Michael Merryman 7 dias atrás
@wallywallendo it's definitely in danger of losing the freedoms it was built on, that's for sure. It's still pretty free tho... And I still can't think of a country that's more free. It's not perfect but it might be the closest thing to it at least for now. Cheers!
wallywallendo 8 dias atrás
@Michael Merryman generally the American flag is used for that purpose because of the ideals of the US in the constitution even though the us isn’t the most free
Michael Merryman
Michael Merryman 8 dias atrás
@wallywallendo you may have a point but If you had to pick a nation's flag it seems like it would have to be U.S. I cant think of another nation's flag that regularly is used as a symbol of freedom. And it's not a coincidence, it's organic but of course you'd have to ask Cubans or venezuelans or taiwanese why they use the American flag to protest for freedom.
wallywallendo 8 dias atrás
@Michael Merryman probably not the flag of a nation.

While I am naturally interested in IT and pretty much all that pertains to it (everything from software for use by the general public to military hardware) it can be easily a boring subject, depending on the presenter (like my professor, I remember the girl who would often clack her tongue ring more than anything he said!). So the fact that you through in some antics in just the right amount (I know, I should quantify that) helps make your presentations likable. Also, you are enthusiastic about the subject in your videos.

Do people that are scared of the face recognition feature scared that having it as an option at all means their phones are taking pictures of them at night or something???
BASIL!!!!! The Pumpin' Seagull
@Orion Oh no don't get me wrong. It is far far too late to try and even bother protecting your privacy. They are just sitting on that data, waiting for quantum computing and advanced AI's to be a thing. Right now they can use it, but only if you're a person of interest. The day will come when they will have the hardware and software muscle so that anyone is a person of interest at that point. Thought crimes will be pursued. Thought crimes will be whatever the government du jour deems a crime.
Orion 2 meses atrás
@BASIL!!!!! The Pumpin' Seagull I do see where you're coming from, and you're definitely right to be tentative about it. However, government agencies probably already have access to bits of your data that's way more personal-your address, all the members of your family, etc. As for data of your face, they'll already have access to it if you've ever applied for any form of ID like a passport or driving license. Getting that data from government databases is much easier than getting it from third-party companies. They'd need to apply for a warrant, ask the company (and I think the phone owner too) for consent, and all that stuff. Even then, companies have been known to refuse. You've probably heard about a case from a while back: the police needed to get into a suspect's iPhone, but couldn't as its locked state meant that all data on it was encrypted. They went to Apple and asked them to unlock it, but Apple kindly said no, and were fairly adamant too.
BASIL!!!!! The Pumpin' Seagull
@Orion I would imagine it's useful to sell to 3 letter agencies for profit? Or at the very least, being strong-armed by those same agencies to hold on to that data?
Orion 2 meses atrás
@BASIL!!!!! The Pumpin' Seagull it would need to be stored on the phone itself, otherwise you wouldn't be able to use face recognition to unlock your phone without an internet connection. I doubt Google would also hold a copy on their servers as it would just be a waste of space. Even if we look at it from a marketing perspective, there's not much they could gain from your face that they can't already from the name associated with your Google account-but in that case, your usage is way more beneficial for them to give you tailored ads and the like than either of those sources. As for iPhones, they use IR sensors to scan the contours of your face and hold no colour data-as far as I know. That means the scan of your face is even less useful to Apple than Google's.
BASIL!!!!! The Pumpin' Seagull
Facial recognition requires metadata to be built by the phone (of your facial features) to act as a key to open the device. So what happens with that metadata? Is it stored in a Google server somewhere?

Great video thanks. In the dark days of WW2 the state had the right to execute people for profiteering. While that's somewhat extreme, I find myself thinking more and more often that we could do with similar consumer protection now. To make a reasonable profit is perfectly fine, but when greedy individuals start making 500% profit it's time to repurpose the piano wire and throw a "greedy mofo lynching party" or perhaps "stoned" to death by their own product has the ring of poetic justice?

Because in the US carriers like to lock the phones to the network as well as the sims in some cases like Tracfone. Largely it was so we couldn't buy it from them then skip to another network since they subsidized some of the cost. In the past some like Sprint used to make the lock permanent so you were stuck with them even after you paid it off and finished the 2 year contract unless you went to a carrier that used their cell towers like Ting. And then there was CDMA, similar to GSM, but had no replaceable Sim card which also made switching difficult since you had to reprogram the phone using a menu and codes you had to type it during the activation process. Easy to make a mistake and sometimes didn't work the first time. A major hassle we are now starting to put behind us thanks to CDMA dying out when 3g is shutdown.

@Deborah Anne for a second I thought you were semi-reasonable so I was gonna say that Huawei came out years before freedom phone. But then the company that makes the og phones isn’t Huawei it’s just Chinese. And the whole 5g conspiracy shit. I’m not wasting my time here.

