds the needed gravitas, almost like a funeral dirge in some places, which was the intent, given the plot turns.
The musical score in this part of the movie is absolutely insane. I can't wait for the complete score (Lorne Balfe has allegedly said that one will be released) to come out. EDIT: The first part is available on the album that's currently available for download/streaming (It's called Tally Two / What’s The Plan / F-14), but the second part (called Canyon Dogfight) is only available in Japan.
disgusting taitics of selling cds.... i've ordered the japanese version already.... did that also for Interstella as 'no time for caution' was missing in the normal version... hate that....
the scene at 3:00 of the jet tilting straight up and spinning slowly as Maverick's missile flies by reminds me of seeing actual airshow video of a Russian jet doing a cobra maneuver. However, for the airshow the aircraft was going pretty slow. I wonder just how fast a jet can fly when it does that without the pilot losing control or control surfaces tearing off. While a dogfight is relatively slow, I'm not sure they go that slow.
I went to see this film with my partner, I was worried they had ruined top gun... Nope. I giggles and got goosebumps all the way through. "Talk to me Rooster" as it it was a tribute to Goose. WHAT A FILM!
It says so much about Maverick that he'd try and beat 2 5th gen fighters by himself or with any other partner. He is not, nor has he ever been, afraid of a challenge. He's just doing his best to protect Rooster, and was 100% ready to accept capture and/or death when he got shot down, as long as Rooster got home okay.
I really liked this movie. I actually liked it better than the first one. Sequels are usually not that good, but they did a really excellent job with this one. Fantastic.
@Andrew Needham I mean, its a sequel so i can understand it taking a few things from the first movie, like Goose look into Rooster, with the same type of mustage and so on, i can even take most of that. But yeah that bar scene was pretty cringey. Besides that the movie was awesome specially action wise, but if you ask me, without that much action like the first one i dont think this one does that well.
@Kimi Räikkönen I can understand that. Felt less like an homage and more like a blatant ripoff? I felt the same with the 4th Indiana Jones movie, where they introduce "Mutt" (Shia LaBeouf). Where he comes through the smoke, riding a motorcycle? Supposedly was an homage to Marlon Brando in "The Wild One," but I found it to be undeserved in its attempt. Came off more like plagiarism to me.
@Peter Kolesár It's supposedly Iranian...not Russian...as the Russians : 1- don't have F-14s 2- already own the largest nuclear weapons stockpile in the world.
