BEAUTIFUL restoration of an UGLY nightstand

This nightstand is part of the bedroom set that I restored. It was made between 1930-1940, inspired by Art Noveau and National Romantism.
It was really satisfying for me to restore this piece and after that it rather looks cool and not ugly at all.

Some answers to your questions: Why I changed the knobs? Because they were missing some parts and I didn´t had resources to make new ones. What are those glasses? These are just led glasses from the Aliexpress. Why I changed the bottom of the drawer? The ink stains are impossible to remove and the new owner didn´t want to preserve the scribble under the drawer, so it was logical to change the plywood. What´s the small belt sander? It´s a Proxxon belt sander.

@Eric Sherman I can guarantee you that this wasn’t manufactured in the 1800s. My best guess is the 1930s. That’s based on the hardware & wood used.

@Givulinovich if you bought an old house, and found a name and date from t he 18th century, would you paint over it?

@bettybooboo22 I totally agree. If you have the originals, use them. Missing part or not. The replacements are nice for what they are, but seem inappropriate for the style of the table.

Totally think we need to bring back classes such as wood working back into high school. Less social indoctrination. This was beautiful

I love to see something like this cleaned up and repaired. People in America always want to throw away and buy new. Great work. Instant classic!

Thank you for not spraying it all down with some plastic toxic overcoat. Seems that people think that means restoration. This video was very gratifying to see someone actually show the wood.

your attention to detail is admirable. My father was an amazing carpenter, ended up building very nice deck/wheel chair ramps. He was lucky to find so much purpose in what he loved. It is a craft that is going extinct. Everything seems so disposable now. Defiately some treasures, great job!

Looks nice, but; Just way too much time spent on a piece it's hard to get 50-100 dollars for. From a very experienced antique dealer for 40 years.

Very very nice. I had a nightstand from all the way back to when I was in grade school. It was cheaply made with a mahogany lacquer finish. I was too lazy to strip and refinish it so I antiqued it with an antique white paint. I still have it next to my bed. Years ago I was reading and doing my homework next to it. I’m 75 now and I now read for the enjoyment of it next to it. I think everyone ought to have some artifacts around them from their younger years.

the real down side of this is that the work and costs involved far outweigh the value of this piece of furniture you would need a lot of mugs to make a business repairing furniture like this to work

@AT Restoration i agree but the piece in the video is not special its called "shipping furniture" here in the uk because no one here wants it because its worthless ,thats the reason American's come to the uk and fill 40ft containers full of it for next to nothing to take back to the usa to sell

I enjoyed this so much! I have a practical question however. How do you decide whether the bare bones of a piece is worth the skill, time, and expense to restore. The end result with this piece was amazing and the video was fascinating but was the nightstand worthy.

@AT Restoration If you are appraising a piece for yourself what criteria do you use before putting your time and skill into it? Your expert advise would be valuable to the rest of us.
