When your job hinges on how well you talk to people, you learn a lot about how to have conversations -- and that most of us don't converse very well. Celeste Headlee has worked as a radio host for decades, and she knows the ingredients of a great conversation: Honesty, brevity, clarity and a healthy amount of listening. In this insightful talk, she shares 10 useful rules for having better conversations. "Go out, talk to people, listen to people," she says. "And, most importantly, be prepared to be amazed."

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. But summarizing what you think the other person is saying is a good way to make sure that you are understanding their point. A lot of arguments are just misunderstandings.

She hit the nail on the head. That was a great speech. The only thing I wish she would have included is to not interrupt people, or talk over them while they are talking.

find people that actually want to talk to you, I use to think I was bad at texting, I wasn't I was just trying to talk to the wrong people. If someone actually wants to talk to you the conversation flows effortlessly, if someone doesn't want to talk to you it feels like you're pulling teeth.

I am genuinely inspired! I sent it to myself in my phone so i can watch this everyday to try and teach myself 1-10! And i love how she points out what not to do. Because I remember specifically looking up on how to engage better in a conversation and came across the wiki website stating everything she said to forget. 😂 i know for a fact i am a talker and i cannot sit still or pay attention because of my ADHD so i read about this kind of stuff to really help myself instead of reaching out for help and numbing the pain with medication. I know I’ve grown as a better person and i cant wait to apply this lesson to my life. So happy i finally found something more realistic and relatable. I applaud this women!

1. Don't multitask. 2. Don't pontificate. 3. Use open ended questions. 4. Go with the flow. 5. If you don't know, say that you don't know. 6. Don't equate your experience with theirs. 7. Try not to repeat yourself. 8. Stay out of the weeds. 10. Be brief. .

All these tips are important only if you're not a politician and you're not discussing politics. The second category is religion. All this is useless to religious people trying to convert each other.... Politics and religion are out of this world.
