@Hello there I don't mind :>
I am Japanese in my 20's and I love city pop. I also recommend Tatsuro Yamashita, Eiichi Otaki, and Haruomi Hosono. You probably know them haha(^ω^) I hope you will come to Japan when the Coronavirus situation settles down. Recently, music festivals are finally being held in Japan!

@Ketueki666 Shit I live in America and I'm sick of this country to the point where I want to abandon everything I know here and be a free spirit going wherever I want. I would fly to Germany and book the trip with you. Imagine the fucking adventure that would be!!!
Ketueki666 2 dias atrás
Sadly i cant fly to japan, bcuz of personal reasons and stuff. There is way i could visit japan, but that would take 2 weeks with train from germany, to a bay in russia and from there with a boat to japan. And the biggest problem is... i cant travel alone and no person i know is interested in japan :,)

@SNES Nes Latinamericans in general, we were raised on imported media, american cartoons were for smaller kids, and american teen drama didn't really relate to our way of living (lockers in school? we were lucky to have a school at all) So there was a huge gap in the media that a pre-pubescent or teen would consume. Then we got a fuckload of anime from japan, which was the right mix of violence, romance and magic. (think Saint Seiya, Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball,Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Digimon, Captain Tsubasa, etc), we were also blessed with amazing voice over talent. We also got anime waaaay before the US in general. For example our first dubbed screening of Dragon Ball was in 1988, while the american Funimation was recorded in 1995, and formally released in 2001. It also helps that our parents grew up watching Mazinger, Ultraman and Speed Racer, so they didn't really have an argument against anime, like american parents.
RandomMonkey 7 dias atrás
@SNES Nes bro why is that fax
Tim 8 dias atrás
@SNES Nes If i had to make a guess, I would say that cartoons are likely more prevalent in america rather than Mexico, so Mexican kids are more likely to watch anime than american kids

Grettings my friend. As a brazillian, lo-fi lead me to this great piece of your culture. Then, I've meet Masayoshi Takanaka, with his "Brasilian skies" album and realised that the great relationship that our nations have for decades (mostly, sadly, after WW2) wasnt all about money after all. Brazillian and japanease culture have merged in a wonderfull way. Many of your music between the 60's to 80's have brazillian inspiration. Genres like Samba and Bossa Nova are deply present in japanese music. The backing vocal, the brass and woodwind are clear exemples to me. In the other hand, japanese TV shows like Ultraman and "Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya" had a huge impact on my father's generation. It has even forged an jargon: "virado no Jiraiya" most famously know for it's use in Raul Seixas music "Capim Guiné". It derivates from other jargon, "virado no caralho", and basically means that one's so pissed that could easily behave just like the character and kick everybody asses. For my tho, it was the animes (of course), mostly Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Naruto, Death Note; as well as TV shows like Madan Senki Ryūkendō and Power Rangers (that was american but heavely based on Sūpā Sentai Shirizu). Nintendo, Playstation and SEGA played a huge part on this as well, and all of this has been integrated along side all the brazilian musics, TV shows, holydays and alike to my people culture, making our childhood far more enjoyable. They are a recorrent subject among most of my friends and have now days a great nostalgic feeling to it. I've watched Cowboy Bebop a few years ago (a piece of art btw). Imagine my surprise when realised that the three old men in the animation were named "Carlos", "Antônio" e "Jobim" as a tribute to the Bossa Nova Compositor Antônio Carlos Jobim, creator of many famous songs as "Garota de Ipanema". And oh boy, Cowboy's Bebop music (The seatbelts, I believe) is just great. That's only the "tip of the iceberg", I believe, once I'm learning more every day since. If you have any interest about it I recomend all of the above (Takanaka, Tom Jobim and The seatbelts), with the exception of Raul Seixas once it differs a lot from the genre (Rock). As well as Tim Maia, Vinicius de Moraes, Jorge Ben Jor, Carmen Miranda, Elis Regina and Wilson Simonal. Just pick the 2~3 most famous tracks from each. Sorry for the bible I've just wrote, but couldnt just let the chance to talk about what I've discover about both our people with one of you guys. Thanks your great nation for beeing the cradle of sutch great artists with such a great taste. Brazil loves Japan. Thanks for your time as well. Hope one day I can meet your land personally. Christ bless you and your people. See ya.

