It's still my opinion that the 1980's was the greatest decade for pop culture in general, including the main art forms of music and movie making. This song is a perfect example of the ecclectic sounds of the 80's. In the 80's there were so many artists and various types of sounds, and no two artists sounded exactly the same. It was truly a great time to be alive!!

I was 10 when this song came out. It was played in the wildly popular TV show Miami Vice, and everyone knew this song back then. It's surreal getting to watch someone who's never heard this song before experience it for the first time, so thank you for making this video! :) You just about can't go wrong with a Phil Collins song. They're all fantastic. It's rare he ever made any songs not worth listening to over and over again. He's easily in my top 10 favorite musical artists of all time, right up there with Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks. Legend.

Oh and it's called frisson, the feeling that the song gives you. The "anxiety in a good way" and goosebumps. Here's a good description that I found on Google: Musical passages that include unexpected harmonies, sudden changes in volume, or the moving entrance of a soloist are particularly common triggers for frisson because they violate listeners' expectations in a positive way

When I was 22 was having an absolute terrible day. I was at the DMV with my 6mo old son and the lady sitting across from me heard me singing a Phil Collins song from Lion King to my son quietly. She asked if I had plans for the evening. I said no, so she gave me BOX SEATS to PHIL COLLINS! The concert was that night in town, and it was a private box. It was SO amazing. I took my son bc we were in the box. So that is the story of how my son's first concert was Phil Collins at 6 mos old. My son is 18 now, and Phil Collins is one of his favorites.

This has one of most iconic drum sequences in any song. Many people don’t know before he was the leader singer for Genesis, he was the drummer, a damn good one too. Then he was both for a long time Lately he has been doing mostly singing. However he always does the drums for this song. He hypes up the crowd with anticipation. He teases the fans who know what’s coming. He intrigues the newcomers. Both want more. Sadly due to health issues, he can’t perform anymore. Also his son, Nic has toured with him played drums at some of the shows. Lastly he did some iconic songs for the Tarzan movie

"greatest live performance...." Oh indeed it was! Not this particular one, but I stood transfixed for several minutes in the Royal Albert Hall many years ago when he guested with Eric Clapton. It was magnificant. Then for the cherry on the cake, we got a trio of Eric, Phil and Mark Knopfler - doing 'something'! I was still 'in the air...'!

The kids these days just don’t have the quality of music we had! They have the internet, we didn’t. They have cell phones, we didn’t. Social media, any movie they could ever want to see, they’ve got it all. But most of us older people probably wouldn’t trade one good album, even one good song for all the modern technology they’ve got in their youth.

I heard this song and was "introduced" to Phil Collins for the first time in 1981 by my then- boyfriend. ( He was a drummer too, and Phil was his absolute IDOL! GEE! Wonder why?😁😁😁) I fell head over heels in LOVE with Phil Collins that VERY FIRST TIME ! His VOICE, his DRUMMING, AND his SONGS!😍😍😍😍😍 Every song that he's written, whether it be for Genesis OR for his OWN albumns, Has touched me, some in the most profound and deepest ways! Phil Collins is a TRIPLE THREAT--- And a MASTER!

This track was honestly a landmark in music production, Phil Collins and co spent years trying to figure out how to make digital reverb on drums to create that iconic 80s gated reverb sound. This was a monumental jump forward in the way production treated drumming in the mix. Without this jump there would be no hip hop, no electronic music, music as we know it would be completely different. This song is massive in its impact on music production.

Y'all have the gist of the story right, but a few of the minor details wrong. The gated reverb sound was discovered accidentally by sound engineer Hugh Padham when he was working with Phil Collins in the studio, who was laying down drum tracks for his former bandmate Peter Gabriel. He had a new fancy mixing board with built-in compression and noise gate for every channel, and accidentally had them on when he went to talk to Phil through the talkback mic. The gated reverb drum sound made it's debut on Peter Gabriel's song "Intruder." Hugh Padham went on to co-produce Phil Collins's first solo album with Phil, which included "In the Air Tonight." Padham replicated the technique he had previously used before. Phil's song was a much bigger hit than Gabriel's, though, and introduced the sound to millions of people, and caught the ear of sound engineers and producers who went on to copy it.

I think Kraftwerk and the synthesizer played a bigger part in the creation of hip-hop and electronic music. Not to mention disco and funk. They were popular before this song came out. Just sayin’.

This song never, ever gets old. Saw him in concert back in the 70's. Music from the 50's, 60's and 70's were the best. At 65, I am one of his biggest fans. To have the lungs to sing the later part of this song is remarkable.

The core of his band is Daryl Steurmer on guitar, Chester Thompson on drums, and Leland Sklar on bass. Each of those guys in their own right are virtuoso musicians with distinguished careers. Watching your reaction to the video is priceless. You should have been there when they played live. The audio quality and those amazing musicians made you fly to your feet and just go for it all evening long. Those were the days when true musical monsters roamed the Earth.

Mine too. Except longer ago. Saw him live in Nashville. It was by far the best concert I’ve ever seen. Back in the day you had to call into a radio station and request a song. BUT they would only play it once an hour. I would stay up all night and request this song every hour!

I have worked in radio, and I can tell you Phil Collins and Genesis were one of the biggest bands of the 80s, and as you can see, he still draws a huge audience! Playing drums while singing is the most difficult to do of all instruments to play and sing because they can lose their breath drumming. At one point Phil was booked solid with shows for SIX YEARS!! Yeah, he’s huge!