@When does the video actually start? Again, I think we disagree on the fundamentals, I do not believe you can abolish bureaucracy, its a feature of humans once you put them in those positions. systems are static, humans are dynamic and adaptive, we will get used to the new system, figure out the weaknesses and imperfections, and abuse them to our advantage, we always do, that's why we're at the apex in the first place. Also it's very hard to make everyone just do what you say, not only in terms of context switching daily or different jobs, but to "force labor" essentially, that would NOT work as long as people still have their votes, and politicans/parties will pander to those that reject the ideal model, which is why we would never decrease entitlements, social support, or let the stock market crash/big companies go bankrupt, because people cannot tolerate it. No politician dare say, we all have to consume less, spend less, make less so our children and their children can inherit the earth in a decent shape, no politician can/will say that.
When does the video actually start?
@Johnny Chao Reduce working hours to 4 a day, improve the educational system, and abolish the state bureaucracy, making everyone take turns doing a normal productive job in one week and a socially-required job like helping administrate a public school in the next. Everyone will know far more of what's going on in reality, and will be better informed to make decisions. And we have the automatization to support that.

@When does the video actually start? I guess I'm a pessimist, I see democracy the way I see communism, great idea in theory, but in practice it will fail. Because of a few assumptions: 1) Everyone voting will think logically 2) Everyone voting will know everything about all the issues despite the quantity and the complexity of military intervention to foreign diplomacy to interest rates to climate change, etc. 3) Everyone has to be thinking both for right now, short term, mid term and long term. I.e. voters making decisions for their children and grandchildren that will be a detriment to themselves 4) politicians and media will tell you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth 5) the system has any recourse to punish #4 when they act not in the voters/countrys interest I can go on, but I don't see a system that solves for this, because those are features of our system, not bugs, and the features stem from our nature to be shortsighted, selfish, irrational, easily incited, and mob mentality, and mostly ignorant and not curious. That is human nature, more for me and less work to get there. The only solution I can think of is AI overlords that are programmed without any emotion, regard for "humanity", and make decisions based on the long term good of the race/planet(s).
When does the video actually start?
@Johnny Chao I'd rather argue that the only thing that proves is that the system we have in place is not democratic, as it refuses to prepare citizens to be able to supervise the government bureaucracy
Johnny Chao
Johnny Chao 6 meses atrás
@James Mckenzie and you sir just described the best argument against democracy (individual voting), if we can't even bother to understand phones specs, how can we understand all the policy/legal positions, their short and long term consequences, and the politicians' entire history/body of work while the media helps them lie to us to get our votes with no recourse even if they break their campaign promises.

@Mark Wilmoth if a privacy centered device has a closed source OS, it is a complete joke. Erik Finman could easily stop this train if he opened up the OS code for review, but he hasn't, and considering that he uses parts of graphene OS which are explictly copyleft and yet keeps it closed source the phone is borderline illegal. Just get an andriod phone and flash a ROM or buy a phone with a flashed rom already. You will be much better off.

@miss my mama If someone wants to believe that there is a flower online for millions that cures cancer than let them believe it, that's my example. For someone to want something that's expensive and they don't know a lot about is a dumb fool. If someone wants a 3080 Ti and they pay 2000$ for it just to find out it didn't match their motherboard then that's their problem not anyone else, just like that everyone should want to learn more. If I saw a plant that cured an illness I would first look at what the plant claims to be and what the illness in question is, if the plant cures cancer then it might cure it but at the same time cancer is just a batch of bad cells that mutated and now are fighting against the immune system and sapping resources to grow, so how does this plant exactly stop the cells? If this plant kills those cells how would it also not kill the healthy cells and worsening the situation. Overall it's not hard to be smart, being smart is a choice and it's about using whatever you have to your advantage, seeing as everyone potentially has access to the internet and research that has been published I'd like to hope that they didn't believe this plant was going to be a miracle plant that just cured any and all issues within the body. So yes, if an idiot is desperate and wants to risk millions on a plant which claims to heal them then just let them do it, firstly it's not your money, and second they decided to scam themselves (People scam themselves every day almost) in a sense most people probably only check one store and buy things from it but that's silly because they could easily just check the prices of the same product in other stores and find a cheaper price. Walmart might be selling Coke Zero's 12 Pack for 4$ today and Amazon might be selling them for 6$ and you would still have a fool who would spend 2$ extra, that's on them no one else.

@Rubicon 1 Bro you can wipe out every google function on any android and flash custom ROM of your choice in less than 5 min. The point everyone in the comment section trying to make is they're just cashing of people that don't know about tech and who those believe those conspiracies and those "Influencers" mentioning "you can download any app(parlor) without any suppression" is just plain bullshit. you can literally download any app on android from chrome if not from the play store(but not that secure). That Erik guy took a gamble on Bitcoin it worked out pretty doesn't mean you can trust him on technology regarding privacy.