Fun fact that nobody asked for but I’m gonna share anyway: Whenever I need to study or focus on my school work, I turn on Japanese city pop and since I don’t understand the lyrics I can focus on my work but also listen to the beautiful singing by the artists. That's actually one of the reasons I love city pop as well. I can't focus on writing when I'm listening to music with words. But city pop has a nice beat that's both energetic and relaxing to me, and since I can't understand the majority of the lyrics, it's like the voice is just another instrument in the song. (Which I'd argue is technically true even when I CAN understand the lyrics, but I didn't know how else to say it lol)

@milk honey - I haven’t heard every city pop song but most of the stuff I’ve heard (that comes from the 80s) is jazz fusion funk music (EW&F) or poppy R&B/soul (stuff like the Bee Gees). All the chord progressions and basslines I’ve heard in City Pop have been rooted in American black music. Care to provide some examples showing what you’re saying? I’m interested in this kinda thing
milk honey
milk honey 2 meses atrás
@Triad while that is true, i also wanna point out the progression of the melodies and especially the basslines in japanese music is very unique and really makes it special, so one may find it lacks a certain something while listening to them :> i adore both but i fully know this, esp as a bass player, which really makes it noticeable

City pop is just 70s R&B/funk made by the Japanese in the 80s. If you like this listen to bands like The Whispers and Earth Wind & Fire.

As a person who was born in 2001, I feel as though I've stumbled upon an important part of history. Theres so many secret songs I've never heard before that just speak to me. Really cool. And it's really sad to know that 1980 now has been 42 years ago. I hope people keep on listening to this type of music and somehow it does not get lost as an echo in time. Hopefully we can carry the past into our future

I love lists like these because it reminds me of my mom. She used to work in Japan when she was a young woman. I like to imagine what her life was like when she was there, with this playlist.

Man I miss japan, its been since 2010. Those 2 weeks were freaking awesome. Its like a home I never thought I'd have. The nights of eating yakitori, okonomiyaki, udon etc with a couple bottles of Asahi. The baking cages, karaoke rooms, going to Yokohama and spending the holiday season at Minatomirai etc etc. I miss it all

I gotta thank Yakuza 0 for getting me into 80s Japanese city pop. While it never played in the game, as it was all equally sick battle music, the game made me curious on how Japan was like in the 80s and led me here

If you go to Japan, leave the hotel at 3 AM and take a walk with this on. You won't forget it. I had a smiliar playlist to this on my Spotify on my trip in 2019 and I felt like I was floating.

Japan's a treasure trove for a sound that I find more and more underappreciated each passing year in the US. It's a testament to how timeless the roots of funk, measures on the offbeat, and big band instrumentals blended so well together. I'll be listening to stuff like this in my old age. It'll just never get old.

I think the reason it seems so inexplicably familiar is because a lot of this style made it into old school video game soundtracks most of us played.

I remember like it was yesterday, I had just left college, I put on my headphones and walked to the nearest Cafeteria, it was raining lightly and the feeling of the drops falling on my face was incredible. I listened almost daily. At night, with the lights of the streets of Tokyo illuminating me, I could feel free, while walking and listening to these songs. Today I am 13 years old and I still love them

2000's children who have never been to japan: ahh, yes. This truly brings back memories from when I was in japan and I would drive around listening to these songs in the 80's at midnight while the city lights twinkled in the distance! This is so nostalgic.

A lovely mix. This whole mix, but especially the song "I'm In Love -" by Tomoko Aran makes me think of something that happened to me in the past. I always had a weak spot for East Asian countries, different cultures, and their people. Two and a half years ago I've met a Japanese and we fell in love like crazy back then. We've only been together for 4 1/2 months but it was such an intense and romantic time that looking back at it, it gives me the most joyful flashbacks and memories, haha. I'm very appreciative of that time cause it influenced my life for the better. We were living in different cities, visiting each other often and spending weekends together going to the coolest places in town. That was pre-corona. Things didn't work out in the end, but it was one crazy ride to remember for sure. One night we were listening to sensual, chill music, bathing together and the next moment we've been laying in bed having sex six times in a row from evening to early morning. For two years now I'm in an even better relationship with a Chinese beauty and we are planning on getting engaged. I love that girl I'm together with more than anyone else I ever did and could not imagine life without her, however, I think it is okay to sometimes look back at the past and remember nice moments like the ones I spend with that crazy Japanese chick, lol... Well, I'm happy things turned out good and I finally met the person that fills out my life and my fiance loves Japanese city pop too. :D Whoever takes the time out of their day to read this, have a great day, and take care! :)

This music makes me feel so many emotions like I cant even describe it...My older sister introduced me to anime and I remember watching do many old and new anime with her..She is now in a different continent and its pretty costly and honestly a big hassle to go there so I wont be able to see her in person for the next 6-7 years at least. And this makes me sad because I miss her so much and also nostalgic because it brings back memories of when we would spend time together .We still call and zoom often but its not the same yknow. And I feel pretty weird rn coz idk what im feeling lol. But anyways thank you to this playlist for making me feel so many things and bringing up so many memories. Thank you

Lived in Japan in my early 20s and then worked for a Japanese company after college and went back many times. I'm 36 now, but I still love Japan and Japanese music. Before I went there I basically had only heard music from anime and video games (great music!), but living there opened me up to so much more music. I love Japan's pop scene from the 60s on. To this day some of the best pop comes out of Japan.
